The key words to describe the production scene in Varese are diversifi cation and entrepreneurship. With over 64 thousand companies operating throughout the territory, involved in a vast range of production and service industries and employing nearly 268 thousand workers, the Varese area off ers a wide range of products and services. Here, in fact, a large number of prestigious international companies intermingle with a dense network of small and medium businesses and workshops: the Varese system is characterized by an average of 54 companies per square kilometre (compared to the regional average of 35 and the national average of 18), 36% of which are small businesses (with respect to the regional percentage of 32% and the nationwide percentage of 28%). This dense production network has resulted in close supply and subcontracting relationships, whereby the larger companies are able to rely on the professionalism, expertise and fl exibility of the smaller businesses, thus rendering the area unique, boasting a favourable atmosphere for the establishment of new enterprises. A territory which, being suspended between modernity and tradition, has succeeded in keeping historical sectors alive (including textiles, engineering, aerospace and home appliances), while at the same time diff erentiating its products by taking advantage of new opportunities (in terms of fashion, new textiles and plastic materials and home automation, as well as medical, biotech and eco-friendly technologies).
The following is a collection of the “case histories” for the companies operating in the production sector that appeared in the 2010 - 2012 editions of “Lombardia NordOvest”, a publication issued by the Varese Chamber of Commerce, each of which was dedicated to a particular aspect of the Varese production system. This article is not intended to represent a comprehensive collection of the various exceptional manufacturing companies found throughout the province of Varese.

CASE HISTORIES SPECIAL SUMMARYCASE HISTORIES SPECIAL SUMMARY

E continua a farlo.
A refrigerator, a washing machine or a stove can be designed while you’re on vacation: all it takes
is a good vantage point from which to watch the people go by. Just watch what they do, and
take note of their movements as they visit a monument or hop on the tram. The young creative
technicians at Whirlpool do this often: they depart on a work holiday in the European capitals
in order to get to know the people, their tastes and their subconscious behaviour, all of which
represent an endless source of information for those who develop home appliances designed for
everyday use. This is just one of the activities carried out by the experts at Global Consumer Design,
the fl agship of innovation for this multinational manufacturer of home appliances, the direct heir
of Ignis, which was established in the town of Comerio by Giovanni Borghi. The giant that has
brought refrigerators and stoves to every home throughout Europe. And continues to do so.
CALZATURIFICIO STAR ARTIOLICALZATURIFICIO STAR ARTIOLIvia Oslavia, 3 - Tradate
John, Salvador Dalì, Frank Sinatra, Gary Cooper, Fred Astaire. Persino Papa Wojtyla, che
prendeva tre colori, bianco, nero e il preferito bordeaux.
A century-long journey through the realm of design. Visiting Artioli calzature in Tradate is a
unique experience. Not just for the prestige of an artisanal company that’s provided shoes
to all the world’s most powerful individuals. But also for the enthusiasm of a family that,
despite its achievements, has not lost sight of its origins and maintains its desire to face new
challenges. A brand which, according to insiders, has adorned the feet of Putin, Berlusconi,
Sarkozy, Bush, Donald Trump, Sean Penn, George Clooney, Robert De Niro and Michael Jackson
(who wore two diff erent sizes for use during and after his concerts), not to mention Elton John,
Salvador Dali, Frank Sinatra, Gary Cooper and Fred Astaire. Even Pope John Paul II, who wore
three diff erent colours: white, black and, his personal favourite, burgundy.

applicazioni semplici, senza forare e rovinare piastrelle, marmi e mosaici.
From the fi rst toothbrushes with celluloid handles to an entire range of bathroom furnishings,
Koh-I-Noor set out to conquer the worldwide market from the town of Tradate by combining
plastic and metal materials, for a perfect blend of aesthetics and functionality. Established
as the exclusive importer for the namesake factory in Czechoslovakia, in 1995 the company
began manufacturing bathroom accessories characterized by the use of diff erent materials,
based on both aesthetic and functional requirements. The aim has always been to combine
simplicity of use and ease of assembly with an attractive modern design: Koh-i-noor was the
fi rst to develop a line of wall-mounted accessories with a glue-based mounting system in order
to ensure simple application, with no need to drill and/or ruin tiles, marble or mosaics.

