L’ESPERTO: PAUL RÖSCH

Da un decennio Paul Rösch, cinquantotto anni, è il direttore del Museo provinciale per

il turismo, il Touriseum. Nato a Merano e dal 1994 anche presidente dell’agenzia di for-

mazione Urania Meran, è un ricercato interlocutore in ogni occasione di dibattito che

riguarda la sua città nativa. Persona dai molteplici interessi, ha partecipato attivamente

al recente sviluppo della città. Vanta una ricca produzione di pubblicazioni riguardanti

temi di natura storico-culturale e turistica. Una selezione è consultabile sul sito Inter-

net del Touriseum (www.touriseum.it). Anche per quanto concerne il tempo libero Paul

Rösch ha parecchie passioni, dall’escursionismo al ciclismo. Profondo conoscitore della

cucina sudtirolese, sull’argomento ha scritto un saggio dal titolo “I menù turistici in

Alto Adige, specchio dello sviluppo turistico”. In queste pagine Paul Rösch scatta un’i-

stantanea sulle diverse attrazioni della città di Merano e sulle sue virtù.

OUR EXPERT: PAUL RÖSCH

Paul Rösch, 58, has now for a decade been the Director of the Touriseum, the South Ty-

rol Museum of Tourism. Born in Merano, and since 1994 also head of the Urania Mera-

no academy, he is much in demand as a speaker in all discussions relating to his home

town. A man of many interests, he has actively participated in the recent development

of Merano. He has published numerous works on topics concerning history, culture and

tourism of which a selection can be found on the Touriseum website (www.touriseum.it).

Paul Rösch also enjoys a wide range of leisure activities, from hiking to cycling. He has a

thorough knowledge of South Tyrolean cuisine and has written an essay on this subject

entitled “How tourist menus in South Tyrol reflect developments in tourism”. In these

pages Paul Rösch gives a brief overview of the various attractions and benefits of Merano.

«Quando si parla di qualità della vita a Merano, il pensiero corre subito al suo clima.

Il motivo lo riassumo con un aneddoto personale, risalente a oltre un decennio fa. Mi

trovavo dove ora sorgono i Giardini di Castel Trauttmansdorff, prima che questi fos-

sero realizzati. Guardai a sud del castello e scorsi un limone in fiore. Era fine gennaio!

Questo episodio è l’immagine del clima mite e secco della città, adagiata in una conca

protetta dalle montagne, barriera che mitiga le temperature creando i presupposti per

il suggestivo incontro-confronto fra paesaggi alpini e tratti mediterranei».

«When we speak about the quality of life in Merano, our thoughts quickly turn to its

climate. I can tell you why with a personal anecdote that goes back over a decade. I was

where the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle now stand, before they were completed.

I looked out south of the castle and saw a lemon tree in full bloom. It was the end of

January! For me this episode sums up the mild and dry climate of Merano, which is

set in a valley bowl and protected by mountains, a barrier that moderates the tempera-

tures and creates the basis for the evocative meeting between Alpine landscapes and

Mediterranean features».

Inno al benessere In praise of well-being


Un ulteriore elemento che ha una stretta relazione con la città è l’acqua. Una delle

passeggiate più belle si affaccia sul fiume Passirio. Speciale cura viene inoltre dedicata

alle fontane storiche collegate da un percorso, la “Via delle fontane”.

Degli itinerari e delle stupende aree verdi parlo altrove in questa brochure (vedi pag. 8).

Mi preme solo rammentare che, per me, Merano è la città delle passeggiate. Cammi-

nando ci si può isolare dall’ansietà della vita moderna. In questo contesto assume forte

significato un evento come il Yoga Meeting “Merano in Yoga”, ogni anno a maggio».

«In the 19th century the healthy air contributed to Merano’s rise as a spa town. Various

writers also stayed here, among them Franz Kafka and Rainer Maria Rilke. When, in

1933, a geologist discovered a spring producing water rich in radon on the hill of San

Vigilio, the town’s metamorphosis into a thermal spa began. A symbol of this is the

Merano Thermal Baths located in the heart of Merano. Designed by celebrated archi-

tect Matteo Thun, the Terme Merano represents a synthesis of South Tyrol's traditional

heritage and modern mediterranean influences. Fifteen pools, a large sauna area and

an impressive summer park are just some of the attractions on offer. Most hotels too

have modern wellness areas in which to pamper their guests.

