to design and direct the work of publicspace in the pavilion of the Expo Shanghai2010.

Air Tree is a rm commitment from the city of Ma-

citizenship, producing a kaleidoscopic image of a liv -ing city. It is conceived as a technological furniture, being used not only contemplatively but promotinginteractio n. I t also aims to become energy self-suf -cient.

The Air Tree, with different technical layers, can becongured as a stand outside opaque, translucent, transparent, light, etc. Different projection textileproducts allow an unlimited combination of scenari-

ration and optimal energy to generate the neces-

sary conditions for thermal comfort.

This space will serve not only as a prelude for visi-

tors to the pavilion, but also a fun place to relax andrest in the Expo. It will also be a virtual node con-

nectivity Madrid-Shanghai, where you can receiveinformation or be an spectator of activities takingplace in real time in both cities. The aim is to bringboth cultures, create curiosity, interest and expec-

industrial site in a new public spaceincorporating buildings.

Scope: Director of the experimental urbanstrategy, design and work.

The project PLAZA ECOPOLIS is an integrated visionof urban sustainability focused on reducing energyconsumption and improve user behavior. It is incor-porated into the municipal strategic plan EcopolisRivas which presents sustainable development as avision for the municipality.

The project has to provide the following facilitites:a nursery school, a playroom, a children’s forumand a city of children around a square that acts asa new public space for the neighborhood. The hybridcharacter of the building makes an optimum useof its facilities. The design and integration of newtechnologies generate a more efcient building inall its aspects. Public space in front of the buildingincorporates a water purication system by natural

means. We believe that children should be aware of this process to become responsible adults in thenear future.

Public space PLAZA ECOPOLIS project proposes thecreation of an urban park that will be the link be-

tween all the facilities of the square. It is character-

ized by its educational program: the EnvironmentalEducation OPEN SPACE, will be an innovative spaceto address the improvement of urban environmentsince the early education

European Silver Medal Award(Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction)

The site is occupied by the municipal landll, cur-

rently in the process of renaturation and ecologicalrehabilitation, a process that will take several yearsto consolidate.

We take this temporary circumstance as leit motif of the project, understanding that temporal processesare very close to architecture. We occupy the site fora limited period of time.We articially construct, on the existing at, a tem-

poral landscape, so that a new level (+2.50 m) is

created on which it is possible to build lightweightstructures.

This new topography creates enclosures or rings of different sizes in whose perimeter buildings are in-

tegrated in continuity with the new landscape, elimi-

nating boundaries between natural and articial.

We propose an alternative to the traditional style of stadium, designed as a construction traditionallyassociated with concepts such as long-invarianceand massive use of natural terrain. The proposedmodel, by contrast, is connected with conceptssuch as exibility, processing and lightness as wellas the idea of cohabitation with the natural environ-

ment in a respectful and that does not compromisethe future of long-term place.

The Transformer Taekwondo Arena, as a version of “instant city” will offer a changing image, able toadapt to user needs and environmental conditionsat the time.

The stadium is conceived as a series of layers sus-

space where visitors can move freely through an un-determined boundary between interior and exteriorto emphasize its proximity to the landscape.

This project aims to give new life to residual spacesin urban centers and especially in central Madrid.

We consider it of particular interest to propose jointsolutions to share uses in wasted space of the city.By small scale interventions we may release smallareas to be used in the mean time between demoli-

storage area of the city and turn it into apublic space.

Scope: Director of the strategic plan.

The Natural History Museum in Chapultepec Park,Mexico City, has a profound process of upgradingits infrastructure. In Section II of the park, there arefour concrete tanks receiving all the water in MexicoCity prior to distribution to the public.

The proposal is about reusing these four tanks tocreate new applications: education, sports, enter-tainment and playgrounds. Lightweight structuresare connected to the edge of the enclosures to gen-

erate connections and uses without interfering withthe concrete structure.

Interventions provide many conditions for butter-

ies to stay in the park and try to recover the biotopethat is conducive to their return.

Urban action completed with students from theschool of Architecture. For the action we choose anempty and dusty site adjacent to an area declared

as a World Heritage zone, and soon we discoveredthat this area has an urban classication as a greenspace. However, this space is being used as a gigan-

tic parking area that has dominated the neighbour-hood.

Each team was given a 400€ budget, which wewere able to utilize through good management andestablishing priorities. 150 phone calls, 450 hoursof work, 20 tons of recycled asphalt, 5 elm treesplanted by a local resident, 7 privets, 3 ginkgo trees,50m2 of aromatic shrubs, 10 lorry tyres, 10 litres of paint, 2 Town Council benches, 20 parkings spaceseliminated...A park in 5 days! This park represents aseed of public space for the neighbourhood, as it is

handed over to the local residents for them to claimand maintain it, or abandon it altogether.

In contrast to traditional problem-solving methods

for reactivating degraded public spaces in histori-cal centers, we believe another form of interventionis possible - one without spending vast amounts of money, time, and energy. We focus on low-cost ac-

tions capable of generating responses from resi-dents, in effect obtaining a system of self-producedrevitalization where the citizen plays an active rolein the creation of public space.

This proposal demonstrates new notions of neigh-

The city is an ecosystem where there is contact, ex-

change and communication between people, groups

and institutions. Public space is the link, the sceneof intensied contacts, rather characteristic of de-

mocracy and the principle of freedom. It is the physi-cal expression of the collective and the social andcultural diversity.

A public space should be a support to citizenship, ameeting place for all, in which the participation of each of the individuals who occupy, as dened andcharacterized. Improve public space is the key toimprove cities. The ecological reconguration of thecity is a strategy for the creation of mechanisms topromote citizen participation: a launching pad forself-regeneration of the urban fabric.
