Metropolis è un’associazione culturale che opera sul territorio nazionale e che si propone la promozione e produzione di iniziative artistiche legate all’arte, alla musica e allo spettacolo.

Nata nel 2001 dall’unione di un team di artisti, l’associazione, attraverso la collaborazione con gli enti locali, è riuscita a creare sul territorio una realtà culturale e artistica a tutto tondo: arti visive, teatro, musica, reading e incontri letterari.Metropolis ha realizzato la sua prima produzione, il musical “Welcome To The Machine” nell’estate della sua nascita. Alla prima produzione ne sono seguite altre, sia nell’ambito della prosa (“Il Re Muore” – di Eugène Ionesco 2002), (“Lo Strano Caso D” - testo e regia di Emiliano Galigani, 2006) che nell’ambito musicale (“Circo Faber” 2003), che in quello video (documentario “Storie di Carta” 2004) e cinematografi co (“Zones” 2005, “Il Settimo Annuncio”, 2010). Nel 2004 nasce Cartasia, Festival Internazionale della Carta, che nel 2010 diventa Biennale consolidando il suo prestigio e la sua visibilità a livello internazionale.

Founded in 2001 by a team of artists, Metropolis, through cooperation with local authorit ies, created a cultural and artistic setting. Its f irst production was the musical “Welcome To The Machine”, in the summer of its birth. After this, further productions have followed: “The King Dies” by Eugène Ionesco (2002), “Circo Faber” (musical, 2003), “Paper Stories” (documentary, 2004) , “Zones” (movie, 2005), “The Strange Case of Mr. D”, written and directed by Emi l iano Ga l igan i , (2006) , “The Seventh Announcement” (movie, 2010). In 2004 the f irst edit ion of Cartasia-International Paper Festival, was real ized. In 2007 Cartasia became a Biennial consolidating its prestige all over the world.

Cartasia è una Biennale d’Arte Contemporanea, un evento culturale di ampio respiro che si svolge a Lucca, (Toscana, Italia): Cartasia unisce l’industria della carta al veicolo comunicativo artistico.

Nata nel 2004 è arrivata nel 2010 alla sua quinta edizione. La manifestazione ha tra le sue finalità la diffusione dell’importanza della memoria storica relativamente alla tradizione cartaria e del riciclo. Cartasia si propone di raggiungere questi obiettivi attraverso l’espressione artistica che utilizza la carta come fonte d’ispirazione.Il cuore dell’evento è costituito dal concorso che vede protagonisti i progetti di artisti provenienti da tutto il mondo, selezionati da una giuria di esperti. Le opere scelte, rigorosamente realizzate in carta e cartone, vengono ubicate nelle piazze e nelle vie della città, dove è possibile ammirarle e interagire con esse. L’installazione artistica inserita nell’ambiente cittadino prende così vita: le opere hanno un loro spazio che si vede, si sente e si attraversa. A far da corollario alla mostra en plein air, esposizioni monografi che ed eventi, che creano un ricco calendario di iniziative lungo tutto l’arco della Biennale.Cartasia si è confermata nel corso degli anni come evento d’importanza internazionale, e continua a promuovere nel panorama mondiale l’avanguardia artistica che usa la carta come mezzo espressivo.

Cartasia is a Biennia l of Contemporary Art, an extensive cultural event that has been developing in Lucca (Tuscany Italy), with environmental purposes: Cartasia joins the industry of paper with the artistic communicative mean.

Born in 2004 it has reached in 2010 its f ifth edition. The event holds, among its aims, the spread of the historical memory for the paper tradition and for the importance of recycle. Cartasia intends to reach these targets through the artistic expression which uses the paper as source of inspiration.The heart of the event consists of a contest where the projects by art ists coming from the al l over the world are selected by a jury of experts. The selected works, rigorously realized in paper and cardboard, are set in the squares and streets of the city, where it is possible to admire them and to interact with them. In this way, the artistic installations so put in the city environment, seem to come to l i fe: the works have their own living-space that can be seen, felt and crossed.Furthermore, beside the en plein air collective exhibition, the event displays monographic exhibitions and happenings in order to offer a rich calendar of activities all along the period of the Biennial.

