This is the motivation with which the 8th Alpini Regiment was granted Honor-ary Citizenship, voted with one accord – following the proposal of the Ex-

combat Veterans and Corps Associations of Cividale – by the Munici-pal Council, on the 29th June 2001.

This is the synthesis of the sentiments of esteem and affection that tie the Town to one of its significant parts of the community, and at the same time a commitment to help develop and support this body, faithful guardian of the alpine traditions and those of the people of Friuli.For the prestige gained and the recognitions earned by the Regi-

ment in its nearly one hundred years of history, the worthy peacekeeping activi-ties carried out both on the national territory and overseas, the great devotion and the spirit of service towards the local community, never disjointed from the ever increasing efficiency of the unit and the functionality of the facilities and equipment: it is for all these features that the Municipal Administration has com-mitted itself to preserve “its” Regiment in Cividale, and has found great sat-isfaction for the enhancement and development the Regiment achieved, also becoming the seat of the Italian Battle Group, with operational competences at international level.

The 8th Alpini, is today one of the most significant bodies of the Town of Cividale. I am confident that it will operate with great professionalism to serve the demo-cratic institutions and the civil society for many years to come.

“Per il forte legame tra la Città e l’ 8° Alpini, nel ricordo del glorioso Battaglione ‘Cividale’, per lo spirito di servizio nei confronti della co-munità e per l’impegno nelle operazioni umanitarie, la Città di Cividale del Friuli dedica con l’auspicio di un futuro di pace e libertà”

E’ questa la motivazione con la quale è stata concessa la Cittadinanza Onoraria della Città all’ 8° Reggimento Alpini, deliberata all’unanimità – su concorde proposta delle Associazioni Combattentistiche e d’Arma di Cividale – dal Consiglio Comunale il 29 giugno 2001.

Una sintesi dei sentimenti di grande stima e simpatia che legano la Città ad una sua componente significativa, ed un impegno per sostenere e valorizzare questa realtà, fedele cu-stode delle tradizioni alpine delle genti friulane.Il grande prestigio e gli alti riconoscimenti attribuiti al Reggi-mento nei suoi quasi cento anni di storia, l’esemplare attività svolta in missioni di pace nel territorio nazionale ed all’estero, il forte attaccamento ed il concreto spirito di servizio dimostrato nei confronti della comunità locale, non disgiunte dalla sempre crescente efficienza dell’unità e dalla funzionalità delle strutture e delle dotazioni disponibili: per queste peculiarità l’Amministrazione Comunale si è lungamente impegnata per il mantenimento del “suo” Reggimento in Cividale, trovando alla fine soddisfazione per la sua permanenza e il suo potenziamento anche come sede dell’Italian Battle Group, con competenze operative in campo internazionale.

L’ 8° Alpini, è oggi una delle realtà più significative della Città di Cividale. Sono certo che continuerà nel tempo ad operare con alta professionalità al servizio delle istituzioni democratiche e della società civile.

To write a mere thought on the 8th Alpini Regiment is definitely no easy task; history has tied the Regiment to the Tolmezzo, the Gemona and the Cividale Batta-

glions with their countless and impressive missions and has been the witness of such grandness and importance in the military life of the Alpine Forces.An Alpine corps which in the past distinguished itself in war mis-sions and that today stands out for is preparation and specialisa-tion in the Humanitarian and Peace missions. Its Alpines distin-guished themselves, and still do, for their great devotion to their “being alpines” which is dense of humanity and human value. The community of Venzone, with its people have shared experi-ence since the sixties when the alpines of the Tolmezzo eighth battalion settled in their barracks. Since then the town and the alpine community have been together in history which has been marked by important events. I will only mention two examples to which I personally am attached. After thirty years it is impos-sible not to remember, the earthquake that in 1976 struck Friuli destroying Venzone and the tragic period that followed. I still

clearly recall that at nine o’clock in the evening the temblor oc-curred and that by eleven the alpines of the nearby barracks, where luckily no ca-sualties or injuries were suffered, had already set up a tent city for the evacuated people of Venzone. And how not remember the humanitarian mission in Bosnia, the salute of our town when the alpines returned with the marshalling of the ten companies in the main square and the people cheering. The many bad times but as also the many good times to remember have brought us close together: the community of Venzone and our barracks, our alpines.It is with these sentiments as a citizen that today as a Mayor, I warmly greet the young “professional alpines” who have chosen to be part of the great Regiment, and I wish them to be the representatives of the profound values that have always distinguished the alpines.On my own behalf and on behalf of the Municipal Administration and the citizens I have the honour to represent, I warmly salute you and again, Thank you!Mandi

