Ergo Gym: innovation at a click

signed to encourage the motor and sensory
development of the very youngest through the
use of products which promote the physical
and cognitive interaction of children with the
objects that they find all around them. As a
range of children’s fitness products launched
at the end of 2008, the very name gives an
idea of the twin objectives of the range: Ergo
to underline the search for the greatest com-
fort through the application of ergonomic
principles, and Gym to emphasize the aware-
ness of physical activity that should ideally
start from the first few months of life. To use
Chicco’s words: “Happiness is a journey that
starts young”.
Designed in 2007 at the Chicco plant in Grandate
in the province of Como, by the Research and
Development division together with the design-
ers from the Villaggio delle Idee using a multi-
disciplinary approach – and with contributions
from experts in the fields of design, ergonomics,
pedagogy, material science, structural technol-
ogy and marketing – the Baby Trainer gym and
the Baby Jogging walker take the child’s physiol-
ogy into account and are designed with an in-
novative series of connecting joints that make it
highly adjustable.
Manufactured mostly in thermoplastic resins

The sense of designThe principle of the alterity or “otherness” of
childhood goes back to Jean-Jacques Rousseau
(1712-1778), where the child was no longer consid-
ered a miniature adult, but rather an “other” be-
ing, with specific characteristics through which
it relates to the world in its own way. Education
should be developed around observation of the
needs of the child who, when left in complete
liberty, is capable of educating him or herself.
The task therefore of designers, parents and edu-
cators is that of observing the child and organ-
izing the environment in such a way that the
child can understand the qualities that objects
possess independently and how and what they
are. Rousseau’s thinking could be described as

of its time; it is clearly recognizable in the Ergo
Gym: form, function, size, materials and colours
have been studied based on behavioural obser-
vation, anthropometric measurements and the
motor-cognitive potential of the children who
will be able to use these products entirely au-
tonomously, and, naturally in complete safety;
adults can assemble the products and, as Maria
Montessori (1870-1952) would say, “be near while
being far away”.
Products for growing togetherBaby Trainer has been designed to adapt to
the childs growth through simple adjustments:
thanks to its double joint system, it is a first gym
(from birth), then a baby seat (from 4 months),
then an activity mat (from 6 months) and finally
an activity board (from 9 months). Numerous
theories and ideas lie behind the design: for ex-
ample the teachings of Bruno Munari, according
to whom “to the individual, the outside world is
explored through intelligence coming from logi-
cal manipulation and operations, for the purpose
of trying to understand things and phenomena
that are around us. Sight, sound, touch and all
the other receptors interact simultaneously and
our intelligence tries to coordinate all these sen-
sations in order to understand what is happen-
ing.” (Fantasia, Roma-Bari, Laterza, 1977). Then
there is the theory of multiple intelligences as
developed by the American psychologist Howard
Gardner, who has suggested the idea of nine dif-
ferent intelligences as opposed to the idea of a
more general one: from logic-mathematical to
linguistic, from spatial to musical, to kinaesthet-
ic etc. Reinforced by strong theoretical-method-
ological theories in addition to material-techno-
logical thinking, the Chicco baby trainer allows
the child to carry out synaesthetic activities ca-
pable of stimulating these different intelligences:
activities that give free rein to imagination, de-
signed through a feedback-action approach and
intended both to stimulate logical, motor and
sensorial capacities (touch, sound and sight),

