Con le mani With our hands

Osservo le mie mani. Le appoggio su questo tavolino, alla luce bianca del neon, in camerino. Mancano

pochi minuti all’inizio del concerto. Apparentemente sembrano mani qualunque, ma osservandole molto

da vicino si percepiscono dei piccoli particolari che tradiscono anni di lavoro maniacale e ripetitivo.

La pelle tra le nocche è più incavata e i tendini sul dorso affi orano visibilmente, tanto da dare la

sensazione che le dita siano più lunghe. Le unghie sono molto corte e il polpastrello ne copre quasi

il taglio: questa è una delle caratteristiche più evidenti. Le dita, infatti, sono appiattite all’estremità, in

una forma tutt’altro che affusolata, a causa delle centinaia di migliaia di pressioni a cui le ho sottoposte

durante tutti questi anni contro l’avorio dei tasti.

Ecco le mani di un pianista: la pelle è liscia, levigata e delicata, simile a quella di un bambino, o, si

direbbe erroneamente, a quella di un annoiato aristocratico benestante che non ha mai avuto bisogno

di lavorare. Ma non facciamoci ingannare dalle apparenze! Ci sono volute ore e ore, curvo sulla tastiera

a imparare, approfondire, perfezionare la tecnica, per arrivare a fare, con naturalezza, qualcosa che

sembra impossibile. Non esistevano amici, giochi, svaghi, ma solo una passione travolgente e la

necessità di conquistare un “saper fare” che i greci chiamavano “Tèchne”. Con una maniacalità ai limiti

della compulsività, mettevo a punto la mia tèchne: una sequenza perfetta ma sempre perfezionabile di

migliaia di micro-movimenti di cui occorre essere pienamente coscienti in ogni momento, come fosse

la coreografi a di un balletto in miniatura dalle regole ferree.

E poi ci siamo... L’applauso del pubblico avvolge la mia ansia, mista ad adrenalina. Mi siedo, respiro,

e lentamente appoggio le dita sui tasti. È come se si creasse un fi lo energetico ideale, un cavo, che

collega le dita al cuore e al cervello. Le mani cominciano a muoversi, seguendo soprattutto la memoria

tattile, e molto meno quella visiva. All’inizio sembra quasi di non riconoscere i tasti, ci vuole un po’

perché le dita trovino la giusta pressione e i muscoli della mano e degli avambracci si scaldino.

Intanto il pianoforte libera nell’aria melodie ad arco, disegnate secondo un solco già percorso centinaia

di volte, ma che bisogna continuare a controllare con una coscienza vigile, per non rischiare di fi darsi

del già conosciuto, di lasciar fare a una sequenza meccanizzata che non abbia il controllo della mente.

Lascio me stesso continuare il concerto, ma io che sono qui a scrivere posso concedermi lo spazio per

una rifl essione: non è incredibile? Stiamo vivendo un’era ipertecnologica e informatica, dove i fi les, gli

mp3, le mail e gli hardware riempiono la nostra esistenza quotidiana. Eppure a ogni concerto centinaia

di persone riempiono un teatro per vedere e ascoltare qualcuno che, solo con le mani fatte di pelle,

nervi, muscoli e ossa, preme, in una sequenza complessa prestabilita, dei tasti di un pianoforte, che a

sua volta è fatto di legno, feltro, ghisa, rame, velluto.

Allora mi viene da dire: che bello questo mondo, che ancora considera di grande valore ciò che è

umano, che concede un applauso a un’abilità manuale, tanto faticosamente perfezionata.

Giovanni Allevi

Giovanni Allevi nasce ad Ascoli Piceno il 9 aprile 1969. Laureato cum laude in fi losofi a, si è diplomato

con il massimo dei voti in pianoforte e in composizione. Concertista e compositore, Allevi rielabora la

tradizione classica europea aprendola a tendenze pop, rock e jazz. I suoi tour e i suoi album riscuotono

ovunque un enorme successo di pubblico e critica, così come il suo impegno intellettuale e la sua

attività di compositore hanno ricevuto in tutto il mondo prestigiosi riconoscimenti.