Carta, cartone, schizzo, modello, pieghe, assemblaggi, montaggio, inaugurazione, mostra, complimenti, critiche, smontaggio, bilancio, Cartasia.

Progettare, costruire e installare delle sculture in carta

in luoghi pubblici, strutture che devono resistere un

mese all’aperto, sotto la pioggia, alle intemperie,

agli eventuali danneggiamenti causati dall’uomo. Un

progetto originale e ambizioso, una sfida.

Quando ho ricevuto la proposta di partecipare,

nell’aprile del 2004, non ho esitato ad accettare.

Avevo già in mente da tempo una scultura

monumentale che avesse come elemento base

bobine di carta giganti e sentivo che era arrivato il

momento di concretizzare la mia idea progettuale;

una riproduzione della struttura cittadina di

Lucca - con i suoi vicoli, le mura - in una sorta di

labirinto, costituito interamente da bobine e cartone

ondulato. Con il Comitato Organizzatore scegliemmo

di lavorare, per il primo anno, su un terreno

sperimentale: non conoscevamo la disponibilità delle

cartiere, promotrici principali per quanto riguarda la

materia prima dell’opera da realizzare, né l’interesse

all’eventuale supporto degli Enti Istituzionali. Erano

molte le incognite. Se questa prima esperienza

avesse funzionato, negli anni a venire avremmo fatto

ricorso alla creatività di numerosi artisti organizzando

un concorso internazionale, convocando una giuria

di esperti, e istituendo una manifestazione. Tutto

questo si è concretizzato, e ho potuto vedere

Cartasia crescere e affermarsi come Biennale d’Arte

Contemporanea, testimoniando l’attenzione verso

l’avanguardia artistica che utilizza la carta come

mezzo costitutivo delle opere.

Paper, cardboard, sketch, model, folds, assembly, installation, opening, exhibition, compliments, criticisms, disassembly, budget, Cartasia.

Cartasia: to plan, to build and to install paper

sculptures in public places, structures which should

withstand for one month in the open air, under the

rain, subjected to bad weather, to the possible

damages caused by human intervention. An original

and ambitious project, rather a challenge. When

I was asked to participate, in April 2004, I didn’t

hesitate and immediately accepted. For a long time

I had been keeping in my mind the thought of a

monumental sculpture which had as basic element

giant spools of paper, and I felt that the moment

had arrived to realize my idea; a reproduction of the

city structure of Lucca - with its alleys, the walls -

in a sort of labyrinth, entirely built with spools and

waved cardboard. Together with the Organizing

Committee, we chose to work for the first year on an

experimental ground: we didn’t know the availability

of the raw material from the paper industries, neither

whether the institutional bodies would be interested

in supporting. There were a lot of unknown issues. If

this experience had worked out, in the years to come

we would resort to the creativity of many artists,

organizing an international contest, summoning a jury

of experts, and founding a Biennial exhibition. Now

that everything has been fulfilled, I’ve been able to

see Cartasia grow and impose itself as a Biennial

of Contemporary Art, confirming the increasing

attention towards the artistic avant-garde that uses

paper as the main mean for the work of art.

Spendere tempo e risorse in cultura è principalmente

sinonimo di sviluppo e promozione territoriale. Que-

sto primo e per certi versi ovvio assunto non può

essere disgiunto dal considerare l’investimento in

cultura come portatore di uno sviluppo sociale, etico,

economico ed estetico. Promuovere la cultura vuol

dire anche preoccuparsi di un tema fondamentale:

il recupero della nostra memoria storica.

