OBVERSE: Months from January to June: images drawn from the Beethoven frieze; on the right a knight who is a symbol of the heroic virtue of art as a way of achieving joy; the knight’s progress is being hindered by hostile forces which are symbolized by three female figures, the Gorgons. REVERSE: Months from July to December: images drawn from the Beethoven frieze; the female figure of Poetry playing a lyre corresponds to the male element on the obverse; the figures on the right represent the achievement of joy, when any sorrow calms down in an embrace with Poetry.

OBVERSE: Months from January to June: images drawn from the Beethoven frieze; on the right a knight who is a symbol of the heroic virtue of art as a way of achieving joy; the knight’s progress is being hindered by hostile forces which are symbolized by three female figures, the Gorgons. The tension stirred up by the hostile forces is expressed and conveyed by the vertical element on the background. REVERSE: Months from July to December: images drawn from the Beethoven frieze; the female figure of Poetry playing a lyre corresponds to the male element on the obverse; the figures on the right represent the achievement of joy, when any sorrow calms down in an embrace with Poetry. Just like a pentagram the horizontal element on the medal’s field recalls the musical movement accompanying the embracing lovers.