Scrivere un pensiero sull’ottavo Reggimento Alpini, non è certamente una cosa facile, la storia che ha legato a questo Reggimento i Battaglioni: Tolmezzo, Ge-mona, e Cividale, con le loro innumerevoli e grandiose missioni, ne è testimone della Sua grandezza ed importanza nella vita militare delle Forze Alpine.Un corpo degli Alpini che ha saputo distinguersi nelle passate missioni di guerra e che oggi è preparato e specializzato nelle missioni Umanitarie e di Pace. I suoi Alpini si sono distinti, e si distinguono, per il grande senso di appartenenza ad una “fede alpina” intensa di umanità e sentimento al valore umano.La comunità di Venzone, con la sua gente, condivide questa esperienza dagli anni sessanta, da quando gli alpini dell’ot-tavo battaglione Tolmezzo si insediano nella costruita caser-ma. Da allora la nostra città e la comunità alpina sono unite nella storia segnata da grandi eventi. Ne cito due esempi, a cui sono particolarmente affezionato. Come non ricordare a trent’anni il terremoto che nel 1976 colpì il Friuli e distrusse Venzone e quel tragico periodo che ne seguì: ricordo sempre che alle nove di sera ci fu l’evento sismico e che alle undici gli alpini della nostra caserma, che fortunatamente non ebbe vittime ne feriti, si erano subito mobilitati e avevano già costruito una tendopoli per la gente venzonese sfollata. E come non ricordare la missione umanitaria in Bosnia, il saluto della nostra città al rientro degli alpini con lo schieramento delle dieci compagnie fatto nella piazza con la gente ad accoglierli.Con tanti momenti tristi ma altrettanti felici e di bei ricordi siamo reciprocamen-te legati: la comunità venzonese e la nostra caserma; i nostri alpini.E’ con questi sentimenti da cittadino, che oggi, da Sindaco saluto i giovani “al-pini professionisti” che hanno scelto di militare in questo grande Reggimento, augurando loro di essere rappresentanti di quei valori profondi che da sempre contraddistinguono l’essere alpino.A nome mio personale, dell’amministrazione comunale, della gente che mi pre-gio di rappresentare, un affettuoso saluto ed ancora un sentito Grazie!Mandi.

o avuto il privilegio di assumere il comando del glorioso 8° Reggimento Alpini, unità che ha scritto pagine indimenti-cabili della storia delle Truppe Alpine, proprio nel momen-to in cui esso ha raccolto anche l’eredità del disciolto 14° Reggimento, prestigiosa unità della Brigata “Julia” che, pur in un breve lasso di tempo, si è distinta in Italia e nel

mondo per la sua capacità operativa e la straordinaria professio-nalità dei suoi uomini.

Il “nuovo” Ottavo è oggi una realtà saldamente legata alla tra-dizione Alpina e forte dell’esperienza unica accumulata dai suoi Ufficiali, Sottufficiali e Volontari nelle operazioni di supporto alla pace e di risposta alle crisi in teatri operativi complessi quali la Bosnia, il Kosovo, l’Afghanistan e il Pakistan, oltre a quelle con-dotte sul territorio nazionale per garantire la sicurezza nella lotta contro il terrorismo internazionale.

was given the privilege to assume the command of the glorious 8th Alpini Regiment, a unit which has written many of the memorable pages of the Alpine Troops his-tory. This, right when it was collecting the hierarchy of the disbanded 14th Regiment, prestigious unit of the “Julia” Brigade, which even though for a short length of time

stood out in Italy for its extraordinary operational capacity and professionalism of its men.