Ciò che eravamo (senza voler fare operazioni nostal-

giche, ma unicamente per conservare un patrimonio,

conoscerlo e rafforzare le proprie radici per affrontare

le sfide future con gambe che non siano d’argilla) va

preservato, tramandato e comunicato a mio parere

in ogni luogo e con ogni mezzo possibile, in maniera

trasversale, coinvolgendo tutte le generazioni.

Questo è esattamente quello che volevamo fare

quando abbiamo pensato a Cartasia.

La manifestazione nasce da un’eccellenza produttiva

territoriale, dalle sue radici storico culturali, con l’am-

bizione di essere luogo di confronto per lo sviluppo

dell’avanguardia creativa mondiale. Un ambito dove

gli artisti si confrontano utilizzando la carta come

mezzo espressivo. Abbiamo creato la manifestazione

contando su queste peculiarità, su un contesto (la

città di Lucca) di estremo pregio, unendo la formula

del simposio (artisti che si incontrano per realizzare

le loro opere in un workshop permanente), quella

del concorso e quella delle mostre e degli eventi.

Cartasia attraverso l’utilizzo della carta (con la sua

storia, le sue possibilità espressive, il passato e il

futuro) crea un fil rouge che unisce tutti i suoi eventi.

Lo sviluppo sostenibile, il coinvolgimento delle indu-

strie, il recupero della memoria storica, l’avanguar-

dia artistica; temi che si sono uniti nel corso degli

anni attraverso la funzione promozionale dell’arte.

La campagna stampa nazionale ha avuto ogni anno

un riscontro sempre maggiore, tanto da obbligarci a

guardare oltre i confini, puntando a sfide globali. Le

collaborazioni con Enti Internazionali si sono molti-

plicate: Sofia (Amateras Paper Festival), Apeldoorn

(Holland Paper Biennial), Charmey (Triennale du Pa-

pier), gli Istituti Italiani di Cultura all’estero (New York,

San Francisco), la città di Metz (Francia).

Tutto questo con la consapevolezza che produrre

cultura equivale a lasciare un segno profondo del

proprio passaggio, contribuendo al benessere eco-

nomico, sociale ed estetico della comunità.

To invest time and resources in culture mainly means

territorial development and promotion. This first and,

in some way, obvious assertion cannot be disjoined

from considering the investment in culture as

carrier of a social, ethical, economic and aesthetical

development. To invest in culture, also implies dealing

with a fundamental theme: the resumption of our

memory. The memory of what we were (any nostalgic

operation, though, but the protection of our cultural

heritage, being aware of it and strengthening our

own roots, in order to face the future challenges) has

to be preserved, handed down and communicated,

in my opinion, in every place and with every possible

mean, crosswise, involving all generations.

This is exactly what we wanted to do when we

thought about the making of Cartasia.

Cartasia is a biennial exhibition of contemporary

art, born from a territorial productive excellence,

and from historical and cultural roots, with the

ambition to be a ground for cultural exchange for the

development of the artistic worldwide “avant-garde”,

facing a more and more interesting mean which is

paper. We have created the Biennial counting on

the these peculiarities, on a extremely fine context

(the city of Lucca), mixing the Symposium’s formula

(artists that meet each other to realize their works in

a permanent workshop), with a contest, exhibits and

happenings. This melting pot has a fil rouge that links

all the events: paper, its history, its possibilities. The

past and the future.

Sustainable development, industrial paper world,

historical memory, artistic avant-garde, territorial

promotion; instances that have gone together

throughout the years in the name of the promotional

function of art. Each year, the national press campaign

has always had such a great success, so that we

felt compelled to look beyond our usual borders,

aiming to more global challenges. Therefore, Cartasia

has been establishing more and more international

partnerships: Sofia (Amateras Paper Festival),

Apeldoorn (Holland Paper Biennial), Charmey

(Triennale du Papier), the Italian Institutes of Culture

(New York, St. Francisco), the city of Metz (France).