Another element closely connected to the town is water. One of the most beautiful walks

can be found along the River Passer, while special attention has also been paid to the hi-

storic fountains which are now linked by the “Via delle fontane” (Way of the Fountains).

I have already mentioned the itineraries and wonderful green areas elsewhere in this

brochure (see page 8). I would simply like to remark that, for me, Merano is a town of

walks. Walking allows us to free ourselves from the anxieties of modern life. In this

regard an event like the Yoga Meeting “Merano in Yoga”, held in May every year, takes

on a special significance».

«Nel XIX secolo l’aria salubre contribuì all’affermazione di Merano quale luogo di cura.

Qui soggiornarono anche diversi scrittori, da Franz Kafka a Rainer Maria Rilke. Quando,

nel 1933, un geologo scoprì su monte San Vigilio l’esistenza di acqua ricca di radon, co-

minciò la metamorfosi in località termale. Simbolo di questa svolta sono le Terme Me-

rano site nel cuore cittadino, oasi di benessere i cui attuali lineamenti rispecchiano lo

stile del celebre architetto Matteo Thun. Quindici piscine, un ampio reparto saune e un

grandioso parco estivo sono solo alcune delle attrazioni dell’impianto. Anche la mag-

gior parte degli hotel dispone di moderni spazi wellness che coccolano i propri ospiti.


A spasso nel verde Going green

«Merano è la città delle passeggiate. I suoi giardini curati e gli ampi parchi sono un

invito ad andare a spasso: la città offre tutta la tranquillità necessaria a dimenticare

la febbrile quotidianità. Lungo il fiume Passirio si cammina e indugia sulle terrazze

che degradano fino all’acqua. L’artistica cornice decorativa è opera eccellente delle

Giardinerie comunali».

«Merano is a town of walks. Its well-tended gardens and spacious parks invite

visitors to go for walks: the town offers all the peace and quiet you need to forget

the hectic rush of everyday life. You can walk along the River Passer and linger on

the terraces that run down to the water. This decorative framework is an artistic

production of the municipal gardens department».


«L’aspetto “meditativo” delle passeggiate trova riscontro nell’escursionismo. L’escur-

sionista ha un che del pellegrino. A lui consiglio l’Alta Via Meranese, circuito che ad-

dentrandosi nel Parco naturale del Tessa si completa in sei-sette giorni di camminata.

I “Waalweg” invece, fruibili tutto l’anno, sono ameni tracciati dei dintorni che corrono

lungo i canali irrigui. Undici di loro sono collegati nel percorso “Sentieri d’acqua” che

consente in otto tappe di scoprire tutta la conca meranese».

«The “meditative” aspect of these walks is also found in hiking. The hiker has some-

thing in common with the pilgrim: a recommended tour is the Merano High-Altitude-

Trail, a circuit that in part runs through the Texel Nature Park and can be completed

in six to seven days. On the other hand the “Waalwege” (ancient irrigation channels)

offer pleasant walks all year round on Merano’s outskirts. A total of eleven of these

channels are linked as the “Water Trails”, eight stages that allow visitors to explore

the entire Merano valley bowl».

«Quella verso Castel Trauttmansdorff era la gita fuori porta preferita dai meranesi. Una

volta la camminata si inoltrava fra i vigneti e, giunti alla meta, nel giardino del castello

si trovava una cantina dove i proprietari accoglievano gli ospiti servendo il vino. Oggi

questa tradizione non c’è più, ma i Giardini di Castel Trauttmansdorff, ottanta lussu-

reggianti paesaggi naturali, costituiscono un’attrazione unica e pluripremiata».

«The path to Trauttmansdorff Castle was a favourite out-of-town excursion of the Mer-

ano’s inhabitants. The path once ran between vineyards and, upon reaching their des-

tination, visitors would be welcomed by a winery in the castle gardens. This tradition

is no more, but the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle, eighty hectares of luxuriant

natural landscapes, constitute a unique attraction that has won numerous awards».

«Una passeggiata sulla celebre Tappeiner, ornata da una rigogliosa vegetazione me-

diterranea a mezza costa, regala un panorama straordinario sulla conca meranese. Il

suo sviluppo sostanzialmente pianeggiante, una volta raggiunta dal centro cittadino,

asseconda perfettamente i suggerimenti del professor Örtel, l’ideatore della cosiddetta

“Terrainkur” che consisteva nel “camminare lungo vie in lieve ascesa” con effetti bene-

fici sulla circolazione, sul cuore e sull’apparato respiratorio».

