Telefónica to launch ‘5G experience’ in banks in Spain Una delle prime esperienze in ambito bancario

Telefónica has signed a deal with Spain’s Banco Santander to leverage 5G in two banking offices in the city of Alcobendas, Spain. Telefónica already deployed a trial 5G standalone network in Alcobendas. ZTE provided the radio, core network and the terminals for the trial. Touting that wireless technology will bring “new services to the financial sector,” the two companies said they have developed three use cases for customers in the offices using 5G. “The initiative with Santander Spain is the result of the collaboration with our corporate customers to ensure that 5G technology is deployed in a way that fully meets their needs, prioritizing the development of the most demanded capacities,” said Emilio Gayo, CEO of Telefónica Spain, in a statement. The network will support 4K video conferencing between the two bank offices in Alcobendas, supporting 4096 x 2160 resolution and 30 frames per second. The network will also support a low latency cloud storage solution that’s based on the Hitachi Content Platform Anywhere Edge solution embedded on Telefónica's edge computing infrastructure. The final use case involves virtual reality. The service enables customers to “remotely visit” co-working spaces such as the Santander Work Cafe located at the Santander banking office in the center of Madrid, using virtual reality, 360-degree video and edge computing. The project is the first 5G deployment in the banking sector in Europe. Banking applications could emerge as an early use case for 5G networks. Despite the hype around

Uber Partners With AT&T for 4G & 5G Connectivity for Air Taxis & Cargo Drones Light Reading

AT&T and Uber are working on LTE -- and eventually 5G -- connectivity for vertical take-off and landing taxis (eVTOLs) and cargo drones. The multi-stage deal was announced at Uber's yearly Elevate Summit in Washington, DC, on Tuesday. AT&T is already working with Uber to test drone delivery in San Diego. Its networks will also be used to support the launch of Uber Copter, a high-end helicopter service that's launching in New York City in July. "We’re in the very earliest stages of seeing what 5G can do to augment next-generation air travel, but we're excited for the possibilities," said Andre Fuetsch, president and chief technology officer of AT&T Labs, in a statement. "Ridesharing services were one of the defining mobile applications of the 4G era. Air taxis and other new air vehicles could well eventually become a signature use case for 5G." Uber describes the air transport project as "building the future of aerial ridesharing." In 2023, Uber plans to give riders the option of an affordable shared flight, the company says in a statement.

The first phase of the deal will last a year or more. AT&T and Uber will initially assess and allow 4G and 5G connectivity for piloted aircraft and autonomous cargo drones operating in low-altitude airspace. Future phases may include more advanced projects such as edge computing and network slicing. These technologies would help further enable dedicated and reliable connectivity for air taxis and drones. Uber plans to demonstrate its vertical take-off taxis in 2020. It plans to launch the service in Dallas, Los Angeles, and Melbourne, Australia in 2023.

Vodafone and PTC combine to simplify IoT and AR for industry and developers

Vodafone has signed a deal with industrial IoT and AR specialist PTC to help developers and enterprises deploy digital-change applications. The deal is an extension of an existing three-year arrangement, they said. Milwaukee-based PTC quoted market analysis from LNS Research that says less than 10 per cent of industrial companies, as it stands, rate their digital transformation efforts as successful. The deal with Vodafone Business is geared towards PTC’s indistrial strengths in internet-of-things (IoT) and augmented reality (AR) solutions. Stefano Gastaut, IoT director at Vodafone Business, commented: “The opportunities for IoT and AR solutions in all industry sectors are enormous and we want businesses of all sizes across the globe to be able to leverage the power of IoT to drive better outcomes for themselves and their customers.”

