Il suo essere sensuale richiamava gli sguardi di tutti i giovani rampolli del regno. Al suo cospetto, tutti le cascavano ai piedi. Su di lei circolavano incredibili storie: pensavano fosse piovuta dal cielo, trasportata da un fenicottero rosa, una dea proveniente dagli abissi

del mare, per quella voce ammaliante come una sirena.

Once upon a time, in the old Campania lands, there lived a beautiful princess, who had zephyr green eyes, light olive skin and coffee-black hair.

Her charm drew the Reign young men’s admiring looks. Everyone around her fell at her feet. They thouhgt that she was simply fallen out of the sky, carried there by a pink flamingo or even

a goddess coming out of the depths of the sea, because of that charming mermaid voice.

ll Re sapeva a chi darla in sposa, ma troppo giovane e troppo bella era la sua Partenope, per imporle quella scelta. Siccità e povertà imperversavano e il vicino regno dei cumani

reclamava un’alleanza di sangue o sarebbe stata guerra. Un giorno il padre la condusse in riva al fiume Sebeto, invitandola a seguire il cammino del destino per la pace dei due popoli. Ma la giovane Partenope non prestava attenzione,

convinta che non esistesse un pretendente tanto audace da sfidare la sua bellezza.

Cuma kingdom was claiming for a blood tie and threatening war. One day, her father led her to the Sebeto river bank, inviting her to follow the destiny path,

as she was convinced that there was no one bold enough to challenge her beauty.

Per alleviare i pensieri del Re, la Regina Madre invitò a corte la compagnia di Pulcinella. Le maschere di Sarchiapone, Sciocciammocca e Pazziariello allietarono la Principessa

Partenope, conti, marchesi e concubine, raccontando in canto e melodie, la storia di una giovane vergine, in un regno lontano, decisa a suicidarsi perché promessa

in sposa all’anziano tiranno. Proprio mentre Pulcinella si apprestava ad uccidere il tiranno,

Partenope interruppe la farsa con un inconsolabile pianto.

The Queen Mother decided to invite Pulcinella and his company to court, in order to alleviate the Kings thoughts.

Sarchiapone, Sciocciammocca and Pazziariello masks fascinated Princess Partenope, the Counts, the Marqueses and the concubines, telling the story of a young virgin, who lived

far away, who decided to kill herself because she refused to marry the old tyrant. But as soon as Pulcinella was killing the despot,

Partenope silenced the charade with a persistent, inconsolable, crying.

Pulcinella uscì di scena e condusse la principessa sulla terrazza di Posillipo da cui si poteva ammirare l’intero golfo, poi lasciò cadere la sua maschera, offrendo a Partenope il privilegio

di guardare il viso dell’attore, come nessuno fino ad allora era mai riuscito a fare.

Pulcinella stepped off the stage and led the Princess to the Posillipo terrace, from where they could admire the entire gulf.

Then, he dropped his mask, allowing Partenope to see his face, like no one before her has been able to do.

Un dono che Partenope non tardò ad indossare, perdendo d’un tratto la sua straordinaria bellezza. Pulcinella scappò via e promise di non farsi più vedere,

troppo audace era stato il suo gesto d’amore.

A gift that Partenope immediately wore, losing suddenly her outstanding beauty. Pulcinella ran out and promised not to come back, as his act of love was too audacious.

L’indomani a corte il Principe dei cumani intravide Partenope fece quasi per raggiungerla, quando ella nel girarsi si mostrò con la maschera aquilina di Pulcinella.

La sorpresa fu tale che il principe scappo via e non volle saperne più nulla né delle nozze, né di combattere contro una creatura senza volto.

The day after, when the Prince of Cuma came at court, he saw Partenope and tried to reach her,but she suddenly showed her face, covered by Pulcinella mask.

The surprise was so big that the Prince ran away and wanted nothing more to do with the wedding and about fighting that faceless creature.

Partenope, crebbe senza più mostrarsi al mondo per la sua bellezza. Il suo regno divenne grande come lei, con leggi e giuste e degne di rispetto.

Il terreno tornò fertile, si diffusero le arti e il teatro e la sua terra fu chiamata città di Partenope, antico nome della città di Napoli.

Passarono molti anni e Partenope aveva tramutato la sua bellezza in intelligenza.

Partenope grew without showing her beauty to the world. Her reign became great as her, with good and honorable laws.

The fields turned to be rich and fruitful again, while arts and theater quickly spread. That land became known as Partenope the old name of the city of Naples. Many years passed, and Partenope had turned her beauty in intelligence.

Un giorno, un mercante si recò a corte, prese la principessa per mano, la condusse sulla terrazza di Posillipo e le chiese in dono la maschera.

Partenope adagiò dolcemente la maschera sul volto del mercante, mentre lui le sussurrava che Pulcinella era tornato.

Partenope e Pulcinella tornarono a sorridere insieme, mentre sul golfo di Napoli luccicava un tramonto di incredibile bellezza.

One day, a merchant went to the court, took the Princess Partenope’s hand and led her to the Posillipo Terrace. Then, he asked her to give him the mask.

She gently place the mask on the merchant face, while he whispered that Pulcinella was back. Partenope and Pulcinella smiled together,

while a breathtaking sunset was shining on the Gulf of Naples.
