Patrizia told of turquoise waters and the gardensto the east of the city center, in Albaro with itsfancy villas. I described the ugliness of a bad anddirty Genoa of narrow medieval alleyways. Thatis the area that I see the most. I live on ViaCaffaro, which is like a diving board for jumpinginto the Old City. Our historic old city center isunique. Nowhere else in the world can you findan old building with a little Arab kebab seller onthe first floor, a professor on the second, anarchitect on the third. But my real favorite is ViaPre. I walk into some shops and find anotherworld. For the book, I photographed a view of astreet that could have been New Orleans in theforties. I show it through the portrait of a blackgirl who is dressed like those who in the moviesgo on to become famous jazz singers. It’s aphotograph that speaks for itself. It has aninclination that is so gospel, so African, socolored. BBuutt iinn bbllaacckk aanndd wwhhiittee......This is why I leave so much to imagination, readyto be evoked, to make you dream. Of coursethere are also some splendid photographs incolor. Just think of those famous images from1968. But only black and white adds somethingto the image: it pulls out the geometry, the form, the heat. Just think of all the portraits of famouspeople out of history, music, literature; all of ushave grown up in black and white. HHooww ddoo yyoouu ttaakkee aa ppoorrttrraaiitt?? I really like my shots of Cristiano De Andrè,which were taken in a negative period of his lifefrom which he has now recovered. It almost bothers me to seemyself act. It’s not snobbism, but I really don’tenjoy seeing myself in shows and sit-coms. Ihope I am capable of doing more with my timethan just watching junk on the screen. We adultshave this bad habit of needing to be alwaysentertained. It’s sad.