the bar by straps which are adjustable according
to the child’s shape, and the child is invited to
touch them so as to set off cheerful sound and
light effects. In the baby seat position, the child
is leant against a raised back rest, and, held in
place with back and crotch straps, can inter-
act with the various hanging objects by using
the feet. When completely collapsed, the Baby
Trainer becomes an activity mat where the neck
and back muscles can be strengthened; in this
position the child has a new friend, the musical
teething ring, which can be placed on either side
of the mat in order to promote symmetric lateral
development. Finally, once having acquired the
ability to sit upright unaided, in the fourth as-
sembly position the child, sitting on the mat can
play with the electronic panel developing fine
motor skills and logical association.
Intended to be used from nine months onwards,
the Baby Jogging has been studied specifically to
help the child during its first steps, by continu-
ally guaranteeing the correct posture with arms
outstretched and shoulders well apart. The sup-
port can be arranged in six different positions ac-
cording to the physical size of the child as he or
she grows. As before, the learning experience of
walking is enriched through sound and light ef-
fects: the rhythm increases with the pace, and if
the child stops, the music also stops, inviting the
child to continue with the activity.
One click and it’s doneThe new Ergo Gym line is part of the Chicco –
“Where there’s a child” philosophy, and this is
the payoff for the Artsana Group brand – which,
through remaining faithful to the principles of
good design and according to correct order of
priorities, pays particular attention both to the
needs of the child, and to those of everyone who
comes into contact with the products presented.
Product design receives particular care, but at-
tention is also given to the user’s instruction
manual and the disposal, packaging, sales meth-
ods, customer information support and acces-
sory services.
Shifting the focus of attention to the needs of
adults, it is worth underlining the second main
characteristic of this new product line: collaps-
ibility. According to Per Mollerup, man is col-
lapsible by nature, both physically and psycho-
logically, and therefore he finds great satisfaction
in collapsible tools and objects, but despite the
fact that collapsibility is an elementary prin-
ciple of design as applied to numerous objects

in everyday use – from the telescope to the um-
brella, from newspapers to Venetian blinds, from
furniture to pushchairs – it is still necessary to
see this reduction of an object’s size as an ad-
vantage, and to ensure that this transformation
is mechanically possible (Collapsibles: A Design
Album of Space-Saving Objects, London, Thames
& Hudson, 2001). A simple principle followed by
Chicco in this new line: avoiding the situation
where cumbersome products clutter up smaller
and smaller spaces: the advantage is a system of
easy to use joints, with audible warning tones
to indicate correct assembly together with con-
trasting colours to allow instant part identifica-
tion taken as the adopted solution. Open/shut:
all it takes is one click, and it’s done.
Carugati, Chicco, Milano, Mondadori Electa, 2004). Semplicità dell’approccio. Curiosità. At-tenta valutazione dei bisogni. Nuovi i prodotti, sempre valida la ricetta.
Simplicity and attention
In just one product, Baby Trainer combines both a gym and
an activity mat. This is the principle of “product coupling”,
the combining of two complementary products, for example
in the case of shoe polish packed together with a rag for
cleaning, or in the case of shampoo and conditioner together,
dishwasher powder that contains polish as well, and even
further back, the combination of feeding bottle and teat: a
combination developed in-house at Chicco. We have to go
back to the end of the 1950s, shortly after the arrival of Enrico
in the Catelli household, the firstborn who would be affection-
ately known as Chicco. Then, mothers still had to buy feeding
bottles and teats separately, sterilize them and then assemble
them, thereby often compromising the sterility. A new ap-
proach was needed. This was in 1958, and it was the “Century
of the Child”, as Ellen Key described the Twentieth Century
(1900; The Century of the Child, New York, The Arno Press,
1909). Chicco was born, the brand name of Artsana products
for children, together with the integrated baby’s bottle con-
sisting of a bottle, teat and sealing ring. Simplicity, curiosity
and attention to requirements were the essential elements for
designing effective products: this was the formula for success
of Pietro Catelli, founder of the Artsana group as described
in the pages of the book dedicated to the brand (Decio G.R.
Carugati, Chicco, Milano, Mondadori Electa, 2004). Simplicity
of approach. Curiosity. Careful evaluation of requirements. The
products may be new, but the formula is still valid.

Design come strategia di mercato
Design as a market strategy
Design as a market strategy. From Paris, the home of cosmetics, to Milan, the city of design and communication; the history of a company that sells its products in 40 countries worldwide and, thanks to the emotional ties with the public that its packaging has given to its im-age, which has established its identity in the world of prêt-à-porter, aiming to conquer the youth market with “dream-maker” cosmetics.

