Welcome to the International PhD School in Human Capital Development and Labour Relations

The three years spent as a PhD student in our doctoral program will mark a turn-ing point in your professional and academic career. The PhD School in Human Capital Formation and Labour Relations is set up by Adapt (Association for Comparative and International Studies in the field of La-bour Law and Industrial Relations) and CQIA (Academy for Teaching and Learn-ing Quality) in collaboration with the University of Bergamo. We establish part-nerships with prominent institutions and some of the most important Italy-based enterprises operating worldwide. Internships, planned tours of the companies, and conferences are provided, with the aim of opening a window on the working world, and to give your research a practical perspective, that is what companies in today’s labour market look for. Whether you want to carry out research in an international and interdisciplinary environment with an open door academic policy, supported by a mentor super-vising your work, or to take your first steps in the world of work in a well-known business, our PhD program offers you both. By combining individualized programmes and a multidisciplinary approach, our School aims at creating recognized professionals speaking a common language that connects both the field of education and labour relations. Be they HR man-agers, legal experts, or education consultants, our doctoral students will develop a set of skills enabling them to compete for a number of job positions in a flexi-ble way, to meet employment demand and face an ever-changing job market. You can benefit from our global network including worldwide institutions and universities, with the opportunity to attend international conferences, join our Summer School, and spend a research-period abroad. Be it a friendship or a working relationship, such networking might help you to build and develop your career further in the coming years. Our School has a reputation for connecting university and business. In this re-spect, our students are provided with the opportunity to carry out their research

as interns in the enterprise funding their scholarship over the three-year period. However, even those who opt for a more academic program can experience short-term internship as well. As a pathway to a bright future, we focus on mentoring, while encouraging inde-pendence. A tutor will supervise your research and offer advice. Foreign stu-dents can also rely on a senior student, who will help them during their stay in Italy. Furthermore, you will be asked to participate in public speaking, to join teaching and tutoring activities, to edit and write articles for our on-line publications and journals, and to help in setting up the annual PhD student symposium. We are committed to making your three-year experience successful. In order to create an outstanding team, we carefully select our candidates and provide them with necessary instruments to succeed. Imagine a career that takes you anywhere you want to go. Our International PhD program will help you taking the first steps. We are looking forward to your appli-cation, whatever your nationality or field of study is! WHY A PHD? Once graduated, you will find yourself having many opportunities. A PhD is the highest academic qualification you can earn. Our School is unique since it is not a ‘one-way street’. Not only does it give you the opportunity to focus on research and to develop expertise in a specific field of study, but it provides a stepping stone to the labour market. Our students and we are always in close contact with companies, public institutions, trade unions and employers’ organizations. Our doctoral candidates leave our School with a wealth of competence and skills, which will help them to find high-level jobs in the labour market.

FAQ – FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS I have a foreign degree. Is there any special procedure for the recognition of my degree in Italy? EU and foreign students holding a qualification that has not yet been declared equivalent to the required Italian Degree, must explicitly ask for recognition in their application (exclusively for the purpose of entering the Doctoral Course) in order to be admitted to selection, attaching the documents necessary for recog-nition of bona fide equivalence by the Course Coordinator; these must be trans-lated into Italian or English and legalized by the competent Italian Representa-tion under the regulations governing the admission of foreign students to de-gree courses in Italian universities. Does the University of Bergamo provide accommodation? According to available funding, single furnished rooms in shared apartments might be provided. Alternatively, it is up to the student, supported by senior stu-dents, to look for accommodation. Is there any assistance provided to obtain Visa and health insurance? As a European citizen, you can stay in Italy for three months without register. Af-ter three months you have to register at the Anagrafe (General Registry Office) of the town. For information about how to obtain visas, please contact the Em-bassy of your country in Italy. No health insurance is provided by the University of Bergamo or the PhD School. European citizens holding the European model E-106 or E-109 (please contact your compulsory health insurance!) can register with the Italian national health service. For further details, please talk to your health insurance.
