    MINISTRY OF HELPS

The motivating factor of the Helps Ministry is LOVE. (I Corinthians 13:1-8)

MINISTRY OF HELPS IS NOT: Puffed up, Vaunt, Envious, Easily provoked.

    WHO IS THE GREATEST?

Jesus considered Himself a servant of the Father. (Matthew 20:20-28)

Elisha, the servant of Elijah. (I Kings 19:16-21)

Elisha ministered to Elijah. The word "minister" means to contribute, serve, attend, and wait

upon. Elisha made the decision to minister to Elijah.

    FAITHFULNESS COMES BY CHOICE

Elisha remained with Elijah whether he spoke judgement or blessings. Don't get upset with

those who bring correction from God. (II Kings 1:13-15)

Faithfulness brings about a reward. (II Kings 2:1-12)

WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THE WORD "HELP"?

    One who gives assistance

Laying hold of; an exchange; or to lay hold of, so as to support.

    H Having

    E Enough

    L - Loving

    P - People

    S - Serving

WHAT IS THE MINISTRY OF HELPS? (I CORINTHIANS 12:28)

a supernatural ministry listed among things such as miracles and healing.

It is a gift God has set in the church to bring to pass the vision or goal given to the Pastor.

If you are helping anyone in the church or helping the weak or needy, you are operating in the

ministry of helps, a gift set in the church by God. This is a ministry just as valid, just as anointed

as if God had asked you to be a teacher, prophet, or apostle. An usher, nursery worker, sound

engineer, and musician -- anyone giving assistance in the body is in the Ministry of Helps.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE HELPS MINISTRY?

To perfect (mature) the saints. (Ephesians 4:11-12)The Pastor can preach an anointed sermon, but if the people in the Helps Ministry are not doing

their jobs, the visitor may not want to come back. The Queen of Sheba saw Solomon's men and

servants stand continually before him and they were happy. (II Chronicles 9:5-7)

WHO SETS "HELPS" IN THE CHURCH?

The ministry of helps is a supernatural ministry set in the church by God. (I Corinthians 12:18,

    26-28)

    SOME EXAMPLES OF HELPS MINISTRY

Moses could no longer help the people individually, so he cried out to God. (Numbers 11:10-

    17)

Jesus sent the twelve disciples out to spread the Gospel in the towns and villages. Jesus was

only one man; he could only do so much. (Matthew 10:5-8)

Jesus multiplied the loaves and fish to feed more than 5,000 people. He distributed the food

    through the Ministry of Helps.

Jesus was asleep in a boat during a storm. He was physically exhausted from preaching. The

disciples were rowing so that Jesus could get the rest He needed. They were operating in the

    Helps Ministry. (Matthew 8:23-26)

THE WORK OF THE MINISTRY OF HELPS (I CORINTHIANS 12:18-28)

When you don't do your part someone else suffers. (I Corinthians 12:26)

Free your Pastor of other duties so he can stay before God. (Acts 6:2-3)

We need to help God's man with the vision. (Exodus 17:11-12)

Be a faithful servant. (Proverbs 13:17; 25:13; 28:20) You may think you are not qualified for

the Ministry of Helps, but God is the One who qualifies you.

And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, thirdteachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of

    tongues.

    1 Corinthians 12:28

Everybody wants to be a leader, everybody wants to call the shots. Everybodywants a pulpit ministry.

God doesn't want everybody to be a leader or a teacher: (James 3:1). In the body ofChrist we need arms, legs, fingers, toes, and all the various organs and muscles, not

ust a bunch of heads! If everyone is a leader, then a state of lawlessness exists, inwhich, as in the days of the judges, "...everyone did what was right in his own eyes,"

    (Judges 21:25).

The desperate need in all sorts of Christian ministries is for those who will dedicate

themselves to the ministry of helps, a rather inglorious sounding title, but listed inorder right after miracle and healing ministries in the above text. The Greek wordtranslated "helps" means "to lay hold of, so as to support." In other words, a minister

of helps is someone who commits himself to another ministry in order to support andassist in any way he or she can.

I believe that every member of the church, or any other ministry, is called in some

way or another to the ministry of helps. God put you in your church to help out thatministry. If "the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve," (Matt 20:28),

what makes you better than Him?

Freeing the Hands of Gods Servants

The job of the helps minister is to free the hands of the leaders to do the work that

God has called them to do. In Acts chapter six, we read that a controversy had sprungup in the early church concerning the daily ministration of food to the elderly and

widows. When the matter was brought to the apostles, they replied...

"It is not desirable that we should leave the word of God and serve tables. Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of

the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business; but we will giveourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word."

    Acts 6:2-4

the ministry suffers when Gods leaders have to do every little thing in the church, when theyre occupied in mundane duties all week instead of prayer and the Word,

and getting new vision from the Lord. In the first place, somebody is called to do the

mundane thingsand that person isnt fulfilling his or her ministry if the pastor isdoing it. Secondly, if one or two people have to do everything, theyre spreading

themselves too thin, and probably doing a poor job, anyway. The do-it-all pastor andhis wife really arent getting too much done. They need help to fulfill the calling God

    has given the church.