To produce culture means to leave a deep mark

of our own passage. To produce culture means to

bring economic, social, aesthetical development to

the community.

CartasiaIL CONCORSO

Il cuore di Cartasia è costituito da un concorso

finalizzato alla realizzazione di progetti monumentali

in carta ed è strettamente vincolato all’utilizzo

predominante di questo materiale.

Il concorso, promosso e divulgato a livello

internazionale attraverso la stampa e il web, prevede

l’elaborazione di opere e progetti in carta o affini,

prevalentemente derivati dal riciclo (cartone ondulato,

tubi, anime, materiale di riciclo, tessuto non tessuto)

con un’attenzione particolare all’ecologia.

Ogni partecipante, sia individualmente che in gruppo,

si iscrive inviando il proprio progetto e il proprio

curriculum al Comitato Organizzatore.

Gli elaborati sono poi selezionati da una giuria di

specialisti in base ai criteri di valutazione specificati

nelle regole del concorso: capacità di collocazione

all’interno dello spazio urbano, idoneità dei materiali

utilizzati e rispetto delle norme fondamentali in

materia di staticità e sicurezza.

Ogni edizione di Cartasia propone un tema

a cui i partecipanti devono attenersi per poi

successivamente realizzare le proprie opere. Gli

artisti selezionati sono infine invitati dal Comitato

Organizzatore a soggiornare per circa un mese a

Lucca, al fine di realizzare i progetti lavorando gli uni

accanto agli altri in un simposio di collaborazione e

scambio. E’ proprio per questa modalità realizzativa

che Cartasia si distingue nel panorama dei festival

d’arte contemporanea.

Una volta realizzate, le installazioni vengono dislocate

all’ interno delle principali piazze della città, dando

vita a una vera e propria mostra en plein air.

The heart of Cartasia consists of an international

contest, aimed at the realization of monumental

projects and is tightly bound to the predominant use

of paper. The contest, internationally promoted and

developed through press, media and web, provides

the realization of works in paper or similar, mainly

obtained from recycle (waved cardboard, pipes,

recycled paper, etc) with a particular attention to

ecology.

Each participant, either individually or in group, enters

for the contest by sending a project and a CV to the

organizing committee. Subsequently, the projects

are selected by a jury of experts in compliance with

the principles of evaluation fixed by the contest rules.

The project must be exhaustive in terms of: its

position within the urban space, the materials used

and the respect of fundamental rules of stability and

safety.

Every single edition of Cartasia has a main theme

that the artists must follow while realizing their works.

The selected artists are eventually invited by the

organizing committee to spend one month in Lucca,

in order to realize their projects in a symposium, in

a climate of collaboration and exchange. In this

way, Cartasia distinguishes itself in the panorama

of contemporary art festivals. Once realized, the

installations are set in the main squares of the city,

giving birth to a real en plein air exhibition.

La mostra en plein air è il fulcro intorno al quale si

sviluppano in ogni edizione diversi percorsi espositivi

e happening, tutti rigorosamente legati dal fil rouge

della carta.

Nel 2004, ad affiancare l’opera monumentale “La

Città di Carta” di Nicolas Bertoux, la mostra “Futuri

Remoti,” di David Sani, che ripercorre e testimonia

– attraverso immagini, documenti e macchinari – la

vita storica della carta, lo stretto legame in atto da

secoli tra questo prodotto e il territorio.