The “new” Eighth has now become tightly bound to the Alpine tradition and is strengthened by the experience gained – by its Officers, Noncommissioned Officers and Volunteers – in the peacekeeping operations in complex operational theatres over-seas, such as those in Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan and in Paki-stan and on the national territory to guarantee security and fight against international terrorism.

L’Ottavo è atteso ora da nuove sfide importanti e ambiziose, che lo porteranno a far parte del Progetto Europeo di Di-fesa, essendo stato designato quale unità operativa del costituendo “European Union Battle Group”.

Gli Alpini dell’Ottavo sono orgogliosi di esse-re parte integrante delle stupende Città di Cividale e Venzone, meravigliosi patrimoni d’arte e di cultura nel Friuli, in Italia e nel mondo. Sono grati alle loro genti, uniche per generosità e attaccamento al “loro” Reggi-mento.

The Eighth is now facing new important and ambitious chal-lenges, which will have it participate in the European Defence

Project, being designated as the operational unit of the “Eu-ropean Union Battle Group”.

The Alpini of the Eighth are proud to be part of the beau-tiful towns of Cividale del Friuli and Venzone, which are marvellous artistic and cultural heritage in Friuli, in Italy and in the rest of the world. I am grateful to the their people, who are unique for generosity and

devotion to “their” Regiment.

ividale del Friuli is situated in the eastern side of the region, 23 Km east of Udine nestled on the banks of the Natisone river. Its historical importance is reflected in the ur-ban fabric, in the buildings and in

the churches. Today the town is open to new perspectives of European cultural ex-change thanks to its Mittlefest, a festival populated by artists from abroad, mainly from Central Europe.

According to the tradition, Cividale was founded by Julius Caesar in 50 BC, on

the Venetian and Celtic settlements. It was occupied in 568 by the Lombards led by Alboin and became the capital of their first duchy. It then passed under the Francs, who changed the an-cient name Forum Julii to Civitas Austræ from which Cividale is derived. Starting from 1077 it became the seat of the Patriarch-ate of Aquileia under whose jurisdiction it remained until 1914, when it passed under the Republic of Venice. In 1813 it the was subjected to Austrian rule and only in 1866 it became part of the Kingdom of Italy.

pei grazie al Mittelfest, un festival animato da artisti provenienti soprattutto dall’Euro-pa centrale.

Secondo la tradizione, Cividale venne fon-data da Giulio Cesare nel 50 a.C., sul luogo di un antico insediamento venetico e celtico. Occupata nel 568 dai Longobardi di Alboino, divenne la capitale del loro primo du-cato. Passò poi ai Franchi che ne cambiarono l’antico nome Fo-rum Julii in Civitas Austræ, da cui Cividale. A partire dal 1077 divenne sede del patriarcato di Aquileia cui rimase sottoposta fino al 1419, anno in cui passo alla Repubblica di Venezia. Nel 1813 entrò a far parte del dominio austriaco e solo nel 1866 si unì al Regno d’Italia.

Ponte del Diavolo, meritano particolare menzione il Tempietto Longobardo, risalente al 770 o 810 d.C. uno dei più complessi e misteriosi monumenti altomedievali, e l’Ipogeo Celtico, un sug-gestivo ambiente sotterraneo, dalle pareti di roccia, anch’esso d’origine misteriosa.

Da ricordare le principali manifestazioni che si svolgono a Civida-le del Friuli ogni anno: il 6 gennaio la Messa dello Spadone e Ri-evocazione storica “Ritorna il Patriarca”, nel periodo di Pasqua il Gioco del “Truc”, nel mese di luglio il Mittelfest, in agosto il Palio di San Donato, ogni quarta domenica del mese il Baule del Dia-volo, a settembre lo Shopping Day, in settembre-ottobre la Corsa Automobilistica di salita Cividale-Castelmonte, in novembre la Festa di San Martino e nel periodo natalizio Iniziative di Natale.

ividale del Friuli is a lively town, rich in history, culture and traditions, but it is also very modern and very well connected to the other towns of the region, to the moun-tains, to the coast, to Austria and to the close neighbour-ing Slovenia. It offers travellers and guests outstanding