From Paris to the world marketThe Deborah Group cosmetics company was
founded in Paris in 1903 under the name Bonetti
Frères, from the surname of the two founding
brothers. The immediate success of the Diader-
mina cream (1905) led to the creation of the Mi-
lan office as far back as 1906, where the company
still has its head office, as always under the lead-
ership of the Bonetti family.
The Deborah brand has always been consid-
ered Italian, and in fact holds first place in the
Italian cosmetic market (Iri Data, Make-up no
blister, Iper Super e Drugstore, January-October
2009). Even production has its roots in Italy, and
in Lombardy in particular, where almost all the
make-up lines are produced, apart from nail var-
nish and liquid eyeliner. The packaging comes
from suppliers both in Italy and abroad.
The Deborah Group presence in the international
market has grown over the years, despite having
to contend with various multinational groups
possessing the capacity to operate in the global
market through the use of considerable eco-
nomic and productive power. Today the Deborah
Group has a presence in 40 countries and the for-
eign billing represents 30 per cent of the total
turnover.
perceived authority which was the mark of suc-
cessful merchandise. Deborah therefore tried
to create through the packaging design that
emotional hook, or link, that creates between
consumers and producers the most immediate
(in the sense of not being logically explained)
short-circuit creator of value.
Historically the company’s headquarters has
been Milan, a city whose name Deborah used in
one of its principal brands (Deborah Milano, cre-
ated in the Sixties) and whose inspiration could
only have come from the city’s DNA. In the Seven-
ties a strong bond was forged between Deborah
and the world of fashion, in particular the prêt-à-
porter concept, the most “democratic” sector of
the fashion system. In 2000 the choice was made
to focus on design as an emotional and demo-
cratic language, involving two Italian designers
each noted for their different design approaches
and specificity of language. Mario Trimarchi and
Stefano Giovannoni therefore worked on differ-
ent product lines, creating a distinctive identity
for each one.
Packaging and production technologyIn order to preserve the brand image and the
trust built up with consumers over almost a
century, Mario Trimarchi and his Fragile stu-
dio first started with a cautious design strat-
egy, taking small steps so as not to revolution-
ize the product’s images too quickly. In design
terms, this meant a redefinition of the pack-
aging range of colours and the use of new fin-
ishes and surface textures (iridescent paints,
UV treatments, visual games using shiny/matt
surfaces). Since the first market response was
very positive, research into the global image
of the package was later studied more thor-
oughly, in order to create a definitive homoge-
neity between product value, pack quality and
brand perception.
In addition to surface textures, Trimarchi also
worked in-depth on technological research, go-
ing so far as to transfer the co-injection plastic
moulding process from the toothbrush manu-
facturing sector to the world of make-up. The
results can be seen in the D-Gloss lipstick and
No Weight and Black+Long mascara packages.
This last, created from plastic and rubber and
having a sinuous and irregular shape is still
today among the brand’s most recognizable
products.

Packaging as a promise of beautyThe key words that Trimarchi worked with were:
asymmetry, out of scale, anemones, landscapes,
characters. Words that encompass the ideas of
indefinability and inconstancy, typical of dreams.
More than in any other sectors, cosmetic pack-
aging has a definite role of “dream-maker”, that
image and promise of beauty that the purchas-
er asks of the product. In particular, the most
award-winning product of this new design strat-
egy is the Atomic Red Lipstick. Launched in 2007
it is today the mainstay of the range: not just a
best-seller, but a genuine long-seller, too.
Stefano Giovannoni has instead devoted his de-
sign energies to the younger sector, simplifying
the design language so far as to transform it into
simple shapes (Icons collections 2009), icons of
an immature imagination that needs simple
points of reference but with a strong emotional
impact.

Anemoni at Fuori Salone
To crown the work carried out in
the last few years with the world
of design, Deborah put on its own
show at the Fuori Salone di Milano
2009. More than a traditional
product display, Anemoni was a
show demonstrating the delicate
tactile-aesthetic relationship that
make-up products establish with
consumers. The asymmetric and
changeable shapes of lipsticks,
mascara and make-up kits
imitate living shapes (like the sea
anemones mentioned in the title)
in an underwater dream world
which alone could give the idea
of a life in constant and delicate
movement, just like the feminine
universe. The design for the show
was authored by Frida Doveil and
Mario Trimarchi, studio Fragile.