Sempre nella prima edizione è stata presentata

la video proiezione “L’alba di Plutarco”, del video-

artista Gianluca Cupisti: l’opera è stata realizzata

direttamente sulle pareti della struttura “La Città

di Carta”. Nel 2005, accanto alla installazioni

monumentali di Goran Cpajak (Serbia), Ron Mehlman

(USA), Sylvestre Gauvrit (Francia), Monica Michelotti

(Italia) e Catherine Fourniau (Belgio), sono state

presentate due esposizioni fotografiche: “Futuri

Remoti “ di David Sani e “Carta e Caratteri “ di Enzo

Cei. E’ nel 2007 che Cartasia inizia ad incrementare

la produzione di eventi e mostre che ruotano intorno

al concorso. “Impressioni di Carta”, mostra collettiva

realizzata ed allestita nei suggestivi ambienti dell’

ex Manifattura Tabacchi di Lucca, ospita otto artisti

che fanno rivivere questo splendido spazio post-

industriale aprendolo per la prima volta al pubblico:

le originali tele di Nicoletta Boris, i suggestivi

carboncini su carta di Davide Frisoni, le foto di

Alessandro Giuliani, David Sani e Alyssia Lazin, i

rilievi, assemblaggi, scatole-sculture, libri-oggetto,

paesaggi urbani e composizioni astratte di Adamo

Modesto, i dipinti di Pavel Kapic (su tela) e Cécile

Defforey (su carta tissue).

In alcuni bar del centro storico di Lucca sono state

organizzate le personali di Glauco Guidotti e Marina

Ngah Ondigui, entrambi pittori a olio. Presso i locali

della Bottega 27, Simone Gelli scultore, ha esposto

le sue opere, mentre Enzo Cei ha organizzato la sua

personale fotografica presso il Comune di Capannori.

Nel comune di Porcari, la Fondazione Lazzareschi

ha ospitato la splendida esposizione di Caterina

Crepax, con i suoi vestiti di carta creati con materiale

di scarto, insieme a quella di Clizia Ornato e Angela

Simone, con i loro gioielli.

Inoltre eventi teatrali, rassegne letterarie e concerti,

tutti realizzati nella cornice dell’antica manifattura.

Nel 2009 è la volta di Anteprima Cartasia, realizzata

per annunciare la trasformazione in Biennale della

manifestazione e introdurre la quinta edizione.

Protagoniste dell’anteprima due installazioni

monumentali: “Ri-Parliamone” di Enzo Iorio, Stefano

Azzini e Massimo Cincidda e “Come Diamanti” di

Stefano Giovacchini. Evento teatrale dell’edizione lo

spettacolo di teatro-danza “Meta-Morfosi - I” della

Compagnia Teatrale Metropolis.

Con Anteprima Cartasia inizia una proficua

collaborazione tra Metropolis e il progetto “Giri di

Parole”, promosso dall’Assessorato alla Cultura e

dalla Biblioteca Comunale di Porcari, in collaborazione

con il Centro Studi Cavanis e l’Associazione Culturale

Sextum. Giri di Parole è un’ iniziativa che ha come

obiettivo quello di far incontrare le persone con i libri.

Ispirato all’idea del bookcrossing il progetto prevede

la libera circolazione di libri nell’ambiente urbano,

dove l’utente li può trovare e leggere, eventualmente

restituire, prestare, e incrementarne il numero

portandone di nuovi. Più di 30 scaffali, progettati

e realizzati in cartone, sono posizionati in spazi

inconsueti ma di grande passaggio, dove il fruitore

può prendere i libri. Nel 2010 ad accogliere Cartasia

è il bellissimo complesso dell’Ex Cavallerizza: l’artista

Anna Onesti con le sue creazioni ispirate all’oriente

“Rituali Senza Tempo”, Caterina Crepax con le

sue ultime realizzazioni stilistiche “Sogni Vestiti di

Carta”, Hemmes, il pittore degli strappi, e la collettiva

“Amateras” (opere in carta dalla Bulgaria).

In parallelo la personale di Hiroaki Asahara

“Catturando Luce e Aria”, in Fondazione Lazzareschi

a Porcari e la mostra/performance “Cattedrali” di

Federica Ricotti, allestita nella Chiesa dei Padri Serviti

(Complesso Agorà) nel centro storico di Lucca.

The en plein air exhibit, resulting from the contest,

is the artistic hub around which, in every edition,

different paths and happenings are developed, all

strictly connected through the fil rouge of paper.