Carattere distintivo dell’uomo, le mani sono essenza del fare e del comunicare. Sono strumento delle

nostre opere, indispensabile per lavorare e costruire, coltivare e produrre. Segno della nostra nobiltà,

con le mani entriamo in contatto con il mondo e con gli altri: offrono e ricevono, sono all’origine del

linguaggio e dell’espressione. Le mani costituiscono allora il mezzo attraverso il quale l’intelligenza dà

forma non solo ai suoi pensieri artistici, ma anche alle creazioni della volontà e dell’ingegno.

Quale tema migliore di questo per ABB, da sempre impegnata a supportare i propri clienti nel dare

forma e concretezza a soluzioni che li aiutino a vincere le loro sfi de di ogni giorno, in maniera sostenibile.

Le mani: pura energia e origine della produttività.

I look at my hands. I place them on this table under the white neon light of the dressing room. Only a

few minutes to go before the concert. They seem like ordinary hands, but on closer examination, little

details begin to appear that give away years of maniacal and repetitive work.

The skin between the knuckles is more hollowed out and the tendons on the back of the hands show

through, making the fi ngers look longer. The nails are very short and the fi ngertips almost cover the

edges – one of the most noticeable characteristics. In fact, the ends of the fi ngers are fl attened out,

not at all tapered, due to the hundreds of thousands of times they’ve pressed against the ivory keys

over the years.

These are the hands of a pianist: the skin is smooth, delicately buffed, and similar to that of a baby.

Or, one might wrongly say, like that of a bored well-to-do aristocrat who has never had to work.

But let’s not be deceived by appearances. It took hours and hours of hunching over the keys of a piano

to learn, improve, and perfect the technique needed to do naturally what would seem impossible.

There were no friends, games, or distractions, just an overwhelming passion and the need to conquer

the “craft” that the Greeks called tèchne. With a maniacal intensity bordering on compulsiveness, I

perfected my tèchne: a perfect sequence – though one which can always be improved – made up of

thousands of tiny movements requiring total concentration, just like the choreography of a ballet in

miniature with ironclad rules.

And now we’re here … the applause of the audience envelops my anxiety mixed with adrenaline.

I sit down, breathe, and slowly place my fi ngers on the keys. It’s as though an ideal fl ow of energy

is created that connects the fi ngers to the heart and brain. My hands begin to move mainly through

muscle memory and, to a lesser degree, visual memory. At fi rst, it seems as though I don’t recognize

the keys, and it takes a while before the fi ngers fi nd the right pressure and the hand and forearm

muscles warm up.

Meanwhile, the piano releases an arc of melody into the air, following a pattern drawn hundreds of

time, but that constantly needs to be controlled with vigilant awareness, so that it does not sound

predictable and does not turn into a mechanical sequence not controlled by the mind.

I let myself continue with the concert, but since I’m here writing, I can allow myself time for refl ection.

Isn’t it incredible? We’re living in a super technological and computerized age, where fi les, MP3s, emails

and hardware fi ll our daily lives. And yet at every concert, hundreds of people fi ll the theatre to see and

hear someone with hands made of skin, nerves, muscles and bones, pressing the keys of a piano in a

complex pre-established sequence – a piano, which is itself made of wood, felt, iron, copper and velvet.

All I can say is what a beautiful world this is, which still places great value on something human, and

applauds a manual dexterity that has been so painstakingly perfected.

Giovanni Allevi

Giovanni Allevi was born in Ascoli Piceno on April 9, 1969. He graduated university cum laude with

a degree in philosophy and received a diploma with honors in piano and composition. Both concert

pianist and composer, Allevi re-elaborates the classical European tradition, opening it up to pop, rock

and jazz infl uences. His tours and albums have been an enormous success with public and critics

alike, and his intellectual commitment and work as a composer have received prestigious recognition

worldwide.

As man’s distinctive feature, hands are the essence of doing and communicating. They are tools

used to create our works, indispensible for working, building, planting and producing. They are a

sign of our nobility. Hands allow us to come into contact with the world and with others. They offer

and receive, they are the source of language and expression. Hands are the means through which

intelligence gives form not only to its artistic thoughts, but also to creations of the will and mind.

What better theme for ABB, which has always been committed to supporting its clients by creating

solutions that help them overcome everyday challenges in a sustainable manner. Hands – pure energy

and the source of productivity.
