EvEry yEar along thE rEmotE north WEst coast of australia, severe tropical depressions

(cyclones) ravage our oceans and shores – the home

to our precious South Sea pearl shell. After such impact,

the surviving pearl shell and all who laboriously care

for them, commence the hard work of regeneration.

At harvest, when presented with a magnificent, large,

fine South Sea pearl, it’s easy to forget such adversity

in its beauty. This story of survival usually remains the

plight of the pearl farmer, only.

But when the economy deals a tough blow, every

part of the industry from farm to wholesaler, manufacturer

to retailer is affected. This was the ‘one-in-a-one-hundred-

year’ cyclone we all feared and we all felt.

Despite the challenging year that defined the luxury

jewellery sector for 2009, I am proud to report that the

team at AUTORE not only survived the storm by achieving

more than satisfactory results, but we also managed to

expand our customer base, widen our trade fair presence,

open a stunning Flagship store in Sydney and collect a

prestigious international design award along the way.

I am confident that the secret to our success in these

recent difficult times has been through the nurturing of

strong relationships with clients, supporting those who

have supported us, reaching out to new markets and

maintaining a vision to create bespoke South Sea pearl

jewellery which continues to redefine the image of the

pearl by marrying truly innovative design and exquisite

craftsmanship with the world’s most extraordinary pearls.

As we prepare to launch our new South Sea pearl

jewellery collection, Venezia, at Baselworld 2010 (with

some optimism that the global economic trends are

improving), we can all look forward to a stronger, calmer

year ahead. I thank my dedicated team: all those who

have helped us survive this storm and everyone who

continues to believe in AUTORE, sharing our passion

for the South Sea pearl.

As carefully crafted as the pearl jewellery itself, AUTORE’s new Sydney flagship

celebrated its opening on King Street in the heart of the CBD in December and there’s

more to come. Designed to present the South Sea pearl company’s stunning, original

award-winning pieces in a sumptuous salon setting, the store offers AUTORE devotees

a new kind of retail experience.

According to Rosario: “This store allows our customers to see the inspiration behind

our pieces, to share in the pearl’s journey from pristine waters to beautifully crafted and

designed jewellery. We are offering the most extensive collection of AUTORE jewellery

ever seen in Australia and a unique experience of the contemporary beauty of pearls.”

Guests and devotees on the night included Olympian Ian Thorpe, who has himself

collaborated with Rosario on a pearl jewellery collection for men; media magnate and

business man Kerry Stokes, catwalk beauty Anneliese Seubert and a host of beautiful

women modelling AUTORE’s innovative, contemporary designs.

Throughout the evening, and to the excitement of every woman in the room, trays

of delicate pearl meat punctuated the flow of finely crafted canapés. Among the spoons

holding the delicacy six beautiful pearls lay hidden. The best place to ambush the waiters

carrying the prized spoons was at the top of the stairs surveying the scene and the wonderful

displays of contemporary pearl pieces worn by some of the world’s most beautiful women –

Angelina Jolie, Halle Berry, Cate Blanchett and Uma Thurman.

Imagine: a warm, still summer’s night; Christmas in Sydney; the sun setting on a 37°C day; the crowd gathering to its party peak; Champagne flowing. Music filtered out to the street, and AUTORE owner Rosario Autore, with his wife Jane, stood welcoming guests inside the new three level concept store to a VIP event that was hot, hot, hot.

Continuing his global domination of contemporary world jewellery awards, Rosario Autore’s vision has again brought success. In 2009, for the

very first time, the prestigious UK Jewellery Awards recognised the global

importance of the Italian jewellery industry by introducing an award dedicated

to the very best of Italian jewellery design. What is most significant is the

inaugural winner of the award is AUTORE’s Alessio Boschi. “Yet again, Alessio

is confirmed among the best jewellery designers in the world today,” explains

AUTORE CEO, Rosario Autore. Using AUTORE’s unique range of South Sea

pearls, Boschi and AUTORE have created inspiring, dynamic jewellery that

redefines craftsmanship and contemporary innovative design.The judging panel

praised the extraordinary, clever designs that placed the world’s finest pearls

as hero, calling them brave, sublimely beautiful experiments, unique pieces

with a real story to tell. Boschi himself was honoured to have had the

freedom to create his pieces using such magnificent South Sea pearls.

Combining the beauty and healing power of the sea with

exclusivity and individuality, AUTORE has created a limited edition

collection of accessories for the iconic skincare brand Crème de La Mer.

To celebrate 10 years of luxury skincare in Australia, exquisite silver

spatulas inspired by swimming dolphins were designed and feature

a unique ocean-styled jewel, which can be removed and worn as a

separate piece of jewellery. Accompanying the 500ml, 250ml and 60ml

pots, and available through selected David Jones Australia stores, only

17 handcrafted, limited edition pieces were created.

AUTORE’s critically acclaimed Five Ss South Sea Pearl Classification Guide, developed and championed

by CEO and AUTORE founder, Rosario Autore, has won him

a medal of distinction from the French Senate. In recognition

of his valuable work and dynamism creating a trade standard

for the classification of pearls, the award was presented in

late 2008. The Guide plays an important role in educating and

building consumer and retailer confidence in buying, selling and

understanding South Sea pearls internationally. AUTORE was

also invited as part of the award to address guests attending

the 9th Annual French Association of Gemmology Congress to

discuss the AUTORE brand history and present the Guide.