«A walk along the famous Tappeiner Way, with its luxuriant Mediterranean vegeta-

tion along the slopes, offers an extraordinary panorama over the Merano valley bowl.

Largely flat, it begins in the town centre and fits perfectly with the notions of Professor

Örtel and his so-called “terrain cure”, which consisted in “walking along gently rising

paths” with beneficial effects for the circulation, heart and respiratory system».

«Che sia per il suo meraviglioso territorio, per le sue architetture signorili o per i

suoi giardini curati, una cosa è certa: Merano è sinonimo di flair ed eleganza. La

sua mondanità si riflette anche sul piano sportivo. Le discipline equestri vantano

antiche radici. La più celebre appassionata di cavalli fu l’imperatrice Sissi che ne

possedeva ben ventisei nelle scuderie di Castel Pienzenau. Nel 1935 venne costruito

l’ippodromo di Merano nelle architetture con cui lo conosciamo oggi. Impianto

ippico fra i più belli d’Europa, si estende su quaranta ettari: è il polmone verde della

città. Qui si respira ancora esclusività e l’aria da jet-set si fa ancora più energica nel

giorno del Gran Premio Merano Forst, l’ultima domenica di settembre, quando i

migliori jockey e cavalli a ostacoli di mezzo continente si danno appuntamento per

giocarsi un primo premio che supera i 100 mila euro».

«Whether because of its wonderful location, stately architecture or well-tended gar-

dens, one thing is for sure: Merano is a byword for style and elegance. Its sophisticated

nature is also reflected in the field of sport. Equestrian disciplines have long had a

presence here: the most famous enthusiast was Empress Sissi of Austria, who kept

twenty-six horses in her stables at Pienzenau Castle. In 1935 Merano Race Course

was built in the form we know it today. One of Europe’s most beautiful race tracks, it

covers forty hectares and is one of the green lungs of the city. It still possesses an air

of exclusivity, even more so during the Merano Forst Grand Prix on the last Sunday

of September, when the best steeplechasers from across the continent - horses and

jockeys - compete for a first prize worth over 100,000 euros.

Not far from Merano can be found two golf courses: the 18-hole course in the Passeier

Valley and the 9-hole course on the Brandis estate near Lana. The Meranarena man-

ages various sports facilities in the city, including the lido and the indoor pool, the

tennis club with its thirteen outdoor and six indoor courts and the Rockarena climbing

centre. Above the town is the Merano 2000 hiking and ski area, ideal for families

and easy and quick to reach by cable car: in December and January this is also the

venue for the Salewa Basecamp, an ultra-modern tent village, where you can spend

the night at an altitude of 2,300 metres.

As a keen cyclist I particularly love the cycle path that runs 19 kilometres from Merano

through the green, almost flat countryside and into the Passeier Valley. The Vinschgau

Valley cycle route is also fascinating: you can take the train to Malles then pedal back

to Merano in comfort».

«Nei dintorni della città si trovano due campi da golf, uno da diciotto buche in Val

Passiria e l’altro da nove nella tenuta Brandis a Lana. Diversi impianti sportivi cittadini

vengono invece gestiti da Meranarena: il lido e la piscina coperta, il Tennis Club do-

tato di tredici campi esterni e sei indoor, la palestra di roccia Rockarena. Sopra la città

si apre il comprensorio sciistico ed escursionistico di Merano 2000, ideale anche

per le famiglie, raggiungibile in un batter d’occhio con una confortevole funivia: tra

queste cime fra dicembre e gennaio viene allestito il Salewa Basecamp, un villaggio di

modernissime tende dove poter trascorrere una notte a 2.300 metri di quota.

Da ciclista entusiasta amo particolarmente la ciclabile che da Merano solca la Val

Passiria per diciannove chilometri nel verde, pressoché pianeggianti. Anche la pista

della Venosta è affascinante: si può raggiungere Malles con il treno e pedale comoda-

mente fino a Merano».


«Merano ha due simboli: il Kurhaus e il duomo di San Nicolò. Il Kurhaus è un gio-

iello di architettura Jugendstil e il suo Kursaal è il più affascinante salone per feste

dell’Alto Adige. Il duomo, con il campanile che svetta sul centro, è intitolato al san-

to protettore dalle alluvioni, San Nicolò. Uno dei più significativi luoghi culturali è

invece il Teatro Puccini, inaugurato nel 1900».

