he churches of Erice conserve precious works of art inside them among which stand outsculptures of the Gagini school: in the Mother Church, a fifteenth century Madonna with childattributed to Domenico Gagini and a large marble sixteenth century bas-relief by GiulianoMancino are kept. Inside the church of San Giovanni Battista (Saint John the Baptist) one canadmire sculptures of San Giovanni Evangelista- Saint John the Evangelist by Antonino Gaginiand of San Giovanni Battista - Saint John the Baptist, a work by Antonello Gagini.

n the A.Cordici Civic Museum, there are Punic, Greek and Roman archaeological finds; paintingsand sacred paraments from the XVII and XVIII centuries. Of great importance are the testa diAfrodite - head of Aphrodite from the IV century B.C., symbol of the town, and the Annunciazione- Annunciation by Antonello Gagini (1525). All year round, the Ettore Majorana Centre holdsconventions, meetings and debates of such interest as to have procured the town the title Cityof Science. Finally, in the San Matteo locality is the Museo Agroforestale and an interesting centrerun by the Azienda Foreste which looks after the last specimens of Pantellerian donkeys.

oving upwards from the sea towards the summit of the mountain, three types of climateare crossed: a marine climate, a hilly and Apennine climate passing from the halophytevegetation at the sea to carobs and oaks and finally, further up the mountain, ash and downyoaks are to be found. The most representative endemic species are the Brassica drepanensisand Limonium ponzoi.

here are heartfelt celebrations for the Madonna of Custonaci during the last week of August:altars in honour of the Virgin are set up in the courtyards of the houses and on the last Wednesdayof the month, the votive painting is carried in a procession. On Good Friday the Misteri, four groupsof statues made from wood, cloth and glue (XVIII century) depicting episodes from the passionof Christ, are carried in a procession with a particularly suggestive atmosphere through the town,followed by Jesus in the tomb and the wooden statue of the Addolorata - Our Lady of Sorrows(XVI century).

While the whole mountainis perfect for excursions and walks, the waters in front of the windy San Giuliano beach, at thefoot of the mountain are suited to the practice of sailing activities and it is not difficult to findsailing boats and kite surfers training.

t is impossible to summarize the treasures kept in Erice; just around the Balio Gardens we canfind the Castle, the Towers and the Torretta Pepoli - Pepoli Turret, while among the numerousstreets of the town are noble palaces and churches among which are worth mentioning SanMartino, San Giovanni and the fourteenth century Mother Church, next to which rises the imposingbell tower which was originally an Aragonese watchtower.

However, it is the pastries and confectionary which make the town an undisputed mustas regards the food and wine: the pastries made from almonds are typical (the bocconcini thebelli e brutti, the chocolate palline). The genovesi (with a particularly soft short crust pastry filledwith confectioner's cream) and the mustaccioli (dry, particularly hard biscuits which accompanyliqueurs and dessert wines).