A substantial contributionBeyond its first positive impact on the public,
the design concept has been able to create a
constant and increasing dialogue between the
Deborah products and the consumers, so much
so that from 2001 to today, the increase in brand
perceived value was such that the public even ac-
cepted a unit price increase on certain product
lines. This translated into a notable reduction
between value MS (Market Share) and volume
MS: in other words, not only high sales of lower
priced products, but an increase in sales of prod-
ucts in the upper sector. Thus Deborah has be-
come number one in the Italian cosmetics mar-
ket, both by value and by volume of sale.
Make-up collectionsIn addition to design, in recent years Debo-

guages and strategies in the world of fashion.
Every year, authentic fashion collections (P/E

famous fashion system brands like No-l-ita,

cation level: the advertising style, the product
presentation brochures and the same articles
in which Deborah products appear, especially
in women’s magazines, faithfully follow the
fashion dictates by creating a representation
of the female image which is elite in form but
democratic in content, and it is perhaps this
prize-winning element that allowed the Debo-

An airbag that you wear. Experience in the production of technical and work clothing, combined with research into individual protection systems, has created an innovation that brings safety and protection together with the comfort of sportswear. Design and production both come from one single organization: from weaving to dying, from cut-ting to packaging.

An airbag for motorcyclists The concept of functional clothing is an idea
which has been around for years, but which is
in continuous evolution: by this we generally
mean a product with defined characteristics
and functionality which works in the same way,
every time it is used. Thus, when talking about
protective clothing, we are talking about mate-
rials that are fire resistant, antistatic, breath-
able, waterproof etc., and whose performance
in a defined situation is due mainly to its spe-
cific chemical composition, from the physical
properties or the textile structure used to create
the garment.
However, when talking about the need for pro-
tection from impacts, the are of use becomes
different: in actual fact, when using the object,
it must be capable of changing its technical
characteristics in an extremely short period of
time, from one second to another, according to
the level of risk: as for example what happens
in the case of airbags systems for the human
body, that is, items of clothing that in every-
day use are perceived simply as normal items
of clothing, but in case of impact transform
themselves immediately into perfect protective
instruments.
An example of advance technology in this sense
is the Motoairbag produced by Alfredo Grassi: a
waistcoat worn by the motorcyclist which has
an airbag system folded inside it, and which in
case of accident, automatically activates by in-
flating an airbag which protects the motorcy-
clist’s vital areas.

Textile technology and protection efficiencyEffectively, these devices are made up of two
basic elements: the airbag system and the
item of clothing that contains it. The airbag
system itself consists of three elements: the
trigger, which recognizes the moment when
it has to set off the airbag system, the gas
generator which supplies the gas necessary to
inflate the third element, which is the protec-
tive bag.
In addition to the correct design and construc-
tion of the mechanical part of the airbag system,
of equal importance is the choice of material
components to be used both for the protective
bag, which has to be resistant and efficient,
and for the item of clothing which contains the
airbag system. The “cold explosion” technology,
(developed and patented by DPI Safety, another
Lombard company) allows the use of airbags that
are extremely light, reliable and rechargeable,
and able to come into contact with the human
body.
Motoairbag is worn like any other item of cloth-
ing over the normal jacket, and is light and
comfortable; at the moment of falling from the
motorcycle, it is activated by means of a cable
hooked to a special belt linked to the frame, thus
protecting the rider’s spinal column as soon as
he or she falls.
Compared to a traditional protective device, the
Alfredo Grassi airbag offers 10 to 12 times more
impact protection, and the protected area is
much larger, covering the entire spinal column,
from the nape of the neck to the sacral region:
the airbag inflates completely in 0.08 seconds,
which means that with a jolt or impact at a
speed of 50 km/h it is totally inflated in 110 cm,
that is, before the motorcyclist is completely
thrown from the saddle.
There are many applications: from motorcycling
to horse riding, from extreme cycling to the au-
tomotive and aeronautical sectors.
Motoairbag is a genuine example of the flexibility
and interactivity of technical textiles. As a mat-
ter of fact, the handmade fabric is not intended
to be a unique primary element, but rather a
component which, when assembled with other
plastic and metal parts, transforms an item of
clothing into something much more technologi-
cal: an airbag device for the human body.

