The sheer size of the Ferretti Group and the knowledgethat achieving excellence also means having and using themost suitable instruments for managing innovation, meanit is necessary to share the heritage of consolidated know-how, the testing of new technologies, product developmentand process innovation with all the brands.In continuous, direct collaboration with the EngineeringDivision, operative bodies of all units of the group and itssupplier network, Ferretti Group’s Research andDevelopment Centre specialises in thoroughly testing allinnovations before they are used in production in the variousshipyards. Its function is to check and monitor all materials,technologies and processes involved in the various stagesof building a yacht.The structure is supervised by Claudio Valpiani, GroupChief Operational Officer.The work of the Research and Development Centre canbe summarised in three micro-areas:• Researching new materials and technologies• Quality control• Industrialising products and processes

Researching new materials and technologiesAs far as research is concerned, the new materials andtechnologies available on the market are carefully studiedin order to improve the level of quality and performance ofthe yachts built. Each and every innovation used duringproduction in the various shipyards must fully conform tothe quality and safety standards which distinguish theFerretti Group, in order to guarantee the very highesttechnological standards are achieved.

Quality ControlThe Ferretti Lab’s second, important task is quality control.Specialised technicians use innovative structures andequipment to examine and check all the material sent bythe companies of the group, in order to carry out tests andcontrols which constantly confirm that each productionconforms to the top standards of quality on the world’snautical market. The reference standards which must berespected include ASTM for the American market and UNIEN ISO for those of Italy and Europe. This work permitsFerretti to make sure its suppliers respect the qualitystandards, enabling the company to establish relationshipsbuilt on trust and mutual collaboration in order to achieveincreasingly better results. The many chemical-physicaltests carried out include the saline cloud test during whichthe aging process in a saline environment is acceleratedin a controlled chamber, and used to check all thecomponents and equipment assembled externally on theGroup’s yachts. The aggressiveness of the marineenvironment is reproduced on a time scale, an hour isequivalent to a week, and measures the effect on thematerials being tested. This test makes it possible to assessthe behaviour of each and every component before it isinstalled, and also assess suppliers. Moreover, varioustests specifically involve the characterisation andcomposition of the raw materials. These include the tensile,bending and compression tests used to check theresilience of materials, and the “endurance test”, treatmentwhich determines the quality, elasticity and sturdiness ofa given material, and singles out any eventual faults.Accurate tests using specific instruments are carried outon gelcoat and plastic reinforced by fibreglass, amongwhich the glossmeter (which measures the sheen of thegelcoat), viscosimeter, durometer, and thermostaticbath etc. Burning test (calcination) is a quality controltest which makes it possible to monitor the content ofglass fibre and resin in percentage inside laminate and alsoto check the exact number of layers of texture in thelaminate itself. Ricerca di nuovi materiali e nuove tecnologiePer quanto riguarda la parte di ricerca, vengono studiatinuovi materiali e nuove tecnologie disponibili sul mercatotesi a migliorare il livello qualitativo e le prestazioni delleimbarcazioni costruite.Ogni innovazione adottata in fase di produzione nei diversicantieri deve essere conforme a tutti gli standard di qualitàe sicurezza che contraddistinguono il Gruppo Ferretti, agaranzia di raggiungimento di altissimi standard tecnologici.

Controllo qualitàLa seconda importante attività svolta dal Ferretti Lab è ilcontrollo qualità. Tramite strutture e attrezzatured’avanguardia, i tecnici specializzati esaminano e controllanotutto il materiale inviato dalle aziende del Gruppo pereffettuare test e controlli a costante riprova che ogniproduzione è conforme ai massimi standard qualitativi delmercato nautico mondiale.Tra le norme di riferimento chedevono essere rispettate ricordiamo ASTM per il mercatoamericano e UNI EN ISO per quello italiano ed europeo.Grazie a questa attività è possibile tenere sotto controlloil rispetto dello standard qualitativo dei fornitori, in mododa stabilire un rapporto di fiducia e reciproca collaborazioneper giungere a risultati di livello sempre superiore.Tra i numerosi test di natura chimico-fisica effettuati, citiamola prova in nebbia salina: in una camera ad ambientecontrollato viene accelerato il processo di invecchiamentoin ambiente salino di tutti i componenti e le attrezzaturemontate esternamente sulle imbarcazioni del Gruppo.Su scala temporale (es. un’ora equivale a una settimana)viene riprodotta l’aggressività dell’ambiente marino,

misurandone l’effetto sui materiali sottoposti a test.Questa prova permette di conoscere il comportamento diogni componente nel tempo prima della sua installazione,e di fare uno screening dei fornitori.Sono inoltre previsti vari test che toccano specificatamentela caratterizzazione e composizione delle materie prime,come i test di trazione, flessione e compressione per