The main events held every year in Cividale del Friuli are: on the 6th January the Messa dello Spadone e Rievocazione storica “Ritorna il Patriarca” (Mass of the Sword, it is called so because the celebrant wields a sword that belonged to the Patriarch in commemoration of the “Return of the Patriarch”), for Easter the Il gioco del “Truc” (traditional Easter game), in July the Mittlefest, in August the Palio di San Donato, and every fourth Sunday of the month the Baule del Diavolo (flee market), in September the Shopping Day, in September-October the Cividale Castelmonte Hillclimb Rally. he favourable geographical position of Venzone has made it a staging post since the Celtic times (500 BC).

After the Celts, came the Romans who made Venzone their statio along

the Via Julia Augusta which from Aquileia led to the markets of north-east Europe.

Venzone experienced several invasions by the Gaudi, the Marcomanni, the Visigoths, the Ostrogoths, the Byzantines, the Lom-bards, and the Caloringes.

In 1077 Venzone became part of the Patri-archate of Aquileia, in 1420 it was annexed

to the Republic of Venice and in 1866 it became part of the King-dom of Italy.

In 1965 it was designated “national monument” for its enormous historical and artistic value. Destroyed by the 1976 earthquake, Venzone has been beautifully rebuilt and has become an interna-tional case study.In 1991 the European Community declared Venzone an “ideal vil-lage”.

Nei secoli seguenti si sono avute le di-verse invasioni di Gaudi, Marcomanni, Visigoti, Ostrogoti, Bizantini, Longobardi e Carolingi.

Nel 1077 Venzone entra a far parte del Patriarcato di Aquileia, nel 1420 della Repubblica di Venezia e nel 1866 del Regno d’Italia.

Nel 1965 viene dichiarata “monumento nazionale” di grande interesse storico ed artistico. Distrutta dal sisma del 1976, oggi Venzone è rinata grazie ad un intervento di ricostruzione che ha reso la cittadina un esempio internazionale.Nel 1991 la Comunità Europea dichiara Venzone “villaggio ide-ale”.

hen you arrive at Venzone you are at once impressed by the only example of middle age walled village still existing in the region. Entering the Porta di Sotto, a semicircular arch dating back to 1835 which replaced a previous fourteenth century doorway, you immedi-ately find the first noteworthy buildings: Casa Mar-

curele, the most ancient being dated from the 9th century, and Palazzo Zinutti, 18th century noble corner-house, which boasts an elegant access balcony with a a wrought steel rail visible from the yard. Finally you reach the main monument of the village, the

Duomo di S. Andrea, symbol of the resur-gence of Venzone after its destruction due to the 1976 earthquake.

As you continue towards the square there is the Casa Calderari, 14th century, which has a welcoming internal courtyard and finally you reach the Municipal Building.There are several events organised throughout the year. Perhaps, the most relevant and that which draws the larg-est number of visitors is the Pumpkin Fest which is held during the fourth week-end of October.

Besides, in summer there are annual con-temporary art exhibitions and theatrical

representations as well as concerts by the village Band and Ma-jorettes and on the 15th August the Antica Sagra di S. Lucia fest, choir concerts organised by the “Li Muris” choir in December, the traditional fairs to celebrate Saint James and Saint Ann in July and Saint Bartholomew in August, a mountain-bike race in May and a mountain speed bike race in October, a duathlon competi-tion in August within the traditional Sagra di Pioverno fest.

hi arriva a Venzone si trova subito dinanzi l’unico esempio di cittadella murata medioevale conservatasi nella Regio-ne. Entrando dalla Porta di Sotto, arco a tutto sesto risa-lente al 1835, costruita al posto di una precedente porta trecentesca , si susseguono già i primi edifici di interesse: Casa Marcurele, la più antica essendo un edificio del IX

secolo, e Palazzo Zinutti, settecentesco palazzo nobiliare d’ango-lo, dall’elegante ballatoio con parapetto in ferro battuto visibile nel cortile. Si arriva poi al monumento principale del paese, il Duomo di S. Andrea, simbolo della rinascita di Venzone dopo la distruzione del terremoto del 1976. Prose-guendo oltre verso la piazza si trova Casa Calderari, sec. XIV, dall’accogliente cortile interno, e si giunge al Palazzo comunale.

