IL CRITERIO TEOLOGICO
FONDAMENTALE DELLA SVOLTA
ECUMENICA: RISCOPRIRE INSIEME LA
CHIESA COME MISTERO
(nell'unico battesimo e nell'unica Parola di Dio)
THE STARTING THEOLOGICAL CRITERIUM FOR THE ECUMENICAL INTENT: REDISCOVERING
TOGETHER THE CHURCH AS GODS MYSTERY
INTRODUZIONE RISITUARE LAPPROCCIO ECCLESIOLOGICO
Dopo aver considerato alcuni presupposti, o premesse dellintento ecumenico, occorre
kumenischen Bewegung teilnehmen knnen. In seiner rmischen Pressekonferenz vom 11.

to make sense of the ecumenical movement do not realize is that the ecumenistsmuch like today's politiciansspeak out of both sides of
their mouths. The ecclesiological language of the ecumenical movement is highly contradictory: often what is given out with one hand is
taken back two- or even ten-fold with the other. In this way they are frequently able to convince those who are not well-grounded in the
Orthodox faith or who have only superficially studied the ecumenical movement that their words and deeds are not a violation of Holy
Traditionespecially when Tradition as they understand it includes such wholly un-Orthodox pronouncements as the infamous Patriarchal
Encyclical of 1920, by which the Church of Constantinople entered the ecumenical movement.

(screen page 1): Eastern Orthodox churches generally do not begin theological reflection with the doctrine of the church. Georges
Florovskys comment below is representative: On the Orthodox side, it has been claimed more than once that no strict or formal definition
of the Church is possible and that no such definition is needed. Indeed, the Fathers of the ancient church did not care for formulas simply
because they had an existential knowledge of the Church, an intuition or vision of her mysterious reality. One does not define what is self-
evident 1.

studio sulle prospettive ecumeniche dellecclesiologia stessa 3.
sapore semplicisticamente e vagamente 'cristiana' 7.

In termini strettamente ecclesiologici,

In tal caso saprebbero
all'intento ecumenico 9.
Dalliniziale

(screen page 2): In 1991 at the WCCs Assembly in Canberra, Australia, the council initiated a study process towards an articulation of
ecumenical ecclesiology. 1 As the Canberra Assembly noted, there is a growing need to study the ecclesiological assumptions that the
churches bring to the dialogues in which they participate. Can such a study lead to the development of an ecumenical ecclesio logy, that is,
an ecclesiology that points the way towards unity, and that the churches recognise as being consonant with their own faith experience? The
primary theme for this study is koinonia, or communion. The study of the church as communion has found its way into all of the major
bilateral dialogues, and has led to a surprising level of convergence, consensus and common agreement. 2 The concept of church as
communion, though not unknown in western theology, is found with particular clarity in Orthodox theology and ecclesiastical discipline. It is
perhaps too easy to give sole credit to Orthodox participants for contributing this theme to current ecumenical discourse.

we share in this unity in the Church of Jesus Christ, who is before all things and in whom all things hold together. In him alone, given by the
Father to be Head of the Body, the Church has its true unity; p. 117: 4. The foregoing paragraph must be understood as a brief description
of the sort of unity which would correspond to God's gift and our task. It is not intended as a definition of the Church and it does not
presuppose any one particular doctrine of the Church. It is upon a statement worked out by the Commission on Faith and Order, accepted by
the Central Committee at St Andrews in 1960 and sent to the member churches for consideration and comment. The Toronto Statement
was a landmark in the World Councils about itself and its relation to work for unity.

III. Trinitarian ecclesiology. Both the polemical and the more recent irenical dialogues between 1 rthodox and Catholic churches have
highlighted a major distinction in our conception of the Trinity. The stereotypical approach of the western churches is to affirm the perfect
oneness of God (monotheism), and then to proceed to explain the persons of the Trinity in light of the principle of unity (unicity). This
contrasts with the eastern approach, which affirms the divine equality of the three persons before proceeding to affirm the unity expressed
in their mutual relations (koinonia). John Zizioulas cautions that ecclesiology is not a sociological study. e e alludes to a frequent eastern
criticism of western theology: If we believe in a God who is primarily an individual who first is and then relates, we are not far from a
sociological understanding of koinonia; the church in this case is not in its being communion, but only secondarily, i.e. for the sake of its
bene esse 1. Perhaps this distinction would not seem terribly significant were it not for its implications for further theological reflections.
Both Orthodox and Catholics stress the church as the image of the Trinity, and thus the diverging understandings of the Trinity result in
diverging ecclesiologies.

article7106.asp: The Meaning of the Word "Mystery". Each mystery is directly rooted in Christ. Christ himself is the primordial mystery (John
1:1-18), and the very celebrant of all the mysteries. The Orthodox Church uses the Greek word mysterion, instead of sacrament, to denote
the divinely instituted rites which manifest and communicate sanctifying divine grace. The word mysterion essentially means anything hidden
or incomprehensible. It has been applied by the Church to the essential beliefs and doctrines of the faith and appears several times in Holy
Scripture; its chief meaning is linked to the hidden and secret will of God related to the salvation of the world, now manifest in Jesus Christ,
the Incarnate Word (Logos). "And since the Church is to proclaim that mystery and communicate it to the people, the essential acts by which
she is accomplishing this are also called mysteries. Through all these acts we are made participants and beneficiaries of the great mystery of
salvation accomplished by Jesus Christ" (Rev. Al. Schmemann).