From weaving to manufacturingSince 1925 Alfredo Grassi, leader in the protective

a success that for us was important not just in
terms of product design – the “miracle costume”

creator of this model of innovation is Francesco
Fabbrica who, together with Patrick Cervizzi,

The ingredients were all there, but nothing would

Nature teaches, just watch itIn spite of the fact that more than half of the hu-
man body is made up of water, and a good part of
the earth’s surfaces are covered with it, for man,
water remains an “un-natural” environment. Nei-
ther fish nor amphibian, man has always been the
protagonist and creator of extraordinary changes
aimed at compensating for his own defects, ac-
cording to an evolutionary line clearly explained
by Rita Levi Montalcini in her In Praise of Imper-
fection: My Life and Work (New York, Basic Books,
1988) a year after winning the Nobel Prize for
Medicine. We had a poor sense of smell, certainly
not comparable to that of other living creatures,
so we couldn’t hunt by sniffing the ground, and
therefore we had to make use of our eyesight. In
order to see our prey better, we learned to walk
upright, to free and specialize our hands; we did
everything possible to make up for having weak
lower jaws: being unable to use our teeth to in-
flict harm, we learned to make tools. And, as we
added, being unable to slide through the water
like fish, we studied first the movements, then the
form and then the skin of the inhabitants of the
underwater world in order to swim faster. Thus,
by going with an insight that now seems obvious
– fish don’t have seams –, Jaked created a costume
using a bi-elastic textile fibre covered with an ex-
tremely thin polyurethane film, seamless because
it was entirely thermo-welded, and probably the
thinnest ever made at 0.4 millimetres thick when

not being used, becoming even less when in
use. Even the zip (to facilitate taking on and
off), is completely covered with polyurethane
so as to provide no resistance while moving
in the water. Since friction in water is gener-
ated not only by rubbing but is conditioned
by the shape of the submerged body and the
quantity of water moved, the design moved to-
wards looking for the best muscular compres-
sion by starting once again, from a very simple
principle: a sheathed muscle doesn’t vibrate,
therefore it creates less friction and wastes less
energy.
The Pavia athlete Alessandro Calvi helped
hone things to perfection; results arrived
quickly and in 2008, at the Beijing Olympics,
Jaked was the Italian National team supplier
after having signed a technical sponsorship
agreement with the FIN which will run up to
the London Olympics in 2012, not to mention
the numerous athletes who succeeded at the
Rome World Swimming Competition wearing
the J01 series.

evolution of sportswear in Italy, it’s easy to single
out for example the importance attached to the
development of knitwear, the invention of Nylon
and Lycra, the extension of dress-making cuts, to
recognize the numerous brands that after having
been producers of socks and woolen underwear,
have expanded into sportswear: Castelli is a case
in point, with its origins in Milan in 1876, so is
Fila, established in 1911 together with Kappa,
born in 1916 as Maglificio Calzificio To¬rinese
(MCT), Turin Knitwear and Hosiery Factory.
Our story can therefore be added to the list of
profitable collaborations between designer-entre-
preneurs and athletes: in the 1950s, for example,
when ski jackets still flapped during the descent
to the detriment of aerodynamic efficiency, Col-

mar and Zeno Colò created a new article of
clothing in Nylon, fitted at the waist and with
bi-elastic tulle inserts, which clung to the body
yet guaranteed full freedom of movement; in
1952 at the Oslo Olympics the athlete and his
new jacket won the downhill gold medal (see
Maura Garofoli [edited by], Le fibre intelligenti.
[Intelligent fibres. A century of History and
fifty years of Fashion], Milano, Electa, 1991]). A
little later, in the early Sixties, history repeated
itself with Castelli, the French cyclist Jacques
Anquetil and the Tour de France won in part
thanks to the silk bodysuit sewn around the
rider so as not to flap. Two examples that serve
to underline how design ability, the dedication
of the “craftsman” – to use the words of Rich-
ard Sennett – and the instant feedback sup-
plied by the athlete allow the development of
equipment, in the widest sense of the word,
used to beat the race against the clock and
to overcome human, sporting and also tech-
nological limits. Thus in the era of smart fab-
rics and nanotechnology, it seems incredible
to remember that the yellow jersey worn by
Gino Bartali in 1948 was made of wool, as was
sprinter Pietro Mennea’s vest at the beginning
of the 1970s and the jerseys of the Italian na-
tional team at the 1978 Football World Cup in
Argentina.
Development of the system-productAs a protagonist, Jaked has contributed to this
extraordinary change that has swept through
the company and turned the world of swimming
upside down, from the athletes to the employees
and the fans: from research concentrated on the
development of muscular capacity, with equip-
ment relegated to a more or less subordinate
role, there has been a move towards other vari-
ables of the energy equation, no longer investi-
gating just how to increase propulsion, but also
how to reduce friction, increase flow, improve
the positioning in the water. Such has been
the innovative boost that for the first time, af-
ter having beated numerous records, the centre
of attention has shifted from the idea of athlete
to the idea of athlete-costume, and, as with all
extraordinary changes, only time will allow the
world of swimming to find the correct balance.
Meanwhile, the Lombardy magic team, after
having attracted the attention of the giant In-
ticom from Gallarate (who own Yamamay, by
way of explanation) continue the development
of the system-product, always in record time,
which is today divided into five lines of coordi-
nated products – J-Black (costumes for top-level
competition), J-Swim (training costumes), J-Polo
(balls, costumes and bathing caps for water-
polo), J-Acqua (swimming accessories, goggles,
sandals and shoes) and J-Club (tracksuits, sweat-
shirts, T-shirts, bathrobes and towels) – in the e-
jakedstore for distribution via online sales, and
in Jakedpool, the new project aimed at creating
an association of sports centres in which to open
Jaked sales points and promote the Jaked image.
In short, the innovation continues, and you can
be sure that there will be new surprises in store
since, as Ennio Flaiano said, “as always, we are in
a transition phase”.