DT userà solo energie rinnovabili entro il 2021 Come si sa, l'industria TLC è una industria energivora

Deutsche Telekom aims to use only electricity from renewable sources by 2021 and, by 2030, to reduce its CO2 emissions by 90 percent compared with 2017. Also by 2030, Deutsche Telekom wants to lower the emissions from the production and utilization phases of its products and customer solutions by 25 percent. “As one of the biggest DAX-listed companies, we take climate protection very seriously. We want to build the future for the generations to come, not rob them of it. Climate

protection is an integral part of any future-proof business model,” says Tim Höttges, CEO of Deutsche Telekom AG, explaining the company’s climate protection targets. Deutsche Telekom is the third DAX-listed company officially recognized by SBTi as contributing toward the target of limiting global warming to 2° C. Only just over 200 companies worldwide have climate protection targets that have been certified as science-based and will thus contribute toward implementing the Paris Agreement of 2016. Deutsche Telekom is the third DAX-listed company alongside SAP and HeidelbergCement to have received a positive evaluation. Tags: energy

5G: in uk: velocità attorno a 360 Mbps

The first, most important point to make is that coverage is hyper-localized. Take Covent Garden as an example. EE directed me to Floral Street, which runs by the entrance to the famous tourist spot, and while 5G did arrive on my phone, it disappeared when I took 20 steps in the “wrong” direction. Even then, speeds weren’t as impressive as I’d hoped.

The Fast speed test app showed consistent data download speeds of 360Mbps and above. What about when it did fly? Near St Paul’s Cathedral, the Fast speed test app showed consistent data download speeds of 360Mbps and above. Walking down The Strand also returned results of at least 200Mbps and higher. During all my tests I’ve used a standard OnePlus 7 Pro with an EE 4G LTE SIM card inside for direct comparison. Notably at this spot, 4G LTE was very slow, rarely going above 20Mbps, mostly due to the amount of people using their phones, and the time of the day. Speed tests are one thing, but they don’t really demonstrate the real-world benefits of 5G. I carried out an effective test of 5G’s speed and low latency while sitting down for coffee on The Strand. Playing a 4K YouTube Video at 1440p on both the 5G and the 4G phones, scrubbing to the halfway

Page 7: 5G, FutureNet e Tecnologie - Telecom Italia · 5G, FutureNet e Tecnologie • Telefónica to launch ‘5G experience’ in banks in Spain • Uber Partners With AT&T for 4G & 5G Connectivity

point from the beginning saw the 5G phone start playing again almost instantly with no image degradation, while the 4G LTE connected phone took much longer to resume playing. Elsewhere on my expedition, I downloaded a 45-minute, 1080p Netflix episode in around 25 seconds over 5G, while the same episode took more than 1 minute 40 seconds over 4G LTE. Using the 5G OnePlus 7 Pro generally, when the connection was strong in either 4G or 5G, is a fluid experience most of the time. Google Maps loads quickly and viewing Street View images is smoother and more usable than over an average 4G connection. Even viewing webpages in Chrome, and navigating around links is fast. This may have been a placebo effect, but it felt instantaneous when 5G was active. These are simple tasks, yet not having any wait time removed frustration and increased usefulness. Tags: 5G

Germany, France and Spain inked on Monday (17 June) a framework agreement for the joint construction of Europe’s largest arms project to date, the so-called Future Air Combat System (FCAS). In the presence of French President Emmanuel Macron, on the sidelines of the world’s largest air show, defence ministers of the three countries signed the agreement launching a trilateral framework of cooperation to design a next-generation fighter jet. The decision to cooperate followed tough negotiations with the French government and within Germany’s struggling ‘Grand Coalition’. In July 2017, Chancellor Angela Merkel and Macron agreed on the development of the fighter system and a new battle tank. Dassault Aviation and Airbus are set to build the fighter jet, while France’s Safran and Germany’s MTU Aero Engines will jointly develop the new warplane’s engine. The French and German governments expect to invest an initial €4 billion in the combat jet by 2025, with France, the project leader, contributing €2.5 billion, according to the French defence ministry. Unlike the Eurofighter, the new FCAS will also include a range of associated weapons, such as swarms of unmanned aerial carriers (drones) interconnected by a cloud, surveillance and command aircraft, cruise missiles, satellites and ground stations. Paris and Berlin want the first flight of the prototype to take place in around 2026. The new fighter jet is expected to take to the skies from 2040, with a view to replacing the French Rafale and Germany’s Eurofighter. Tags: cloud, drones