himself one with humanity-"God becoming human"-in order to make humanity one with God-"that humanity might become God." Humanity
"becomes God" in being made to live in God-"It is no longer I who live but Christ who lives in me"-and in union with the Christ, is granted to
partake of the divine nature, that is, of all the properties, the riches, of divinity, and in particular Christ himself. As the mystery of union with
God, theosis sets forth the evangelical experience of salvation in Christ as a nuptial mystery in which the two, God and humanity, become
one as bridegroom and bride. The nuptial character of theosis introduces us to its properly native environment, that of the mysteries or the
sacraments of the church; and it reveals the sacraments or the mysteries of Christ to be an embodiment of the mystery of theosis and a
transfiguration, a deification, of the archetypal symbol of the ancient hieros gamos (sacred marriage). THEOSIS AND THE MYSTERIES OF THE
CHURCH. The church herself is the bride of Christ (see Eph 5:32) and she is one with him as his body (Eph 5:30). She is the "New Jerusalem,
who comes down from out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband" (Rev 21:2), an image in which the church
appears as the pre-existent consort of Christ-and so she is introduced by Origen: You are not to think that it is only since the coming of
Christ in the flesh that she has been called Bride or Church, but from the beginning of the human race and the very foundation of the world,
or rather, to follow Paul's lead in seeking the origin of the mystery even earlier, even `before the foundation of the world' (Eph 1:4).14.

historical level. It is rather a permanent hint to what is "to come" hereafter. The antinomy is rooted in the practical alternative which the
Church had to face from the very beginning of its historical pilgrimage. Either the Church was to be constituted as an exclusive and
"totalitarian" society, endeavouring to satisfy all requirements of the believers, both "temporal" and "spiritual," paying no attention to the
existing order and leaving nothing to the external world it would have been an entire separation from the world, an ultimate flight out of
it, and a radical denial of any external authority. Or the Church could attempt an inclusive Christianization of the world, subduing the whole
of life to Christian rule and authority, to reform and to reorganize secular life on Christian principles, to build the Christian City. In the
history of the Church we can trace both solutions: a flight to the desert and a construction of the Christian Empire. The first was practiced

catholicity we must start from the center of all i.e., Holy Trinity. The Holy Trinity is the ideal and crown of catholicity. It is the light of the
doctrine of the Trinity that catholicity becomes a uniquely meaningful quality. The first eight articles of the Creed speak about the Holy
Trinity and the ninth article speaks about the Church, since the Church is an image, an icon of the Holy Trinity on the earth. The Church is
the earthly aspect of the Holy Trinity. Therefore everything in Church is Trinitarian, holy and catholic, as we profess to believe in One, Holy,

most wonderful attribute, which reflects the life and the mystery of the Trinitarian antinomy.

multitude of human persons are united in one, yet each preserves his personal diversity unimpaired. The mutual indwelling of the persons of
the Trinity is paralleled by the coinherence of the members of the Church. In the Church there is no conflict between freedom and authority;
in the Church there is unity, but no totalitarianism. When Orthodox apply the word Catholic to the Church, they have in mind (among other
things) this living miracle of the unity of many persons in one. This conception of the Church as an icon of the Trinity has many further
applications. Unity in diversity just as each person of the Trinity is autonomous, so the Church is made up of a number of independent
Autocephalous Churches; and just as in the Trinity the three persons are equal, so in the Church no one bishop can claim to wield an
absolute power over all the rest. This idea of the Church as an icon of the Trinity also helps to understand the Orthodox emphasis upon
Councils. A council is an expression of the Trinitarian nature of the Church. The mystery of unity in diversity according to the image of the
Trinity can be seen in action, as the many bishops assembled council freely reach a common mind under the guidance of Spirit. 1 L. Newbigin, La Chiesa missionaria nel mondo moderno, Roma 1968, p. 10.

(screen pages 17/18): There is a further distinction to note in the way in which east and west approach the Trinity. In the western churches,
there is a tendency to avoid the pneumatological implications of various theological affirmations. The reason for this is a strong
Christological priority in the west. From an eastern perspective, a balance must be found. As we have seen, the eucharistic notion of the
church carries an obvious Christological flavour. However, eucharistic theology carries pneumatological and eschatological flavours as well,
particularly in the eastern articulation. Zizioulas insists that the Pneumatology implied by the filioque manifests itself directly in an
ecclesiological filioquism. 1 By prioritising the Christological over the pneumatological, western theology breaks down the fundamental
equality between the Son and the Spirit. The Son becomes, with the Father, the source of the Spirits procession, and thus superior to the
Spirit. If Pneumatology is not ontologically constitutive of Christology, this can mean that there is first one Church and then many churches.
2 The Christological ecclesiology of the west emphasises the priority of one church, Rome, over other churches elsewhere. The Church of
Rome becomes the very principle of ecclesial unity, just as -by the filioque- Christ becomes the principle of trinitarian unity. This tendency is
at the root of the Orthodox objections to the current practice of papal primacy.

