DESIGN OF SURVEY : HISTORY FOR INDOOR RADON DATARADON SCREENING - Long term Indoor radon data - from 2001 to 2019- collected by the BABEŞ-BOLYAI UNIVERSITY (UBB) Prof. Cosma’s team
The source of indoor radon data set - surveys and research projects:
Geographical distribution of Rn levels in territory, choosing areas with varied geological structure forseveral master and doctoral works in 600 buildings, including workplaces and houses (2001 – 2019)
Studying the regional radon situation: the impact of radon (2008 – 2011) in triggering lung cancerbased on population exposure (case-control study) in 406 individual homes of Transylvania (SERTIRproject)
Exhaustive sampling in radon-prone areas: 883 dwellings of Ştei-Băiţa radon-prone area (Bihor) weremeasured as a result of PhD Thesis (2008-2009) and European project IRART (2010-2013)- highresolution characterization of population exposure to radon (IRART project)
2012 - 2016 - systematic measurements of radon in 3500 homes, soil and water for roughly a third ofthe Romanian territory (16 counties out of 42) to complete THE ROMANIAN RADON MAP (RAMAROproject), followed the EC- JRC recommendations
2016 – 2019 - SMART_RAD_EN project – Radon screening and integrated maps for 1000 houses frommain Romanian metropolitan agglomerations – BUCUREŞTI, CLUJ-NAPOCA, IAŞI, TIMIŞOARA, SIBIU

DESIGN OF SURVEY: INDOOR RADON MEASUREMENT PROTOCOL
using track-etch CR-39 detectors (RadoSys, Hungary) exposed on ground floor levels of dwellings, at 1 –
1,5 m distance from the floor (NRPB protocols) exposed period: 3-6 months -annual mean for all
data, by using seasonal correction factors the processing of results and the automatic reading
of detectors was performed in LiRaCC- RadoSys-2000System
sampling points were selected randomly (based ontelephone directory and inhabitants registry)
standardized questionnaire has been applied: tocollect information about the measurement site (e.g.house type, building materials, living habits)
a quality assurance program - the metrologycertification of detectors and periodical internationalintercomparisons to calibrate the instruments

FUTURE PERSPECTIVES MAIN FORTHCOMING CHALLENGES
LiRaCC - “CONSTANTIN COSMA” RADON LABORATORY
A STEP FORWARD…. To complete the indoor radon map for Romania at NATIONAL LEVEL
To measure public buildings with high occupancy factor in MODERATE AND HIGHRADON PRIORITY AREAS - schools, kindergartens, hospitals, banks, mayors – incooperation with local authorities
The first PILOT project regarding the assessment of indoor air quality in publicschools and kindergarten in Cluj-Napoca (financed by Cluj-Napoca City Hall)
To provide national guidelines to control indoor radon exposure (measurements,diagnosis/ prevention and remediation)
To promote Information campaigns to raise awareness of the population
Thank you for your attention!