The discovery of the snowboardLevel Sport produces technical gloves for snow-
boarders, freeriders, freestylers and all those ath-
letes who put their hands under serious physical
stress, as well as problems with temperature,
when practicing winter sports. Like all new gen-
eration products, the Level gloves were created
through the attention of a business man towards
what “isn’t there yet”, but which was clearly a
gap in the market.
It is no accident that Level was created in Son-
drio in 1989.
The idea came from Mauro Compagnoni, who
developed it with Valter Micheloni and Fabrizio
Giugni. Compagnoni is an expert ski instructor
who, some years before, as a twenty something,
had discovered snowboarding during a trip to
the United States. It was a relatively new sport,
born during the mid Sixties and which, during
the Eighties, started to establish it self as more
than a simple niche sport. Snowboarding was
only to become an Olympic discipline in 1998
but once back in Italy, Compagnoni immediately
started experimenting in his own back yard, that
is, in the Alps.
The story of this young company is a typical
example of how the glocalization concept has
already been in existence for many years, well
before the term had been invented: a sport cre-
ated on another continent, an expert who dis-
covers its potential and who imports it to his
own country, a “natural” environment – an ideal
setting to test and try out the product – and
manufacture that was initially local but then
with an increase in numbers was transferred to
the far East, while product research and design
stayed in Sondrio in the Valtellina.

The first ideaIn snowboarding, which uses a single board in-
stead of two skis, the athlete’s hands have a fun-
damental role in maintaining the balance and the
definition of his or her movements. The snow-
boarder touches the snow often and at times –
during jumps – actually guides the movement
of the board with his or her hands, sometimes
pivoting on the snow surface with the hands to
complete jumps or, in the freestyle and pipe dis-
ciplines, making acrobatic jumps and adopting
special positions. The hands therefore have to
be totally protected from friction and supported
during unnatural twisting movements.
Compagnoni’s first idea was to do away with the
seams along the glove fingers and substitute them
with a rubber sheath: thus halving the glove’s com-
ponents and inserting protection along the back
and palm in the leather “shell”; so, the first Level
glove “with rubber fingers” was born in 1989.

lished with W.L. Gore & Associates, Inc. to the
extent that the preformed inserts that make up
the heart of the glove are created in Gore-Tex®
while the wind-shielding membrane uses the
Windstopper® fabric.
The protective Biomex structure was developed
in the Nineties, in collaboration with Dr. Georg
Ahlbaumer, orthopedist at the Gut clinic in
St. Moritz. Biomex is an internal insert which
both supports and creates a stable position in
the delicate area comprising the palm of the
hand, the wrist and the initial part of the fore-
arm. During snowboarder falls, this is the part
that is most at risk from breaks, sprains and so
on. The insert was designed to be made from
a double thickness shock absorber material, in
order to solve both the needs for resistance and
comfort.
In 1998 a similar support was considered which
would instead be positioned on the outside of
the wrist. From this “simple” move, came a new
type of glove, aimed at athletes who practiced
carving, (a variation of alpine skiing which in
its most extreme form does not make use of ski
sticks or poles, but which allows the skier to
place his or her hands on the snow).
In 2002 the Kirax reflex stimulation system was
introduced into the glove. What Level did was
to incorporate in its product an accessory de-
veloped by Kirax's Reflex Technology based on
research carried out by a chiropractor: a wrist-
band with internal protrusions that once worn,
provided natural stimulation for the reflexes in
specific areas (wrists, and even the lumbar re-
gion) and helped to improve the athletes’ per-
formance.
2005 saw the start of the collaboration with the
Norwegian champion Aksel Lund Svindal and his
experience in the field led to the creation of the
Gore “2 in 1” technology (warm and grip sections
combined inside the same glove), technically
developed by Danilo Previsdomini. Svindal went
on to win the 2009 General World Cup wearing
these special gloves.
Among the most recent innovations of the 2010-
2011 collection, Level presented the thermoform-
ing system for the personalization of a glove’s fit
– Custom Fit – together with a new wrist sup-
port system – Impact System – which uses air
and which can be activated or dis-activated per-
sonally by the athlete.