Diverse sono le manifestazioni che vengo-no organizzate nell’arco dell’anno. Forse la più importante e di richiamo è la Festa della Zucca, durante il quarto week-end di ottobre.

Inoltre si svolgono annuali esposizioni d’ar-te contemporanea in estate e spettacoli teatrali, il concerto ed esibizione del Com-plesso Bandistico e del Gruppo delle Majo-rettes a Ferragosto, l’Antica Sagra di S. Lu-cia e la Rassegna corale curata dal coro “Li Muris” a dicembre, le tradizionali sagre dei SS. Giacomo e Anna a luglio a quella di S. Bartolomeo in agosto, la gara di mountain bike in maggio e di corsa in montagna in ottobre, di duathlon in agosto nell’ambito della tradizionale sagra di Pioverno.

he 8th Alpini Regiment was con-stituted on 1st October 1909 from the “Gemona” , “Tolmezzo “ and “Cividale” Battalions. It under-went its paptism of fire in the Italo - Turkish campaign in 1911.

During the First World War the Regiment was initially deployed in Carnia , from Passo Monte Croce Carnico to the Gruppo del Montasio.Following the retreat due to the breach of the Caporetto front the Regiment Battal-

ions were moved to the Col Caprile, Busa Alta, Monte Grappa , Monte Solarolo and Passo Tonale area.During the interval between the two world conflicts about 500 men made up of Officers, NCOs and Alpini soldiers were drawn from the 8th Regiment to form the “Pusteria” Division in the Italo - Ethiopian campaign(1935 - 36).From the 28 of October 1940, during the Second World War , the Regiment as part of the Divisione Alpina Julia, took part ,

Ottavo Reggimento Alpini fu costitui-to il 1° ottobre 1909 con i battaglioni “Gemona”, “Tolmezzo” e “Cividale”. Ebbe il battesimo del fuoco nella cam-pagna italo-turca del 1911. Durante la Prima Guerra Mondiale il Reggimento

venne schierato inizialmente in Carnia, dal Passo Monte Croce Carnico al gruppo del Montasio.In seguito al ripiegamento causato dal cedi-mento del fronte di Caporetto, i battaglioni del reggimento vennero spostati nella zona del Col Caprile, Busa Alta, Monte Grappa, Monte Solarolo e Pas-so Tonale.Nell’intervallo tra i due conflitti circa 500 uomini tra Ufficiali, Sot-tufficiali ed Alpini dell’8° Reggimento concorsero a dar vita alla Divisione “Pusteria” nella campagna italo – etiopica (1935-1936).Nella Seconda Guerra Mondiale, inquadrato nella Divisione al-pina “Julia”, il Reggimento dapprima partecipò, a partire dal 28 ottobre 1940, alla campagna sul fronte greco - albanese. right from the beginning , in the campaign of the Greek - Albanian front.On 28th March 1942, on their return from the Greek campaign, a

part of the Regiment Command and almost the entire “Gemona” Battalion lost their lives in the sinking of the “Galilea” ship.Following its return to Italy in April 1942 , the Regiment was sent to Russia with the “Julia” Division.The Regiment was disbanded following the events of the 8th September 1943 and was later reformed on May 1st 1946 , in Tolmezzo and, successively , forming part of the “Julia” Brigade, from October 1949, the Regiment continued to be the faithful cus-todian of the Alpini traditions of the Friulano people up to 1975 when it was again disbanded due to the reorganisation of the Army.

odern developments have brought about the rebirth, on the August 1992 , of the Regiment based upon the “Ge-mona” Battalion.During the nineties the Regiment took part in several missions in the “Vespri Siciliani” territorial security op-erations.