UK’s first 5G industrial trial suggests new technology could increase UK productivity by 2%

Initial results of Worcestershire 5G Consortium’s testbed were exclusively revealed at Connected Britain 5G could increase UK productivity by two per cent – the equivalent of overall growth over the last ten years, new results from the UK’s first 5G industrial trial have revealed. Run by Worcestershire 5G Consortium and bringing together operators, local authorities and equipment manufacturers, the Worcestershire 5G Testbed launched in February 2019. Marking the first step in Britain’s quest to reap the benefits of Industry 4.0, the project deployed a 5G network for Worcester Bosch and Yamazaki Mazak to use to conduct trials to demonstrate how the technology can improve factory output and productivity. Speaking today at Connected Britain, Worcestershire 5G Consortium Chair Mark Stansfeld declared the testbed a success, revealing there has been a proven two per cent increase in productivity in some applications. This is double the one per cent gain that was hypothesised when the project began and equivalent to UK productivity growth over the last decade. “So far, a two per cent increase in productivity [has been] proven and each of the different applications have shown improvement in productivity,” said Stansfeld. “We now want to scale it up and commercialise that. That is just within a factory and the real opportunity is looking at the whole area of the supply chain.” According to Stansfeld, the two per cent increase is the equivalent of a £3.76 billion contribution. His presentation – titled ‘5G: The Driver for UK Productivity’ – also outlined some of the lessons learnt from the trial so far. These included challenges around spectrum allocation, which he said still needs to be resolved, and a clear gap in the overall skills agenda, with the language of manufacturers being “very different” to the language that telcos are familiar with. Stansfeld also highlighted 5G as being “very much a nascent market,” disclosing that the testbed had experienced difficulties when trying to get some of the required hardware, including modems and chipsets.

Page 14: 5G, FutureNet e Tecnologie - Telecom Italia · 5G, FutureNet e Tecnologie • Telefónica to launch ‘5G experience’ in banks in Spain • Uber Partners With AT&T for 4G & 5G Connectivity

The next step, said Stansfeld, is to move from a testbed scenario to a true commercial business and grow the ecosystem from the factory floor to other areas of the supply chain. “You have to believe that 5G is part of the overall jigsaw; it’s not the solution to everything but it is a part,” he added. “To be successful, it has to be very different as a technology – it cannot just be 4G+1.” Stansfeld concluded his presentation by calling on the UK to take advantage of the opportunity it has to be seen as a driver of 5G. To do this he said, the key was to trial [5G] locally, scale it regionally, deploy it national and publicise it internationally. Tags: 5G, industry 4.0

SK Telecom to work with Ericsson, Nokia and Samsung on 5G/6G R&D

SK Telecom has signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with each company, and will work closely with the technology partners in developing and commercializing 5G technologies such as ultra-reliable and low-latency communications (URLLC), enhanced multi-input multi-output (MIMO), differentiated 28 GHz technology, and standalone (SA) 5G networks, the operator said in a release.

Page 15: 5G, FutureNet e Tecnologie - Telecom Italia · 5G, FutureNet e Tecnologie • Telefónica to launch ‘5G experience’ in banks in Spain • Uber Partners With AT&T for 4G & 5G Connectivity

Under the deal, SK Telecom will also work with the network vendors on the next generation of cellular networks - 6G. The operator said it will develop and draft technical requirements and new business models for 6G. SK Telecom’s CTO and head of its ICT R&D center, Park Jin-hyo, said the operator will “lead the way towards 6G mobile network communication” through its collaboration with the equipment vendors. While it’s still early days for 5G, researchers at NYU Wireless, Nokia Bell Labs and Virginia Tech have already begun work on the next cellular standard; and the first 6G summit was held earlier this year in Finland. Virginia Tech associate professor Walid Saad, who recently co-authored a report on 6G, said its not too early to begin research on 6G. Tags: 6G

Huawei: a breve sistema per smartphone alternativo ad Android, si vedrà Si vedrà se avrà successo come Apple iOS