Within Cartasia’s first edition in 2004, beside

the monumental work “City of Paper” by Nicolas

Bertoux, we held the photo exhibit “Remote Futures”,

by David Sani, which goes along the historical life

of paper and testifies, through images, documents

and machineries, the tight bond between this

product and our territory. Still in this first edition, the

video projection “The Dawn of Plutarco” has been

introduced, by the video-artist Gianluca Cupisti. The

documentary “Paper Histories” has been produced

as well.

In 2005 beside the monumental installations by

Goran Cpajak (Serbia), Ron Mehlman (USA),

Sylvestre Gauvrit (France), Monica Michelotti (Italy)

and Catherine Fourniau (Belgium), two photographic

shows were held: “Remote Futures” by David Sani

and “Paper and Characters” by Enzo Cei. It’s in 2007

that Cartasia begins to increase the production of

events and shows beyond the contest. “ Impressions

on Paper”, collective exhibit held in the striking

scenery of the Ex Manifattura Tabacchi (the old

artists in this gorgeous post-industrial space that

was opened to the public for the first time: the original

paintings by Nicoletta Boris, the charming charcoal

drawings on paper by Davide Frisoni, Alessandro

Giuliani’s photos, as well as David Sani’s and Alyssia

Lazin’s, the sculpture-boxes, the object-books, the

urban landscapes and the abstract compositions by

Adamo Modesto, the paintings by Pavel Kapic (upon

cloth) and by Cécile Defforey (on paper tissue). Two

personal exhibitions, Glauco Guidotti and Marina

Ngah Ondigui, both oil painters, were held in two

cafés in the historical center of Lucca. At “Studio

27”, the sculptor Simone Gelli exposed his works,

while Enzo Cei was exhibiting in the close town of

Capannori.

In Porcari, the Lazzareschi Foundation hosted

the splendid exhibit by Caterina Crepax, with her

paper clothes created with re-used materials; Clizia

Ornato and Angela Simone, with their paper jewels,

surprised the visitors. Theatrical events, literary

reviews and concerts, were also held inside the

frame of the ancient Tobacco Factory. In 2009,

Cartasia-the Preview, was realized to announce

the transformation of the event into a Biennial

and to introduce its fifth edition, presenting two

monumental installations: “Let’s Talk it Again” by

Enzo Iorio, Stefano Azzini and Massimo Cincidda

and ”As Diamonds” by Stefano Giovacchini.

Within this 2009 preview, the theater-dance show

“Meta-Morphosis I”, by Metropolis Theatre Company,

was presented for the first time. With Cartasia-the

Preview, Metropolis starts a profitable cooperation

with the project “Giri di Parole”, promoted by the

municipality of Porcari. Giri di Parole aims at making

people “meet” books. Inspired by the idea of

bookcrossing, the project allows the free circulation

of books, so that the user can find the books in many

and sometimes uncommon places, read them, return

them, lend them and perhaps bring new ones. More

than 30 stands made out of cardboard are set in

uncommon but usually crowded places. In 2010 the

beautiful frame of the Cavallerizza, in Lucca, hosts

Cartasia: Anna Onesti with her creations inspired to

the far East “Endless Ritual”, Caterina Crepax with her

last collection “Dreams Dressed in Paper”, Hemmes,

the painter of tears and the collective Amateras

(works in paper from Bulgaria). Besides, the personal

exhibit “Catching Light and Air” by Hiroaki Asahara,

hosted by Lazzareschi Foundation, and the exhibit/

performance “Cathedrals” by Federica Ricotti, inside

the Church of the Fathers, in the historical center in

Lucca.

Metropolis è un’associazione culturale che opera sul territorio nazionale e che si propone la promozione e produzione di iniziative artistiche legate all’arte, alla musica e allo spettacolo.