In 1994 the Regiment was deployed in Mozambique , as part of the UN “Albatros” Operation.Furthermore it has taken part in exercises in neibouring Europen countries and has recently been enployed in numerous opera-tions abroad.Infact, personnel from the 8th has been trained to take part in peacekeeping and support operations to contain and mediate in conflicts between nations of the former Jugoslavian States (Bosnia - Kosovo) , returning from the “Joint Forge” Operation in Sarajevo in March 2002.For an almost continuous period between 2002 and 2004 , the Regiment has been involved in operations in support and anti-terrorism activities, assuming responsibility for entire sections

At present the Regiment provides personnel for international opertions and for various stages of peacekeeping process in Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan (at Herat, in the operation “Prae-sidium” as regards to Provincial Reconstruction Team) , and also for operatios in support of anti - terrorism measures on national territory.

Being made up almost entirely of volunteer soldiers and having been the first unit of the Alpine Troops to incorporate , train and employ Annual -Term Volunteers, the Regiment was also the first to train one year Fixed -Term Volunteers.At the moment it includes all the volunteer figures of the Italian Army (Permanent Service Volunteers, Short-Term Service Volun-teers and Fixed Short-Term Service Volunteers).Heir and Custodian of the traditions of the “Gemona” ,”Cividale” , “Val Tagliamento” , “Val Fella” , “Monte Canin”and “Monte Matajur” Battalions that were once part of it but which are no longer in existence, the Regiment commemorates the 1915 war-time events on the “Pal Piccolo” ,”Pal Grande” and Freikofel on the occasion of its Corps Day on 24 May. The Regiment Commander is Col. Massimo Panizzi , 51st, in order of succession.

Al momento fornisce personale nelle operazioni internazionali e nelle fasi di stabilizzazione del processo di pace in Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan (a Herat, nell’operazione “Praesidium” nel quadro del Provincial Reconstruction Team) e nelle operazioni a supporto delle attività di antiterrorismo sul territorio nazionale.Il Reggimento costituito, nella sua quasi totalità, da militari vo-lontari, dopo essere stato il primo reparto delle Truppe Alpine ad incorporare, addestrare ed impiegare i Volontari in Ferma Annua-le, è stato il primo ad addestrare i Volontari a Ferma Prefissata di un anno.

Attualmente ingloba tutte le figure di volontari dell’Esercito Ita-liano (Volontari in Servizio Permanente, Volontari in Ferma Breve e Volontari in Ferma Prefissata).Erede e Custode delle tradizioni dei Battaglioni che ha avuto alle dipendenze e che ora non sono più in vita, “GEMONA”, “CIVI-DALE” “VAL TAGLIAMENTO”, “VAL FELLA”, “VAL NATISONE”, “MONTE CANIN” e “MONTE MATAJUR”, festeggia la propria festa di Corpo il 24 maggio a memoria degli eventi bellici del 1915 sul Pal Piccolo, Pal Grande e Freikofel.Il Comandante di Reggimento è il Col. he 8th Alpini Regiment, based between Cividale and Ven-zone, is considered one of the units with high operational capacity Italy offered to create the rapid-reaction inter-vention forces of the European Union. This is an ambi-tious political project undertaken by the European gover-nors in the summer of 2003 and is now at an advanced

level of realization.

In accordance with these agreements, the Italian Government has provided the European Union with three Battle Groups, all fo-cused on a “manoeuvre unit” given by the infantry regiment. The Battle Groups formed by the amphibious regiment “Serenissima” and the “SAN MARCO” regiment of the Italian Navy are also flanked by the 8th Alpini Regiment. These groups are multina-tional as they also include a Slovene and Hungarian companies.

8° Reggimento Alpini, stanziato tra Cividale e Venzone, è una delle unità di elevata capacità operativa offerte dall’Italia per la costituzione delle forze di intervento ra-pido dell’Unione Europea. L’ambizioso progetto politico espresso dai governanti europei nell’estate del 2003, è oggi una realtà in avanzato stadio di realizzazione.