The world of sport The most interesting aspect of Level’s manu-
facturing-business approach is probably rep-
resented by the experimental and progressive
attitude in which production naturally fol-
lows the evolution of the activities to which
the products are dedicated. Snowboarding has
spawned an apparently ever increasing number
of variations (freestyle, freeriding, pipe, carv-
ing...) each of which requires specific accesso-
ries. In these sports, there is also a particular
mood, an aesthetic style borrowed and influ-
enced by the pictures of graffiti artists and ur-
ban youth groups, which Level has been able
to interpret and represent in its product lines.
Colours, images, the Level logo printed on the
palm of the glove (to guarantee greater visibil-
ity during competitions and freestyle events),
graphic motifs dedicated to the female world...
all these drag the gloves out of the pure sports
sector, and let them loose in that indefinable
area which is the expression of belonging to
a cultural group through the use of particular
aesthetic rules.
Thanks to this identification process, the techni-
cal and aesthetic evolution of the Level product
is able to transversely provoke the interest of all
those devotees of these sports; a wide and highly
diversified group ranging from the very young
(from 15) to adults up to 50.
Ancient and modern strategiesNotwithstanding the fact that Level is a young
company, it has not followed the entrepreneurial
trend of recent years. Instead of the coldly busi-

more typically Italian business attitude. Mauro

Not a shoe, a revolution: design changes the sense of things, not just their shape. Bucking the current trend with its emphasis on technology, spectacular appearance and the glamour of the sneak-ers market sector, these shoes go back to basics and the ideas of contact with the earth, natural posture, trusting to instinct and the freedom of movement that comes to those who wear them.

Gloves for feetNothing exists that is not designed. There are
only objects designed well or badly. And then
there are objects that in addition to being well
designed, revolutionize mental habits by intro-
ducing new types of things, new models of ref-
erence. This is the case with Vibram® FiveFin-
gers®, the footwear that can only be described
by resorting to proper names for other parts of
the body, “gloves for feet”. This is then a radical
innovation recognizable also on the linguistic
level, which will find space not only in our cup-
boards but, through the effect of antonomasia,
also in our dictionaries as has already happened
with the walkman, Kleenex, the Frisbee, the
jeep, and so on up to the iPod.

new meanings, on the sense of things and of de-
sign. Like Jonathan Ive and Steve Jobs, who while
talking about the computer-office-work combina-
tion hit on the idea of a computer for everyone,
for home use, for leisure time, and came up with
the iMac Apple, in the same way Vibram – even
before thinking about shape-material-technology
– was working in depth questioning the role and
the identity of footwear. Backed by long years of
experience in the designing of high performance
soles for all disciplines, the company set about