And they need faithful, dependable help. The person who volunteers, but then turnsup missing after a few tries, is worse than no help at allbecause the ministry doesnt

    get done by anybody, and someone has to quick pick up the slack at the last minute. Ifyoure going to be a help to your pastor youve got to be there on time and every time;

theres no room for not being in the mood, or forgetting to show upsomebodyscounting on you. This is your ministry, and you wont prosper in any ministry unless

youre faithful in the little things Hes calling you to do now. Heres what Jesus saidabout helps ministry and faithfulness...

"He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in

what is least is unjust also in much. Luke 16:10-12

You have to be faithful in little things or you wont be given bigger things; you have

to be faithful in mundane things, the more physical aspects of the ministry, or youwont be trusted with true spiritual riches; and you have to be faithful under another

mans ministry before God will give you your own. There are no exceptions. Thatshow it works in the kingdom of God.

Who shovels the walks at your church? Is there a mad scramble to clear them just

minutes before the Sunday Morning Service? Is the pastor out there on weekdays, huffing and puffing, instead of seeking the Lord? How about nursery help? Is the

burden carried by the same couple of faithful people, or do the mothers end up missingmost services because theyre busy dragging fussy babies off to the back room? Does

the head usher have to run around drafting a few extra guys almost every servicebecause someone didnt show up? Who greets the visitors on those days? Who washes

the dishes and keeps the kitchen clean? Who does the weekly bulletin? Does yourpastor spend a great deal of his time answering the phone, trying to secure rides for

people, paying bills, and typing letters? I can tell you from personal experience thatthose jobs arent getting done very efficiently if hes doing them. That may be one big

reason why some churches arent growing as they could be, too.

When the church of Acts addressed the subject of helps ministries the blessing ofthe Lord came upon them mightily. They appointed seven men over the task of the

daily food administration, and left the apostles free to do what God had called them todo. The result? "Then the word of God spread, and the number of the disciplesmultiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were obedient to the

    aith." (Acts 6:7).

In order for the local church to function properly and fulfill its God-given task, theministry of helps is desperately needed: music ministers, sound persons, ushers,

secretaries, bookkeepers, nursery workers, bus drivers, kitchen help, people to prepareoverheads, edit films, make cassette copies of the sermon, man the bookstore, and do a

thousand other tasks not to mention the obvious things like Sunday School teachersand deacons. The modern church is a complex entity; its success depends on the

cooperation and involvement of every member. The difference between immature and

mature congregations is that the immature come to be ministered to, the mature cometo minister.

    A normal believer in C

To fit into the body of Christ we must able to be built up with one another in God according to

His house, His building Ezek. 43having morning revival every day. God measures us by oneness,by our functioning in our measure, by our being built up!

We have to be buildable I must be built, and able to be built up with others. This is why we

need to be desperate before the Lord today that we may be the materials for the building, thosewho go through transformation so that we may be build-able! Especially in the young adult

age, we need to realize that the essence of our spiritual experiences is NOT JUST to becomeuseful in the Lords hands, to learn to take responsibility and care for others, etc but to become

buildable! This process includes the breaking, the discipline of the Spirit, the genuinetransformation, and the entering into the building! Here you pray, study the Bible, pursue the

ministry, serve, preach the gospel in the building and for the building! Otherwise, you may be

in the ministry, enjoy the Lord, take care of other saints, know the Word of God yet you maybe in your late 50s and still not be buildable! How much we need to be actively loving the Lordandbegging Him to make us buildable, those who are built up into the Body with the saints!

We need the Lord to infuse into us a desire for His building! This is something we can pray forand ask the Lord to do it in us, but we cannot do it by and of ourselves. We need Him to

duplicate in us the desire which is in His heart for His building, until it becomes part of ourbeing! Our prayer is just like the prayer of the Israelites regarding the re-building of the temple,

may it be Your will to instill in our hearts a deep desire to do Your will, to preserve and fullfill

the commandment to build the holy temple, such as the sanctuary that Moses established at thefoot of Mt. Sinai, like Solomon built on Mt. Moriah, and as the children of Israel rebuilt as in

the days of old and in the former years!

May our prayer for the building up of the Body of Christ and for us all to be buildable surpassthat of those praying for the rebuilding of the physical temple. We need to desperately come to

the Lord about this and ask Him to make us such people.

Lord, build Yourself into us! Build us more into the Triune God! Make us those who arebuildable who are built into the Body! Save us from remaining whole, being in ourselves, and

not being built up! Lord, we are desperate for this make us buildable Christians! We want tolearn this one lesson to be built up! Gain us not only as individual spiritual and seeking

Christians, but as members of the Body built up with the other saints we have been placed with!

Lord, build us up in the Body and as the Body of Christ!