Sulla base di queste decisioni, il Governo Italiano ha messo a disposizione dell’Unione Europea tre Battle Groups, incentrati ciascuno su un’ “unità di manovra” data da un reggimento di fan-teria. Ai Battle Groups costituiti attorno al Reggimento Laguna-ri “Serenissima” e al Reggimento “SAN MARCO” della Marina Militare Italiana, si affianca quello dell’8° Reggimento Alpini. Free time can be enjoyed in the fully equipped gym, on the soccer field, on the basketball court, in the rock climbing gym or in the comfortable cinema hall.

As far as functionality is concerned the “Francescatto” barracks has a mechanical garage, an infirmary, a barber’s, warehouses, an ATM machine, and all the most up-to-date and sophisticated equipment to guarantee stable and operational living. Finally, the video-surveillance systems and multimedia connections enable permanent surveillance and fast exchange of information.

The barracks was first started being built in the late seventies, after the previous existing one had been destroyed by the 1976 earthquake, and was finished and inaugurated in 1987. It was designed and built not to resemble the old existing

barracks but, instead, to appear like a small, welcoming “cita-del” furnished with all comforts and functional in all its sectors.

La Caserma Feruglio

f we were asked to indicate a singular feature of the “Ferruglio” Barracks, we would definitely choose the accommodation units as a symbol: four bedrooms with private bathrooms. Noticeable is the wide range of sports facilities available: an up-to-date sports centre, a fully equipped gym, tennis, basketball and volleyball courts and rock climbing gyms. There is also a large and comfort-

able cinema hall, a fully furnished and equipped Leisure Centre with a pizzeria, fast food and a well organised canteen.

Thanks to its organisational efficiency this barracks has become a model to be copied in the rest of Italy.

L’Addestramento

he 8th Alpini Regiment is a unit which has been actively deployed in several international operations and has also often been involved in national and multinational drills. Personnel education and training is conducted, both fol-lowing the training curriculum of the Army General Staff and the programs that focus on specific disciplines.

This is carried out by highly qualified and specialised instructors – who have gained a wealth of operational experience – in suitable and exception-ally organised training areas designed for this specific purpose. The area where the Regiment conducts “on field” activities is denominated “Carnia training area” and is organised as follows:

For normal training activitiesthe firing range at Rivoli Bianchi in Ven-zone and that in Tolmezzo are exploited and firing exercises can be performed up to platoon level.

For live fire training including mortars and artillery and for “tactical group” drillsapart from the national firing ranges the

unit also conducts training on the Mount Bivera area, on the bor-der between Carnia and Cadore.

Per le normali attività addestrativevengono utilizzati poligoni di tiro a Rivoli Bianchi di Venzone e a Tolmezzo dove si possono effettuare attività a fuoco fino a livello di plotone.

Per le scuole tiro mortai e per le grosse esercitazioni di “complesso minore”oltre ai poligoni di tiro nazionali il reparto utilizza l’area del Monte

For combat activities in particular environ-ments and for peace keeping operation training specifically prepared areas in Artegna and Osoppo are exploited.

For the training in specific disciplines (skiing, mountain climbing, and mountain activities) there is the logistics/training base in Tar-visio, both in winter and in summer.

The Regiment bases of Cividale and Venzone, are provided with the most up-to-date learning equipment and classrooms for language courses, information technology training and driving school, as well as a coordination room provided with the most advanced technological equipment, a Briefing Room with video-conference facilities, internet stations for each operational cell, telephone and internet connections with the High Commands and all that is necessary to conduct and control the national activities.

Finally, it has to be pointed out that the permanent personnel periodically attends requalification education and training pro-grammes.

Bivera, sul confine carnico-cadorino.

Per le attività di combattimento in ambienti particolari e per la preparazione alle opera-zioni di mantenimento della pace vengono impiegate aree predisposte presso Artegna ed Osoppo.

Per l’addestramento di specialità (sci, alpinismo e attività in montagna) c’è la base logistico/addestrativa di Tarvisio, sia nel periodo invernale che in quello estivo.

Il Reggimento, nelle sedi di Cividale e Venzone, dispone inoltre di moderne e attrezzate aule didattiche per lo svolgimento di corsi di lingua straniera, di informatica, di scuola guida; nonchè di una sala operativa tecnologicamente avanzata, dotata di una Briefing Room con videoconferenza, postazioni Internet per ogni cellula operativa, collegamenti informatici e telefonici con i Comandi Superiori e tutto ciò che è necessario alla condotta e al controllo di attività nell’ambito nazionale.

