NEL PALAZZO DEL CAPITANO DEL POPOLOIN REGGIO EMILIA

Nel cuore dell’antica Reggio, a pochi passi dal Duomo Romanico, dal Palazzo del Comune nella cui Sala del Tricolore nel 1797 nacque la bandiera italiana, dai teatri, dai ne-gozi, ristoranti, uffici e banche, il medioevale Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo è da ottocen-to anni simbolo della città.

Located in the centre of the ancient heart of Reggio Emilia, close to the Romanesque style Cathedral, the Town Hall where the Italian Trico-lour Flag was born in 1797, theatres, restaurants, shops and banks, the medieval ‘Palazzo del Capi-tano del Popolo’ has been the most outstanding symbol of the town for over 800 years.

Il bar e tutta la hall sono arredati con eleganti mobili provenienti dall’antica Pa-sticceria Nazzani, storico luogo di fine otto-cento, ritrovo dell’aristocrazia intellettuale e imprenditoriale della città. I dipinti sono del Pittore Reggiano Cirillo Manicardi.

The furnishings in the lobby and bar are still the original, elegant ones from the Nazza-ni Confectionery which was the meeting place of many intellectual aristocrats at the end of the 19th Century. The paintings were made by the local renowned painter Cirillo Manicardi.

L’albergo vanta una tradizione di ospitalità di ben cinque secoli: già nel 1515 infatti il Palazzo divenne alloggio per Viaggiatori con il suggestivo nome di “Locanda del Cappello Rosso”.

La storia del “Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo” pro-cede di pari passo con la storia della città di Reggio Emilia, dai tempi dei Comuni fino ai giorni nostri.La reazione al dominio della Contessa Matilde di Ca-nossa, alla sua morte, fu la nascita di un forte partito popolare che, dopo anni di guerre sanguinose, si in-staurò in Reggio con la figura del Capitano del Popolo. Questi (per ospitare il quale fu costruito questo pa-lazzo) aveva l’incarico di governare la città, tutelar-ne la sicurezza, amministrarne la giustizia e tenere

le relazioni diplomatiche. Quando nel 1328 cessarono definitivamente le libertà comunali, la città cadde sotto il dominio dei Gonzaga, dei Visconti e infine degli Este.Nel Palazzo ebbe sede per qualche tempo il Massa-ro Ducale, poi la Zecca, quindi per ospitare degna-mente il nuovo Luogotenente della città, Marchese Sigismondo d’Este, venne eseguito un accurato re-stauro. Nei primi anni del 1500 poi il Palazzo fu di fatto abbandonato finchè nel 1515 venne affittato ai

fratelli Balburelli degli Scaruffi per farne una “bona et capace hostaria”. Da allora attraverso una lunga serie di contratti di affitto e passaggi di proprietà, la destinazione alberghiera non è mai mutata. Si sono però avvicendati nei secoli molti interventi architet-tonici che ne hanno modificato la struttura originale. Nel 1928 l’ultimo proprietario, Eugenio Terrachini, coadiuvato dal figlio Paolo, decide il restauro globa-le del fabbricato recuperandone l’architettura esterna originale e soprattutto riportando alla luce la grande

sala delle Adunanze, cuore della costruzione anti-ca e cuore della vita politica della Reggio Comunale.Oggi l’antica locanda è un elegante e accogliente quat-tro stelle in cui l’avvicendarsi delle destinazioni fun-zionali e degli interventi architettonici hanno impres-so il loro segno creando una piacevole e suggestiva miscellanea di stili. The history of the Palace (Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo) corresponds to the history of Reggio Emilia through the centuries. The reaction to the domination of the Countess Matilde di Canossa after her death, was the birth of a strong popular party that, after years of war and bloodshed, was established in town, guided by the ‘’People’s Captain’’ (Capitano del Po-polo). He was in charge of the administration of the town, its security and justice; the Palace was built to be his dwelling, as well as the centre of the diplomatic

life of the town’s Government.In 1328, when the freedom of the Municipality ended, the town fell under the domination of the Gonzaga, Vi-sconti and, finally, Este families.For some time, the Palace was the seat of the DucalSteward, then it became the local mint and, after that, in order to give a worthy welcome to the new Lieutenant, Marquis Sigismondo d’Este, huge and accurate renovation works were carried out.At the beginning of the 16th Century, the Palace was

vacated and, in 1515 it was leased out to the Balburelli degli Scaruffi brothers to make a ‘’good and capacious hostelry’’ of it. Since then, despite a long succession of leases and changes of property, it has always been a guest house.The original construction during the centuries that fol-lowed, went through various architectural alterations that changed its structure. In 1928 the latest owner, Eugenio Terrachini and his son Paolo, decided to car-ry out a global and thorough restoration to recover the

original external structure and, above all, bring the old Assembly Room back to its original splendour. Today, the ancient Hostel has become an elegant, comfortable 4-star Hotel where the long succession of restorations and functions have all left their marks creating a pleasant and suggestive blend of styles.