China’s Huawei is in the process of potentially launching its “Hongmeng” operating system (OS) to replace the U.S. Android OS, an executive said on Thursday, after Reuters reported that the company has applied to trademark the OS in various countries. Data from a U.N. body showed that Huawei Technologies Co Ltd is aiming to trademark the OS in at least nine countries and Europe, in a sign it may be deploying a back-up plan in key markets as U.S. sanctions threaten its business model. President Donald Trump’s administration last month put Huawei on a blacklist that barred it from doing business with U.S. tech companies such as Alphabet Inc, whose Android OS is used in Huawei’s phones. Andrew Williamson, vice president of Huawei’s public affairs and communications, said Hongmeng was moving forward. “Huawei is in the process of potentially launching a replacement,” Williamson said in an interview in Mexico City. “Presumably we’ll be trying to put trademarks.” A senior U.S. official on Thursday said Huawei’s clients should be asking themselves if the Chinese firm can meet its commitments given its dependence on U.S. companies. First announced at Google I/O 2015, Project Soli is a Google ATAP endeavor based on radar hardware, most notably for device control via subtle hand movements. Whether you’re using a watch, phone, or tablet, this miniature radar sensor can, among many other things, differentiate between very fine motions to perform various platform-specific functions. Now, we’re told that 2019 might be the year that Soli finally shows up in Google’s hardware products… Specifically, we’ve heard that the Soli radar chip is integrated in the Google Pixel 4. We don’t have any idea what this would mean for the product; Google could easily use the chip for anything from gesture-based control while driving to new Assistant interaction methods. Previous demos of Project Soli might offer insight into how Google might use the tech in the Pixel 4. One video released in 2015 showed Soli imagined for use with a tablet to control a color palette in a drawing app. It’s plausible that Google could use the chip in the Pixel 4 for UI control somehow resembling this. Or perhaps the radar technology could be utilized in ways that even Google hasn’t publicly imagined.

More recently — and practically — Google actually showed off Project Soli working on both a smartwatch and a smart speaker at Google I/O 2016. That demo showed the chip embedded in a Wear OS smartwatch for interface control, and the smart speaker integration made it possible to simply wave at the speaker to tell it to stop playing. Notably, the FCC granted Google a waiver “to operate at higher power levels than currently allowed” on December 31st 2018, effectively approving Soli’s use in future consumer products. The FCC at the time noted that Soli poses “minimal potential of causing harmful interference” and said it was in the “public interest” to grant the waiver.

We further find that grant of the waiver will serve the public interest by providing for innovative device control features using touchless hand gesture technology.

Other Google Pixel 4 details are slowly trickling in, with just yesterday marking the first appearance of likely-credible renders based on CAD specifications. Then, this morning, YouTuber Unbox Therapy shared a video showcasing some “case models”, in which he also talked about some rumored details about the forthcoming Google flagship. Perhaps other 2019 Made by Google products will feature the Project Soli chip. Google is rumored to be launching a new generation of the Google Home this year, as well as a smartwatch, and gesture-based control via Soli might be a great hallmark feature to differentiate those products. What do you think? How might Google use Project Soli in the Google Pixel 4? Tags: Smartphone, UX Source: https://9to5google.com/2019/06/11/google-pixel-4-project-soli/

Ikea is introducing robotic furniture for people who live in small spaces

Coming to Hong Kong and Japan in 2020 Ikea is launching a new robotic furniture system called Rognan, developed in collaboration with American furniture startup Ori Living. The large storage unit, controlled by a touchpad, can slide across a room to divide a small room into two living spaces, and contains a bed, desk, and a couch for people to pull out when needed. It’s designed for people living in urban areas to maximize their small spaces, and will launch first in Hong Kong and Japan in 2020. Rognan is built on Ori’s robotic platform, and works with Ikea’s Platsa line of storage furniture. It’s also compatible with Ikea’s Tradfri line of cabinet and wardrobe smart lighting. Ikea says the Rognan can save an extra eight square meters (about 86 square feet) of living space. That might not sound like much, but if you live in a tiny home, it could make all the difference.