«Merano has two symbols: the Kurhaus and the Cathedral of San Nicolò. The

Kurhaus is a gem of Art Nouveau architecture and its Kursaal the most fascinat-

ing venue for events in South Tyrol. The cathedral with its bell tower protruding

over the town centre is dedicated to Saint Nicholas, who protects the town against

flooding. The Puccini Theatre, opened in 1900, is one of Merano’s most significant

cultural locations».

«Un’altra manifestazione che si è positivamente sviluppata è il Mercatino di Natale,

un’atmosfera che si respira da fine novembre a inizio gennaio in centro città. La parte

di protagonista è recitata dai prodotti tipici dell’Alto Adige. Il Merano WineFestival

spalanca invece una finestra sul panorama vitivinicolo nazionale e mondiale. È ospitato

al Kurhaus, che è pure teatro fra fine agosto e settembre dei concerti delle Settimane

Musicali Meranesi, rassegna di spessore internazionale.

Quanto ai musei, li reputo tanto più “convincenti” quanta più curiosità riescono a ori-

ginare nei visitatori. Un museo deve far riflettere, ed è quanto trovo al Museo delle

Donne, fra i suoi vestiti e gli altri accessori che raccontano di mode e di ruoli femminili.

Al Castello Principesco immagino di vivere come l’imperatore Massimiliano I, nella

galleria Merano Arte scopro un perenne fervore creativo e al Touriseum mi immergo

nella divertente rappresentazione del fenomeno turismo altoatesino».

«Another success story is the Merano Christmas Market. The atmosphere in the town

centre is transformed from the end of November to the beginning of January, with the

main focus being on quality products from South Tyrol. The Merano WineFestival

opens up a panorama of wines and winegrowing from Italy and around the world. It is

held in the Kurhaus, which, between the end of August and September, also hosts the

Merano Music Weeks, offering concerts of international stature.

As regards the town’s museums, I rate their “success” by the degree of curiosity they

arouse in visitors. A museum must make people reflect, which is what I do when I visit

the Women’s Museum, with its garments and other accessories that recount the his-

tory of female fashion and roles. At the Princes’ Castle I can imagine life in the times

of the Emperor Maximilian I, while the Merano Arte gallery has a permanent atmos-

phere of creative fervour. At the Touriseum finally I can experience an amusing and

enjoyable tour of the phenomenon of tourism in South Tyrol».

«Merano si è sempre mostrata aperta nei confronti di nuove idee e tendenze:

l’accentuata liberalità ne è un tratto distintivo. Con intraprendenza sono stati allestiti

eventi il cui eco ha travalicato i confini locali. La Festa dell’Uva, che dal 1886 anima il

terzo fine settimana di ottobre, è una vetrina di tradizioni, un’unione riuscita fra musi-

ca, cultura, attaccamento alle proprie radici e buona cucina».

«Merano has always been open to new ideas and trends, as evidenced by its dis-

tinctively liberal attitudes. Its resourceful staging of events reverberates far beyond

the surrounding areas. The Grape Festival, held since 1886 on the third weekend of

October, is a showcase of traditions, a successful blend of music, culture, local roots

and high-quality cuisine».


«Faccio una premessa: sono un grande fan della cucina altoatesina. Rimango sem-

pre stupito dell’armonia con cui a Merano i sapori tirolesi si accordano con la cucina

italiana. Solo negli anni Sessanta i sudtirolesi cominciarono ad assorbire gli influssi

provenienti da sud e a cucinare con meno grassi: oggi questo matrimonio gastrono-

mico è un tratto caratteristico della città».

«I will admit it: I am a great fan of South Tyrolean cuisine. I am always astonished

at the way in which Tyrolean tastes come together in harmony with Italian cuisine in

Merano. Only in the 1960s did cooking in South Tyrol begin to absorb influences from

the south and start to use less fat: this culinary marriage is today one of the town’s

most distinguishing features».

Le nozze fra sapori ed eleganza A marriage of elegance and taste

«Vino, cultura e tradizione nel nostro territorio sono strettamente correlati. Il cli-

ma soleggiato del Meranese crea le condizioni ideali per buoni vini con personalità

inconfondibili. L’autunno porta con sé il profumo delle caldarroste: il “Törggelen”,

originariamente un pasto al termine della vendemmia, si è trasformato in un rituale

celebrato da locali e ospiti nel quale con il vino nuovo vengono servite specialità

stagionali.