Industrialising products and processesProduct industrialisation is pursued by means of a carefulstudy of the projects and production processes, analysingthe construction methods used, with the aim of findingsolutions and procedures which make processing simplerand more streamlined, while still maintaining a high levelof quality. In order to do this, good communication betweenthe various parties involved in developing a new productand producing the relative prototype is essential. Designers’ideas are compared with the requirements of the productiondepartments, giving rise to industrialisation solutions whichcombine technical efficiency and operative practicality.An example of this is the study of preassembledcomponents, which aims to create functional groups off

the production line, in special preassembly areas, thusreducing processing times and rationalising the productionstages. Moreover, thanks to an immediate visual approach,the drawing up of three-dimensional exploded drawingscontaining all the information necessary for executing adetermined set, enables technicians to understandprocessing more easily. Moreover, these drawings are alsobe of great help to workers with little expert knowledge,supporting them in the learning process. The Research &Development Centre is also involved in the work of studyingnew production lines in order to optimise processing. In-depth analyses of production dynamics makes it possibleto develop detailed work plans which help manage humanresources and the flow of materials, also contributing tocontrolling the course of the production stages. Anotherimportant sector of interest is the development of productionsystems and equipment, for example, studying handling

verificare la resistenza dei materiali, e i “test di fatica”,trattamenti che mettono in evidenza la qualità, l’elasticitàe la robustezza dei materiali, individuandone eventuali difetti.In particolare, per quanto concerne lo studio del gelcoate della vetroresina, vengono effettuate accurate prove construmenti specifici, tra cui glossmetro (che misura lalucentezza del gelcoat), viscosimetro, durometro, bagnotermostatico, e altri ancora. La calcinazione è un test dicontrollo qualità che permette di monitorare il contenutodi fibra di vetro e di resina in percentuale all’interno dellaminato e allo stesso tempo consente di verificare il numeroesatto degli strati di tessuto presenti nel laminato stesso.Un manufatto che presenti corretti rapporti resina/fibra divetro è un manufatto che garantisce elevate prestazioni dalpunto di vista strutturale e dal punto di vista del peso.Un altro test è il QUV panel, che viene effettuato per testare

l’invecchiamento da esposizione prolungata ai raggiultravioletti tramite la comparsa di zone di ingiallimento delgelcoat, cos ì da selezionare i fornitori migliori.

Industrializzazione di prodotti e processiL’industrializzazione di prodotto viene perseguita attraversoun attento studio dei progetti e dei processi produttivi,analizzando le metodologie costruttive adottate, allo scopodi elaborare soluzioni e procedure che rendano più semplicie snelle le lavorazioni, mantenendo un alto livello qualitativo.A questo scopo, si rende indispensabile il dialogo tra levarie parti in causa nello sviluppo di un nuovo prodotto enella realizzazione del relativo prototipo; le idee dei progettistisi confrontano con le esigenze dei reparti produttivi, dandovita a soluzioni di industrializzazione che coniuganol’efficienza tecnica e la praticità operativa.Un esempio al riguardo è costituito dallo studio deipreassemblati, al fine di realizzare gruppi funzionali fuorilinea, in apposite zone di premontaggio, riducendo così itempi di lavorazione e razionalizzando le fasi produttive.Inoltre la realizzazione di disegni esplosi tridimensionali,contenenti tutte le informazioni necessarie all’esecuzionedi un determinato complessivo, consente, grazie ad un

Un altro importantesettore di interesse riguarda lo sviluppo di sistemi edattrezzature rivolte alla produzione; ad esempio lo studiodi sistemi di movimentazione capaci di sveltire e facilitarela manipolazione di oggetti di dimensioni rilevanti all’internodei cantieri. Sempre a questo proposito sono state sviluppatenumerose idee per la gestione ed il trasporto dei modellidel nuovo Reparto Modelli & Stampi; tali modelli infattirichiedono soluzioni appositamente studiate per consentirneuna lavorazione agevole e che comporti il minimo numerodi riposizionamenti in modo tale da rendere ancora piùefficienti le operazioni della macchina a controllo numerico.