Infine va sottolineato l’invio periodico del personale in servizio permanente a corsi di aggiornamento e qualificazione.

From November 2005 to January 2006 the Regiment cooperated in the “Indus” opera-tion in Pakistan to aid the population of the quake-affected areas.

For the “2006 Olympic and Paralympic Games of Turin” the Regiment provided a company of skiers to support the organizing committee .

At present it provides personnel for the international peace and stability operations in Bosnia, Kosovo and Afghanistan, and in Herat, in the reconstruction operation denominated “Provincial Reconstruction Team”.

Lo SportSports

very year the Regiment is involved in numerous sport competitions. One among many, the Italian Alpine Troop Ski Championship (CaSTA), organised by the Alpine Troops Command of Bolzano which has as main purpose that of testing the level of training achieved by the units in the winter activities and which has reached number 58

competitions.The 8th Alpini Regiment is always very well represented and distinguished.

Here are the results obtained since 1997:- 1997 - 1st place;- 1998 - 2nd place;- 1999 - 4th place;- 2000 - 2nd place;- 2001 - 3rd place;- 2002 - 4th place;- 2003 - 1st place;- 2004 - 1st place;- 2005 - 2nd place;- 2006 - 2nd place.

A special mention for the gold medal holders of the “Cambrian March Patrol” international competition the British Army organ-ises every year, during which the military personnel of the best units from European and non-European countries confront on dif-ficult patrol exercises.Several military champions of biathlon, nordic skiing, special slalom and mountain bike races distinguish themselves in the Regiment.

Il Volontariato in Ferma Prefissata a 1 anno (VFP1)

Il Volontario in Ferma Prefissata ad un anno può essere impiegato in operazioni entro e fuori dal territorio nazionale sulla base del livello di preparazione raggiunto.

Riceve una retribuzione mensile di circa 800€, con la promozione a Caporale ed una maggiorazione di 50 € mensili se sceglie di prestare servizio nei reparti alpini.

Gli aspiranti volontari residenti nelle zone dell’arco alpino e nel-le altre regioni tipiche di reclutamento alpino sono destinati, a domanda, ai reparti alpini, fino al completamento dell’organico.

Inoltre il VFP1 è il destinatario del progetto “euroformazione”, che si conclude con l’acquisizione di una abilitazione riconosciuta in ambito Unione Europea per l’utilizzo del computer e per la lingua inglese.

4-year commitment as a Short-term Military Volunteer (VFP4)

A 4-year Short-term Military Volunteer is exclusively a profes-sional who comes from a 1-year short term service experience. The volunteer is to be less than 30 years old, must have displayed exceptional military qualities, impeccable behaviour and moral principles.

4-year Short-term Military Volunteers can, during their period of service, achieve the rank of Corporal and their career will natu-rally lead to Permanent Volunteer Service. 4-year Short-term Military Volunteers can run for the places re-served for the military personnel of the Academy of Modena to become Officers or for the extraordinary selections for admission to the Police Forces.

Al termine della ferma il VFP1 può con-correre all’immissione nella ferma qua-driennale VFP4 delle Forze Armate o nelle carriere iniziali delle Forze di Polizia.

Il Volontariato in Ferma Prefissata a 4 anni (VFP4)

Il Volontario in Ferma Prefissata a quattro anni è un militare pro-fessionista proveniente esclusivamente dai VFP1. Il candidato deve avere meno di 30 anni e deve aver dimostrato di possedere ottime qualità militari oltre che moralità e condotta impeccabili.

Il VFP4 potrà conseguire, durante il periodo di ferma, il grado di Caporalmaggiore e la sua carriera avrà sbocco naturale nel Volontariato in Servizio Permanente.Inoltre può concorrere ai bandi interni riservati ai militari all’Ac-cademia di Modena per diventare Ufficiale ed ai concorsi straor-dinari per l’immissione nelle Forze di Polizia.