exploring the foot and its sensory capacities and
receptors – the real heart of the project – and un-
derstanding how they interpreted the ground and
how to improve its proprioceptive capabilities.
So, while the giants of the sneakers world aim at
hyper-technological shoes, making a big song and
dance and parading glamour details, while these
same competitors are showing off suspension
and tracked soles, introducing microchips and Wi-
Fi connections, dragging in sport and rock stars
as testimonials, building in velvet, metallic or
animalier details, getting artists to decorate the
products, setting up co-branding operations with
big-name stylists and throwing themselves into
the construction of new “cathedrals in the desert”
where the consumer can experiment in the cult of
miraculous technology, Vibram goes back to ba-
sics and concentrates on the essentials: protect-
ing the foot in the most natural way possible.
Harking back to those pleasant childhood memories
when as children we ran about barefoot, you could
say that the company is following the ideals of neo-
archaism (a term suggested by Edgar Morin in 1987
to indicate a return to the past, to one’s roots, to
nature, to rediscover the source of life) in support
of that need for reconciliation with Mother Nature
which is currently at the centre of worldwide politi-
cal debate and which allows us to admire architec-
tural works such as Herzog and de Meuron’s Bird’s
Nest together with those other products that go
back to Nature. Indeed, more and more frequently,
the relationship with these things is dictated by an
ancestral urgency, if we assume that, as Baudril-
lard had already said at the end of the Sixties (The
System of Objects, London-New York, Verso, 1996),
what we consume are signs, not things.
Designed by instinctEven the idea behind the Vibram® FiveFingers®
came from a natural necessity: in the mountains,
from the urge of the designer Robert Fliri to free
himself from having to use heavy mountain
boots; a desire which then developed, thanks to
the determination of Marco Bramani. President
of Vibram, grandson of the founder Vitale and
a devotee of sailing, Bramani led the company
through biological, psychological and cultural
research aimed at the definition of a “non-shoe”
which would provide an aesthetic and sensory
experience rich in personal wellbeing, rather
than a simple improved functionality. The result
is a “foot-glove” characterized by a special sole

ticular mixture of TC1 rubber and modelled on

From Albizzate to New YorkThe Vibram® FiveFingers® was launched in 2005
and was initially aimed at those dedicated to
outdoor sports. It was a short step from bridge
running to dry land, and before long the origi-
nal model had given birth to several different
versions – Classic, Sprint, Kso, Flow, Moc, Per-
forma – varying in shape and material used to
guarantee protection in different environments:
water sports (kayaking, canoeing, surfing, wind-
surfing, sailing, and fishing), running, trekking,
yoga, fitness, wellness and travel.
This revolution in the “footwear with fingers”
started in Albizzate in the province of Varese, in
Lombardy and not far from Milan (a centre fa-
mous for fashion, design and… rubber, thanks to
Pirelli, who can take the credit for producing the
first tank-track [carrarmato] military sole con-
ceived by Vitale Bramani in 1935), the city where
Vibram opened the first single brand showroom.
Thanks to the strong company identity which
through being sensitive to distant social and cul-
tural trends became a focal point for local and
international phenomena, and thanks also to
the support of scientists like Daniel Lieberman
– lecturer in evolutionary biology at Harvard
University – the innovative “non-shoes” aroused
the interest of the bare-footing community, then
went on to conquer America and the “barefoot
tribe” – as Federico Rampini wrote in La Repub-
blica (31st August 2009) – and eventually featured
in the New York Marathon in November 2009.
Lasting innovationPredictable good fortune, however, because
as innovation expert Roberto Verganti points
out, “radically innovative products tend to
have a longer life cycle; they create higher ex-
pectations and brand value, and the reception
of future versions, which are typically just as
surprising, is better” (“Innovating Through De-
sign”, Harvard Business Review, vol. 84, n. 12,
December 2006). A happy development which
was accompanied by national and interna-
tional recognition: in 2007 the magazine Time
included the product among the best inven-
tions in the “Health” category; 2008 was the
year of the Grandesign Etico International
Award and the Premio Italiano della Creatività

Record shoes2010 instead is the year of the Bikila, the new
running model. An even higher performing sole,
insole and upper, which had a reflective 3M sur-
face: a shining tribute to the glorious achieve-
ments of the Ethiopian Abebe Bikila. In Rome in
1960, Bikila was the first black African athlete to
win an Olympic gold medal – and he would be
the first to repeat the achievement in the mara-
thon in the following Tokyo Olympics. But above
all in Rome, he was the first marathon runner
to set the world record by running in bare feet.
Maybe today Bikila would wear “gloves for feet”;
we can certainly celebrate his achievements and
attempt a reconciliation with the Earth, accepting
the effort of re-educating the foot muscles to ap-
preciate this new natural approach, and considering
Eleonora Fiorani’s anthropological analysis, accord-
ing to which “clothes are not just the shape but also
the technique of the body, and it is this connection
which conditions the way they are used: moving,
Milano, Lupetti, 2004), it is easy to imagine that Vi-
bram® FiveFingers® will change the way of walk-
ing for all of us.
