Union Nationale des Associations Regionales études ET chantiers

(National Union of regional associations études ET chantiers)

études ET chantiers was created in 1962 by several Youth movements and follows the idea of non-violence and

humanism as well as international co-operation and exchanges in the “Education Populaire” movement – a

French concept meaning non formal education. We are engaged in the world-wide movement of international

voluntary services (short term and long term) through partnerships with 120 organisations in more than 70

countries.

Our “Union” is composed by 5 regional associations, with a national office in Paris and an international

placement office in Clermont-Ferrand:

ecIDF : études ET chantiers Ile de France – Paris area and North of France

ecGE: études ET chantiers Grand Est – East part of France

ecMP : etudes ET chantiers Midi Pyrenées – South West part of France

ecEC: études ET chantiers Espace Central – Centre and South East of France

ecC : études ET chantiers Corsica – Corsica island in the Mediterranean sea

Each of the regional organisations run permanent project independently from each other, but they work together

on the workcamp programme which is co-ordinated at the National and International level by the International

Delegation in Clermont-Ferrand.

We organise 30 to 40 international camps every year (and through out the year) – some of them are for younger

volunteers (14-17 years old), and others are for +18 volunteers, with no upper age limit. All our adult projects are

open to senior volunteers.

Another large part of our activities is to develop activities with adults facing social or economical difficulties. Our

regional organisations manage 50 local inclusion work projects with young or adults facing exclusion. This is the

larger part of our action that involves us in employment or social public schemes and in European programmes.

Usually we host 12 volunteers on each of our workcamps (9/10 international volunteers +2/3 French

participants) but some projects are open to 8 volunteers only.

On our adult projects you work about 30 hours per week; most of the time you don’t work on week-ends, but it

might happen for different reasons.

In our workcamps, all activities are decided together with the volunteers and the camp leaders. You will live an

experience in a group and things are planned within the group.

The languages spoken on our workcamps are English and French, except on specific international French

speaking camps (indicated in the description).

Every day life: the group will organise teams so that everybody can participate in the cleaning, tidying up, and

preparation of the meals… do not forget your recipes!

Activities: on your arrival, leaders will propose several activities; but your ideas are welcomed and everything can

be discussed. So be imaginative, the workcamp is a place for having fun! We don’t expect you to do activities on

your own, going to visit friends living nearby or going alone to watch a movie!

Leading team:camp leaders are not there to manage everything; they advise volunteers, suggest various

activities; they are also a link between the different actors of the workcamp: the organising association, the

project sponsor, the local population and the volunteers. Our camp leaders are usually staff paid, but we also host

volunteer co-leaders

Age Limit: 18 years old minimum –no maximum;

We accept 17 year old participants if they already have had a volunteer experience and if they are mature

enough to join an adult project (a motivation letter is necessary for minor volunteers)

On each project we open 1 or 2 places for people facing social or psychological difficulties (like living in

orphanages or in specialized institutions). Be aware that these volunteers are expected a lot from a workcamp

experience; it is for them a big adventure and good contacts with International volunteers are really important for

them.

Insurance: our association covers the volunteers from the first to the last day of the project (civil liability, personal

accident, assistance repatriation). Our insurance does not cover lost or stolen objects, or illness (except those

due to accidents).

Volunteers from the E.U countries MUST bring a European Health card to cover their cost (replacing the E111

form) (medical, pharmaceutical and hospitalisation cover).

No advance of money will be given to them.

Our adults camps have no extra fees

SOLIDARITÉS JEUNESSES

Solidarités Jeunesses (SJ) is an association of a movement for informal education which values voluntary commitment, strong political will, and social solidarity as its core principles. Our course of actions is influenced by our ideal vision of a society in which progress is social, respect for human beings and the environment is a fundamental and shared value, and the freedom to choose, to dream, and to resist is innate and encouraged by all. Our activities are organised for all, regardless of gender, social and cultural background, or nationality. Since its creation, SJ participates in the construction and maintenance of peace by promoting intercultural and international social connections here in France and abroad. SJ works through participative pedagogy which supports initiative and personal commitment and combines the skills and intelligences of all our volunteers and employees. Solidarités Jeunesses is composed of one National Secretary based in Paris, seven Regional Delegations, and one partner association. Our delegations host volunteers from France and from all around the world for short or long periods of time all year round. Furthermore, those delegations and partners host and provide assistance to young people with fewer opportunities, as part of our efforts for inclusion and solidarity. All of our delegations and partners are situated in unique environments, such as castles, former camp-sites, isolated villages in the heart of mountains, and former factories. These places have all been renovated thanks to the work of our short- and long-term volunteers, workers and permanent staff. SJ has been working in partnership within national and international networks (Cotravaux, CNAJEP, CCIVS, NVDA and the Alliance) for decades.