Nata nel 2001 dall’unione di un team di artisti, l’associazione, attraverso la collaborazione con gli enti locali, è riuscita a creare sul territorio una realtà culturale e artistica a tutto tondo: arti visive, teatro, musica, reading e incontri letterari.Metropolis ha realizzato la sua prima produzione, il musical “Welcome To The Machine” nell’estate della sua nascita. Alla prima produzione ne sono seguite altre, sia nell’ambito della prosa (“Il Re Muore” – di Eugène Ionesco 2002), (“Lo Strano Caso D” - testo e regia di Emiliano Galigani, 2006) che nell’ambito musicale (“Circo Faber” 2003), che in quello video (documentario “Storie di Carta” 2004) e cinematografi co (“Zones” 2005, “Il Settimo Annuncio”, 2010). Nel 2004 nasce Cartasia, Festival Internazionale della Carta, che nel 2010 diventa Biennale consolidando il suo prestigio e la sua visibilità a livello internazionale.

Founded in 2001 by a team of artists, Metropolis, through cooperation with local authorit ies, created a cultural and artistic setting. Its f irst production was the musical “Welcome To The Machine”, in the summer of its birth. After this, further productions have followed: “The King Dies” by Eugène Ionesco (2002), “Circo Faber” (musical, 2003), “Paper Stories” (documentary, 2004) , “Zones” (movie, 2005), “The Strange Case of Mr. D”, written and directed by Emi l iano Ga l igan i , (2006) , “The Seventh Announcement” (movie, 2010). In 2004 the f irst edit ion of Cartasia-International Paper Festival, was real ized. In 2007 Cartasia became a Biennial consolidating its prestige all over the world.

Cartasia è una Biennale d’Arte Contemporanea, un evento culturale di ampio respiro che si svolge a Lucca, (Toscana, Italia): Cartasia unisce l’industria della carta al veicolo comunicativo artistico.

Nata nel 2004 è arrivata nel 2010 alla sua quinta edizione. La manifestazione ha tra le sue finalità la diffusione dell’importanza della memoria storica relativamente alla tradizione cartaria e del riciclo. Cartasia si propone di raggiungere questi obiettivi attraverso l’espressione artistica che utilizza la carta come fonte d’ispirazione.Il cuore dell’evento è costituito dal concorso che vede protagonisti i progetti di artisti provenienti da tutto il mondo, selezionati da una giuria di esperti. Le opere scelte, rigorosamente realizzate in carta e cartone, vengono ubicate nelle piazze e nelle vie della città, dove è possibile ammirarle e interagire con esse. L’installazione artistica inserita nell’ambiente cittadino prende così vita: le opere hanno un loro spazio che si vede, si sente e si attraversa. A far da corollario alla mostra en plein air, esposizioni monografi che ed eventi, che creano un ricco calendario di iniziative lungo tutto l’arco della Biennale.Cartasia si è confermata nel corso degli anni come evento d’importanza internazionale, e continua a promuovere nel panorama mondiale l’avanguardia artistica che usa la carta come mezzo espressivo.

Cartasia is a Biennia l of Contemporary Art, an extensive cultural event that has been developing in Lucca (Tuscany Italy), with environmental purposes: Cartasia joins the industry of paper with the artistic communicative mean.

Born in 2004 it has reached in 2010 its f ifth edition. The event holds, among its aims, the spread of the historical memory for the paper tradition and for the importance of recycle. Cartasia intends to reach these targets through the artistic expression which uses the paper as source of inspiration.The heart of the event consists of a contest where the projects by art ists coming from the al l over the world are selected by a jury of experts. The selected works, rigorously realized in paper and cardboard, are set in the squares and streets of the city, where it is possible to admire them and to interact with them. In this way, the artistic installations so put in the city environment, seem to come to l i fe: the works have their own living-space that can be seen, felt and crossed.Furthermore, beside the en plein air collective exhibition, the event displays monographic exhibitions and happenings in order to offer a rich calendar of activities all along the period of the Biennial.
