Carnevale!

by Elisa Agen

Club ItaloAmericano of Green Bay

celebrated Carnevale at Luigi’s Res-

taurant on Tuesday, March 5th.

Over 40 Club members and guests

attended this sold-out event, a year-

ly celebration held on the eve of Ash

Wednesday. Carnevale is tradition-

ally the last time to indulge before

the restrictions of Lent apply.

Attendees were greeted at the en-

trance by Board Member Victoria

Sobeck, who got us all in the spirit

of the evening by handing out col-

ored beads to wear!

The evening started with mingling

and socializing, all while listening to

the sweet sounds of Italian and Ital-

ian-American music. John Contratto

served as the MC for the event, and

he kept us all well-informed of what

delights awaited us as the evening

unfolded.

The most famous Carnevale cele-

bration is held in Venice, where a

centuries-old tradition includes the

wearing of elaborately-decorated

masks. Preble High School teacher

Karen Habel-Marshall and several

of her Italian studies students deco-

rated Venetian-style masks that

were mounted on the walls to lend

a festive air. The students also cre-

ated table centerpieces of colored

bottles, painted masks, flowers, and

feathers, all in Carnevale colors of

green, purple and gold. Members

and guests voted on their favorite

mask; Autumn’s was awarded first

place! The students who attended

included Autumn, Christian, Isaac,

Judith, Lily, Odalis, Owen, and Tay-

lor.

A feast for the eyes and taste buds

was served later in the evening.

Attendees were treated to pizza

with several different toppings, two

types of bruschetta, focaccia, salad,

chicken parmigiana, sausage and

peppers, mussels, two types of

meatballs, olives and cheeses and

penne with both marinara sauce

and oil and garlic. I dolci “the

sweets!“ were served later, and we

capped off the evening with a slice

of tiramisu and a cannoli.

After dinner we all played

“Tombola,” a traditional Italian

board game that resembles Bingo.

out the numbers. Of course, he read

them in Italian, so everyone had a chance

to practice a little! Many thanks to Janice

Galt who made the Tombola cards!

A warm and wonderful evening like this is

only possible due to the hard work of

many people. We are all grateful to Karen

Habel-Marshall and her students for

providing the masks and the centerpieces.

We thank Victoria Sobeck and Shirley

Maloney for organizing Carnevale, and

we thank John Contratto for being our

MC. The set-up and decorating were done

by Victoria and Darrell Sobeck, Shirley

Maloney, Riccardo and JoAnne Daley,

June McCotter, and Karen Habel-

Marshall, her daughter Katrina and her

boyfriend Caleb.

Additionally, let’s send a huge thanks to

our Board members, who work tirelessly

to ensure that our club can continue to

celebrate Italian culture and heritage.

Those present were L.V. Teofilo, Presi-

dent; Riccardo Daley, Vice President;

Janice Galt; Margene Marcantonio; and

Darrell Sobeck and Victoria Sobeck,

Treasurer.

And finally, we send a sincere thank you

the staff of Luigi’s who transported us

across the ocean with the flavors and food

of Italy.

What a wonderful festa di Carnevale!!

MEMBERSHIP

This month we welcome three new mem-

bers: Alicja Rozewski and Tony and Kathy

Yaggie. Although Alicja is not Italian, she

is a very enthusiastic young lady who is

fascinated with the Italian culture and has

a passion for learning languages. She

went to Italy as a young child and hopes to

return someday.

Originally from Iron Mountain, Michigan,

both of Tony and Kathy’s grandparents

came from northern Italy. Kathy’s grand-

father, Vincenzo Gregory arrived first and

sent for his future bride, Rachele To-

massoni. He worked in the open pit coal

mines. Tony’s grandparents, Antonio and

Angelina Constantini, owned a grocery

store on the north side but it closed dur-

ing the depression.

Benvenuti Alicja, Tony and Kathy!

Luncheons

The semi-regular luncheons of the “male

bonding group” of the GBCIA which was

managed by our long time vice president,

Patrick Kloster, is going to begin again on

a “come if you can” basis. As in the past,

we will from time to time pick a luncheon

location, and send out an e-mail with loca-

tion and time details, and you can just

decide if you would like to sit around and

chat with our other fellows. It is just a

nice time to catch up with our various

interests and share some time to, “bond”!

On Monday, March 11, a $1,500 check was given to Preble High school on behalf of the state WisItalia organization and Club

WisItalia in the name of and tribute to Peter Feira who was instrumental in promoting the inclusion of the Italian language in

the G.B. school system curriculum. Standing in for Al Roland, president of WisItalia, Nick Feira presented the check. In addi-

tion to Nick, Marlene and club president, Teofilo, Italian teacher Karen Habel/Marshall and vice president Dick Daley attend-

ed the meeting.