Project: In the heart of the Hautes Alpes, the association “Les Villages des Jeunes”

(www.villagesdesjeunes.org) has been managing, livening up and renovating the reception centre of le Faï

since 1990. It is a former agriculture domain situated at an altitude of 1000 meters. The old buildings of the farm have been developed into small apartments and group accommodations. At le Faï, from April to December, the association organises inclusion projects for local people who are faced with social and professional difficulties and host teenagers and young adults experiencing family, health or professional difficulties in order to give them a possibility to get professional experience. In the summer, the Faï is also a place where professional artists and musicians come to work in and with this extraordinary place. Together, they create and perform at the yearly festivals that take place at the Faï. The international workcamps organised at the Faï contribute to make this place something “extra”, where people in different ages, from different countries and cultures, employees and volunteers, artists and tourists, live and work together for some days or several months.

We hope that you also, a volunteer from France or abroad, will come in this spirit of encounter and working together which brings our project to life.

Work: Most of the buildings at the Faï have been developed and made to host groups during short periods. As a consequence, only one building is left for the permanent staff and the seasonal workers who live on site. With the development of our activities, the team has grown and it is highly prioritised to offer them a good place to stay.

This project will take place during two years and the first step is to clear and tidy a building situated 50 meters from the hosting centre. The building is called the “Eco museum”, because of the old agriculture machines that are there. During the second period, the roof will be insulated in order to create a new apartment in the building. This work will give you the opportunity to learn more about different insulation techniques, from the most traditional to the most ecological ones!

5

Leisure: As the Faï is surrounded by an extraordinary nature, it is an ideal place when it comes to discover mountain hiking and the rural villages with their peasant markets and local products. In the evenings you can organise games, film nights, international meals… You can also organise more “touristic” trips to the towns and villages of the region.

Lodging: In rooms with 5-6 persons

Location: The Farm of the Faï (3km from the village of Saix, 30 km from the city of Gap)

Closest train station: Veynes Dévoluy (18km)

Some activities will also be proposed by the youth department of the city council. Most of all, it is hoped that with the help of your camp leaders, you, the volunteers, will propose and carry out your own suggestions for activities according to the available budget and opportunities.

CONCORDIA

Concordia is a French national non-governmental and non-profit making organisation, founded in 1950 by English, German and French youngsters. Their aim was to enhance the values of tolerance and peace after the 2nd world war by organising international workcamps of young volunteers. The main objectives of Concordia are the following: Education i-e helping young people to grow up by acquisition of collective life.

6

Culture i-e favouring the youth exchanges on an international level, always emphasizing the values of peace, friendship and mutual respect. Social i-e taking part in concrete actions of solidarity, as well as supporting a civic attitude Social economy i-e contributing to realisation of local development, in favour of the environment, patrimony, tourism and socio-educational animation. Workcamps are a perfect tool to reach these goals: Participating in a workcamp means working voluntarily during three weeks at a project of a common utility, such as environment, archaeology, culture, patrimony. It is a form of informal education, but also an opportunity to discover a new region and its inhabitants. The participants get to know the real life of a small community, as well as the culture and customs of other volunteers, who come from all around the world. Every year Concordia gives the opportunity to more than 1000 French youths to get involved in its partner projects abroad and hosts around 1200 foreign volunteers on its own workcamps in France. Concordia is a member of three major international networks and one national which support voluntary service: - The Alliance of European Voluntary Service Organisations which is a network of 30 national organisations in 20 countries and the Co-ordinating Committee for International Voluntary Service (CCIVS) which is an organisation founded under the aegis of UNESCO in 1948 and coordinates about 300 organisations worldwide. - The National Association COTRAVAUX (Co-ordination of French Voluntary Work organisations).

- The Association of Voluntary Service Association (AVSO) a European network with the goal of improving European voluntary service. The other activities of the association continue throughout the year with weekend or short holiday workcamps, mid and long term voluntary service, integration of people with difficulties, study and activity groups (North-South, International), sending and hosting volunteers of European Voluntary Service. Concordia also organises various trainings throughout the year. Those who wish to be even more involved in Concordia’s activities can be elected at the management committee; Concordia is a democratic organisation, led by dynamic and motivated volunteers as well as young people, and supported by paid staff. Today the management committee counts 15 members, there are 1800 subscribers, 25 employees and 200 activity leaders. The Paris head office supports the eight regional offices activities i-e the Alps, Auvergne, Aquitaine, Normandy, Picardy, South-Southwest, Ile-de-France and Britanny. Concordia has the approval of the French Ministry of Youth and Sport and the Ministry of the Environment.