movement by the Orthodox churches, is of eminent significance. Theologians like Gregory Nazanzius have linked the Trinitarian sociality of
God with the sociality of the cosmos and of the human being. The reality of this sociality is celebrated first of all in the Eucharistic
communion - not just as a ritual but with all our commitments to Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation which, in recent times, has been
called liturgy after the liturgy. Sharing around the Eucharistic table - followed by sharing in the human community in order to create an all-
embracing sharing community - is a visible sign and foretaste of the Kingdom of God. Representing this new reality in creation is the key
mission of the Church as she participates in Gods mission for life in fullness. Another Patristic theologian, Irenaeus of Lyon, expressed this
in one sentence, often quoted by the late Archbishop Oscar Romero: Gloria Dei, homo vivens - The glory of God is that humans may live. 6 G. Khodr, L'Esprit Saint dans la tradition orientale, in AA. VV., Credo in Spiritum Sanctum, Citt del Vaticano 1983, vol. I, p. 383: La

Bishop Kallistos (Ware), a prominent English Orthodox theologian, well acquainted with Western theology, writes: "Latin Scholastic theology,
emphasizing as it does the essence at the expense of the persons, comes near to turning God into an abstract idea. He becomes a remote
and impersonal being, whose existence has to be proved by metaphysical arguments a God of the philosophers, not the God of Abraham,
Isaac, and Jacob. Orthodoxy, on the other hand, has been far less concerned than the Latin west to find philosophical proofs of God's
existence: what is important is not that a man should argue about the deity, but that he should have a direct and living encounter with a
concrete and personal God. "Such are some of the reasons why Orthodox regard filioque as dangerous and heretical. Filioquism confuses the
persons, and destroys the proper balance between unity and diversity in the Godhead. The oneness of the deity is emphasized at the
expense of His threeness; God is regarded too much in terms of abstract essence and too little in terms of concrete personality" (The
Orthodox Church, page 222).

capovolto dell'esperienza 2.

(screen page 15): A widely reported quote of Patriarch Athenagoras holds that the Church is not the kingdom of God; it is the sacrament of
the kingdom. 1 By this, we should understand that the church is not the end in itself, not the purpose for its own existence. Rather the
church serves to point the way and to provide support in the journey to Gods kingdom. The eucharist as well serves to strengthen the
faithful pilgrim on the journey to Gods kingdom.

http://betweenthetimes.com/2010/03/03/what-is-the-missional-gospel-part-3-the-ecumenical-missional-church/: This view of the
gospel and the kingdom of God emphasizes that Jesus entered human history with power to reign, and he reestablished kingdom life on the
basis of redemptive power by way of a cross and the resurrection. Jesus introduces a new reality into human history, which is both a gospel
reality and kingdom reality. The kingdom is the reigning presence of God, and the gospel is the means by which the reigning presence of
God was established and continues to reign. They depend upon Peter Stuhlmachers explanation of how the cross establishes the reign of
God, who says: Jesus decides to do the utmost he is capable of doing on earth: to offer himself to spare his friends and foes from the
judgment of death. By means of his death Jesus does not appease a vengeful deity; rather, on his way of the cross he is the embodiment of
the love of God, as sketched in Isaiah 43:3-4, 25. This love wants to spare the impenitent daughters and sons of Israel, as well as his feeble
disciples, from having to perish because of their doubts about his mission and the consequences of their reserve toward Jesus message.
(Quoted in Guder, The Continuing Conversion of the Church, 43; See Stuhlmacher, Jesus of Nazareth Christ of Faith, 52).
5 J. Sobrino, Christology at the Crossroads, New York 1978, p. 208: Paradoxically enough, it is this teaching of God's kingdom as grace that
proves to be the major obstacle for accepting Jesus. Jesus unmasks the effort of 'religious' people to ensure them selves against God. If God's
approach is an act of grace, then no human disposition can force his coming. God does not aim primarily to recompense people according to
their works but rather to re-create the situation of every human being. It is a wholly gratuitous action, and the 'religious' person feels
insecure in the face of such a God. It is those who are legally 'just' that cannot accept a greater God, a God of surprise; it is sinners and
non-religious people who are willing to put their hope in such a God.

l'altro, senza mezze misure) 2.

6 J. Sobrino, Christology at the Crossroads, New York 1978, p. 60: To summarize this chapter briefly, we can say that any initial attempt to
approach the historical Jesus must be done from the standpoint of the kingdom of God. This is our first basic thesis about Jesus: he did not
preach about himself, or even simply about God, but rather about the kingdom of God. This thesis enables us to properly appreciate the
activity of Jesus as liberation. It enables us to see the original unity of the horizontal and vertical dimensions in Christian faith, as well as the
relationship of sin to it. It enables us to adopt the following of Jesus, understood as a praxis rather than as a theory, as the basic
hermeneutic principle for comprehending who God is and, as we shall see later, who the Christ of faith is.
