Bergamo apprezzata per la sua bellezza urbanistica che suggerisce

Nondimeno, al visitatore pi attento, parla della sua lunga storia che di

secolo in secolo ha sedimentato strati di memoria che raccontano di

un importante passato.

Bergamo nata sul colle. Si de-ve ad un primo antichissimo in-sediamento in epoca protostori-

ca questa sua principale carat-teristica: la parte pi antica, de-limitata dalle mura, situata inalto mentre la citt moderna si sviluppata al piano.Sul colle si sono avvicendati Cel-ti, Goti, Romani, Longobardi, ma

di queste lontane presenze e ri-masto ben poco; alcuni dei mag-giori monumenti risalgono all'e-poca medievale.Il periodo pi significativo rap-presentato dai quattro secoli incui Bergamo fu soggetta a Ve-nezia, nel corso dei quali un rap-porto strettissimo, storico e cul-turale, leg le due citt.

Bergamo was founded on a hillby a first very old settlement inthe protohistoric age, which

gave it the configuration that stillcharacterizes it: the oldest partof the town, enclosed withinwalls, lays up on the hill whilethe modern centre has devel-oped on the plain.Celts, Goths, Romans, Lom-

bards succeeded on the hill, butlittle can now be seen of them:some of the most importantmonuments date back to theMiddle Ages. The four centuriesunder the Venetian dominationare the most significant period,when Venice and Bergamo werevery close, both from an histori-cal and a cultural point of view.

Auf der Piazza Vecchia, im Herzender Altstadt, stehen einige der hi-storisch wichtigsten Stadtgebude:

der Palazzo del Comune oder del-la Ragione, der Stadtturm, der Pa-lazzo des venezianischen Stadt-vogts sowie derjenige der Biblio-thek Angelo Mai, frher Sitz derStadtverwaltung. Gleich danebenliegt die Piazzetta del Duomo. ein

im wesentlichen religisen Zweckendienender Platz, um welchen sichdie Kathedrale, die Basilika SantaMana Maggiore, die Cappella Col-leoni und das Baptisterium ringen.

Costruita nel 1472 da GiovanniAntonio Amadeo su richiesta delcelebre condottiero Bartolomeo

Colleoni, la Cappella Colleoni una delle pi significative testi-monianze del RinascimentoLombardo.La basilica di Santa Maria Mag-giore, invece, fu innalzata nel1137 per voto popolare.

Tra le pi cospicue testimonian-ze del passato, Bergamo alta rac-chiude chiese e monasteri comeSant'Agostino e San Francesco.Uno dei luoghi pi suggestivi lantichissima chiesa di S. Im Auftrage des berhmten (1792)Feldherrn Bartolomeo Colleoni vonGiovanni Antonio Amadeo erbaut,

ist die Cappella Colleoni eine derbedeutendsten Zeugnisse der lom-bardischen Renaissance. Die Ba-silika Santa Maria Maggiore dage-gen konnte im zwlften Jahrhun-dert dank den Weihgaben der Be-vlkerurlg erstellt werden. Zu den

bemerkenswertesten Zeugnissender Vergangenheit Alt-Bergamosgehren Kirchen und Klster, wiezum Beispiel SantAgostino undSan Francesco. Einer der ein-drucksvollsten Orte ist die sehr al-te Kirche S. Michele al Pozzo Bi-anco, welche eine ansehnlicheZahl von Freskos aus dem drei-zehnten und dem sechzehntenJahrhundert enthlt: im Jahre 1525arbeitete hier auch Lorenzo Lotto.

Bergamo citt musicale. Nel1797 vi nato Gaetano Donizetti,il grande compositore che ha la-

sciato oltre settanta opere, tra lequali l'"Elisir d'Amore" (1832) e la"Lucia di Lammermoor" (1835),che ne decretarono la fama mon-diale. Gaetano Donizetti rimasesempre profondamente legato al-la sua citt, che ne conserva in-

numerevoli testimonianze.In Borgo Canale, appena fuori lemura che circondano Bergamoalta, si trova la sua casa natale.A Gaetano Donizetti Bergamoha dedicato il maggior teatroed un museo, ricco di cimelie di testimonianze di forte sug-gestione.

Bergamo ist eine Musikstadt. ImJahre 1797 wurde hier der grosseKomponist Gaetano Donizetti ge-

Una delle principali caratteristi-che di Bergamo sono i borghi, an-tichi nuclei urbani molto frequen-

tati nei quali si trovano negozi eattivit artigianali.Il nuovo centro, raccordo tra i bor-ghi ad est ed a ovest attraversatodal Sentierone, tradizionale luogodi passeggio dei bergamaschi.

Con gli oltre cinque chilometri dicircuito ancora ben conservati,il complesso delle mura che cir-

conda la Bergamo sul colle una delle pi importanti testimo-nianze di cinte bastionate delCinquecento. Venezia ne inizila costruzione nel 1561 facen-do di Bergamo una poderosa for-tezza sul confine con lo Stato di

Milano. Lungo il grandioso anel-lo nel quale si aprono quattroporte, si snoda una suggestiva efrequentatissima passeggiata concontinui scorci panoramici sullacitt moderna sulla pianura esulla montagna.

Ber-nardino alle due chiese dedica-te al patrono S. Alessandro adornarsi delle pale daltare delLotto.Ancor pi importante sottoli-neare come il pittore trov inBergamo una sorta di patriaideale dove raggiunse le formepi alte della sua arte, fonden-

do gli apporti della cultura bra-mantesca e raffaellesca con leinfluenze leonardesche e del-la pittura lombarda, e condizio-nando di fatto la cultura pittori-ca bergamasca per almeno unsecolo.

The period spent in Bergamo -regarded by Lotto (the Venet-ian pictor famosissimus) as

his adopted home - was with-out doubt the happiest of hislife. It was also the most pro-ductive. In the 12 years span-ning 1513, when the San Bar-

tolomeo altarpiece was paint-ed, and 1525, when the fres-coes depicting Stories from theLife of Mary were completed inthe church of San Michele al

Pozzo Bianco, Lotto also pro-duced the S. Maria Maggiorechoir intarsias and the altar-pieces adorning the 2 church-es of S. Alessandro patronsaint of Bergamo and S. Spiritoand S. Bernardino. The artistspersonal fusion of elements of

Bramantes, Raffaellos andLeonardos art with those of theschool of Lombardy can beseen as marking the high pointof Lottos artistic expression. Formore than a century to come,painting in Bergamo was to be

influenced by the art of Loren-zo Lotto.

waren zweifellos di glcklich-sten und produktivsten seinesLebens.Sein Aufenthalt in Bergamo be-gann im Jahre 1513, als er dasAltarbild von S. Bartolomeo mal-te, und endete im Jahre 1525

mit dem Freskenge mlde, dasdas Leben der Jungfrau Maria inder kirche S. Michele al PozzoBianco darstellt. Ausserdemschuf er in dieser Zeit die Intar-sien des Chors in S. Maria Mag-giore und schmuckte 2 Kirchen,die dem heiligen Schutzherrnvon Bergamo, S. Alessandro,geweiht sind, sowie die KirchenS. Spirito und S. Bernardino mitAltarbildern. Lorenzo Lotto ver-stand es, in seine Werke dieKunstrichtungen von Braman-te, Raffaello und Leonardo ein-

fliessen zu lassen und diese mitder lombardischen Malerei zuvereinigen, womit er in Berga-mo den Hhepunkt seinesknstlerischen Schaffens er-reichte. Die Malerei in Bergamowurde fur mehr als ein Jahrhun-

dert durch die Kunst von Loren-zo Lotto geprgt.