Quando sono in vacanza, mi piace calarmi nell’atmosfera autentica del luogo. Mera-

no si specchia nell’eleganza del suo insieme architettonico e dei suoi lineamenti

che si sublimano in particolare nei tratti Jugendstil del Kurhaus e del Teatro Puccini,

mentre la città vecchia rievoca la magia della vecchia capitale del Tirolo. Nel quartie-

re di Maia Alta si alternano ville signorili, vicoli nascosti e aristocratiche residenze

dai parchi sorprendenti. I pittoreschi Portici rappresentano la principale via dello

shopping: già nel Medioevo erano il fulcro del commercio. Molti negozi sono stati

ristrutturati rispettando la sintonia architettonica; lo stesso vale per vari ristoranti e

per le rispettive cantine.

Il grande mercato del venerdì può vantare una lunga tradizione e mescola residenti

e turisti. Altrettanto interessante è il mercato contadino che si tiene ogni sabato

mattina in via Galilei».

«Wine, culture and tradition are all closely related here. The sunny climate of the

Merano area produces the ideal conditions for good wines with unmistakable per-

sonality. Autumn brings with it the scent of roast chestnuts: “Törggelen”, originally a

feast held at the end of the grape harvest, has become a ritual celebrated in numerous

establishments where seasonal specialties are served up with new wine.

When I am on holiday I enjoy absorbing the authentic atmosphere of Merano. This

aspect of the town is reflected in the elegance of its architecture, in particular the

Art Nouveau features of the Kurhaus and the Puccini Theatre, while the old town re-

calls the magic of the former capital of Tyrol. In the Maia Alta quarter can be found

stately villas, hidden alleyways and aristocratic residences with amazing parks. The

picturesque Portici Arcade lines the main shopping street and has been the centre of

commerce here since the Middle Ages. Many shops have been renovated while pre-

serving the overall harmony of the architecture and the same can be said for numer-

ous restaurants and wineries.

The Friday market boasts a long tradition and is popular with locals and tourists alike.

Just as interesting is the farmers’ market held every Saturday morning in Galilei Street».

I fiori seducono, illudono e lavorano in squadra insieme alla fauna. Con un’inaspettata raffinatezza la pianta utilizza i suoi colori, i suoi profumi e le sue forme per conservare la propria specie. Le piante giocano un ruolo importante anche nella vita sentimentale degli esseri umani. Per ogni desiderio sembra essere cresciuta un’erba apposita. Ma cosa è vero, e cosa solamente un falso mito? Non solo le sale della mostra ma anche il variegato programma di contorno vi indurranno a sorridere!SeX and FloWerS - a botaniCal love StoryCheeky and playful, mysterious and mystical: the 2014 special ex-hibition at the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle explains how plants “do it” and what our expectations of them are. 08.03-02.05.2014vite in itinereStorie di donne in viaGGio verSo meranoAl centro di questo progetto ci sono le donne migranti di diversa provenienza, nazionalità, cultura e religione che vivono a Merano. La documentazione raccolta vuole essere una testimonianza attuale, autentica ma anche orientata al futuro, della vita e della quotidia-nità di queste donne a Merano. Paola Marcello ha intervistato e fotografato donne originarie di tutti i continenti. Vengono incorag-giati l’apertura, l’incontro, l’accettazione e lo scambio tra donne con origini migratorie e donne locali. Nuovi ritratti femminili vengono realizzati sulla base dell’elaborazione delle storie personali, da cui emergono anche paralleli e comunanze tra donne di culture diffe-renti. Tutto questo origina momenti di scambio, di avvicinamento e confronto. 31.01-18.05.2014moStra FotoGraFiCa “CirCuS Calder”Il grande fotografo Ugo Mulas (Brescia 1928-Milano 1974) conobbe l’artista americano Alexander Calder nel 1962 a Spoleto. Dalla loro grande amicizia hanno origine 80 fotografie, la cui metà ispirate al progetto “Circus” di Calder.Attraverso il linguaggio fotografico egli fornisce una chiave d’in-terpretazione dell’opera di uno degli scultori più importanti del XX secolo e alimenta allo stesso tempo un circuito che dall’arte parte e all’arte ritorna.pHoto eXHibition “CirQue Calder” Photographer Ugo Mulas, who died in 1974, got to know the American artist Alexander Calder in Spoleto in 1962. This ac-quaintance produced 80 photo works, half of them on Calder’s