A partire dal 1963, il nome ROLLA è sinonimo, a livello

mondiale, della più alta qualità ed efficienza nel campo delle

eliche marine. La produzione attuale comprende eliche

appositamente progettate con dimensioni fino a 2 metri di

diametro.

ROLLA fornisce ai cantieri un supporto completo di

consulenza idrodinamica, utilizzando le tecniche CFD, che

permettono l’analisi delle prestazioni dello scafo, incluso lo

studio dinamico in moto ondoso “SEA KEEPING”. Questi

sofisticati metodi di calcolo sono anche utilizzati per la

progettazione e verifica di eliche immerse e di superficie.

L’integrazione del calcolo elica - scafo mediante CFD permette

di ottenere, al momento, la più efficace soluzione per le

prestazioni richieste dal progetto.

Entrare nell’olimpo dei mega yacht per cullarsi in un sogno.

È l’emozione che attraversa ogni visitatore ed ogni armatore

che fa il suo ingresso in CRN, cantiere del Gruppo Ferretti

leader mondiale nella costruzione di imbarcazioni da diporto

dai 30 ai 70 metri.

CRN, acronimo di “Costruzioni e Riparazioni Navali”, 41

anni di successi, una flotta di 118 mega yachts già varati,

un marchio che è sinonimo di perfezione ineguagliabile e

CUSTOM LINE, una flotta giovane di cui sono state varate

45 imbarcazioni dal 1998 ad oggi, l’alto di gamma in

composito del Gruppo Ferretti. Nel cantiere anconetano

vengono prodotti oggi mega yachts in acciaio ed alluminio

completamente custom da 43 a 70 metri con marchio CRN

e imbarcazioni semi-custom in materiale composito con

marchio Custom Line dai 29 ai 43 metri di tipo planante,

semi-dislocante e dislocante. Veri e propri giganti della

nautica da diporto diversi per stile e carattere ma dominati

da un unico obiettivo: trasmettere emozioni indimenticabili

a bordo di una regina del mare, perfetta combinazione di

potenza e design ai massimi livelli.

Dopo l’acquisizione del confinante cantiere Mario Morini,

specializzato nella produzione di navi mercantili ed oggi

convertito al diporto, il CRN consente la costruzione

simultanea di 15 imbarcazioni tra acciaio e composito (in

Ancona) e si estende per una superficie che raggiunge circa

80.000 mq. di cui 35.000 mq. coperti. A questi numeri va

aggiunto lo stabilimento di Fano dove si producono 3/4

Custom Line 94’ ogni anno.

Entering the Olympus of mega-yachts is like indulging in a

dream. This is how every visitor and shipowner feels on

entering CRN, one of the shipyards belonging to the Ferretti

Group, world leader in the construction of yachts from 30

to 70 metres.

CRN, which stands for “Costruzioni e Riparazioni Navali”

(“Naval Construction and Repairs), can boast 41 years of

success; the launch of a fleet of 118 mega-yachts; a brand

whose perfection cannot be matched; and CUSTOM LINE,

a younger fleet with 45 top of the range Ferretti Group craft

in composite material launched in 1998. Today the Ancona

shipyard builds fully-customised, steel and aluminium mega-

yachts from 43 to 70 metres under the CRN brand, and

semi-custom craft in composite material from 29 to 43

metres under the Custom Line name including planing

boats, semi-displacement and displacement models. Both

are true giants of the sailing world, different in style and

character, but driven by the same aim - to create

unforgettable emotions on board a sea goddess, in a perfect

combination of power and design taken to the highest

levels. After taking over the adjoining Mario Morini shipyard,

which specialised in the production of merchant ships but

now builds pleasure craft, CRN can boast a simultaneous

output of 15 yachts made in steel and composite material

(in Ancona) and a surface area of approximately 80,000 m,

of which 35,000 m are covered. The annual production of

3/4 Custom Line 94’ yachts in Fano must be added to

these figures. With a turnover of 130 million Euros and

almost 400 employees working in Ancona (a figure which

doubles if all the side-line businesses are included), CRN

is a strong contender for the title “new capital of the

international yachting world”.