Ieri come oggi.
Glasses are an extremely important accessory: they have to be seen, no matter what. They
sit right on your face, and essentially call attention to themselves. That’s why research is of
fundamental importance to this industry, and the Varese area is proud to boast a lengthy
and successful tradition of eyewear production. Both past and present. Those at the company
Mirage, in Venegono Inferiore, are well aware of this. In fact, the company has been actively
involved in the eyewear industry since 1965, initially providing services exclusively for third
parties, and for the past 25 years producing its own product lines. The Venegono facility
employs specialized designers, whose professionalism is aimed at maintaining the company’s
roots, while keeping constantly up to date with the market’s new developments.
With a research and development centre in Cassano Magnano and a production facility in
Gallarate, where the wiring, assembly and warehouse departments are located, Norlight
designs and manufactures lighting fi xtures that not only off er exceptional technical
performance, but also represent ideal furnishing elements for a wide range of environments:
including offi ces, shops, industrial buildings, artists’ workshops and hospitals, as well as sterile
environments for companies involved in the food, pharmaceutical and technical/electronics
sectors. The company’s products can be found at most of the major domestic and international
design events (such as that which is held at the headquarters of Emirates Airlines in Dubai), as
well as a wide range of other shows and venues, including the set for the Italian version of the
talent show “X Factor”.
It is possible to come up with innovative designs, without compromising on tradition. And
perhaps it is even possible to be extremely modern and classical at the same time. Above all
when you manufacture pipes: accessories which, for many of us, bring to mind the black and
white photographs of our grandparents. And yet, even at the dawn of the third millennium,
a number of small companies still remain, which have withstood the test of time and have
managed to create a niche for themselves… in the briarwood. Brebbia Pipe, which has been
producing Italian-made pipes since 1947, is a fi ne example of one of these companies. The
company boasts a range of unique models: elongated designs with taut lines and sharp edges,
all made by hand according to a centuries-old tradition, and with a hint of more modern designs
to come, with signifi cant yet subtle variations in terms of the frame and the mouthpiece.

ROSSI DI ALBIZZATEROSSI DI ALBIZZATEvia Mazzini, 1 - Albizzate
www.rossidialbizzate.itDici design e pensi subito all’arredamento.
The word design often brings home furnishings to mind, and Rossi di Albizzate, established
in 1935, is one of the Italian furniture industry’s leading manufacturers of seating elements.
The company's adventure began in the postwar era, when the Rossi family decided to take on
the challenge of developing sofas that could quickly be transformed into beds. The company
soon also began collaborating with important designers. From there, the design possibilities
took fl ight: the company’s production facility in Albizzate soon begin producing sofas and
armchairs with original designs and soft and sinuous contours which, to this day, still represent
an unmistakable factory brand name. These made-in-Varese seating elements can now be
found throughout the world: in private homes, in spas and wellness centres, on cruise ships, at
international airports, in some of Europe's most elegant hotels, in some of the most charming
villas in Tuscany, and even in some of Russia's higher-end cinema chains.
PRINCIPE PELLETTERIAPRINCIPE PELLETTERIAvia Duca d'Abruzzi, 166 - Varese
pelletteria diversi accessori moda.
From handcrafted design to the use of computer graphics, and with the expert craftsmanship
guaranteed by the company’s professional designers, Principe has represented a reference point
in the design of leather goods for nearly 50 years. In this industry, style, contours and shapes
are decisive factors in determining the product's success. After obtaining its fi rst worldwide
license agreement with Fila Sport during the 1980s, Principe went on to establish commercial
partnerships with a number of prestigious names in the fashion industry during the 1990s.
Today, the company has succeeded in consolidating itself on a worldwide level, and has gone
on to establish the international chain of multi-brand stores known as “Less is more”, which
specializes in leather goods and even off ers a wide range of additional fashion accessories.
BTICINOBTICINOvia Borri, 231 - Varese
www.bticino.itAcceso, spento. Punto.
dell’impianto elettrico. Attualmente le linee innovative rigorosamente made in Italy
Electrical switches were always meant to be functional devices that turn on and off , with
no particular need for aesthetic appeal. But this concept was overturned by BTicino which,
following the second world war, arrived on the scene and provided the industry with a range
of revolutionary new products. Since then, the company has undergone various developments:
thanks to its technological and design innovations, the Varese-based company continued
to expand. The Magic series of 1961, in fact, represented a milestone for the company,
revolutionizing the traditional image of the light switch with its rectangular design and
metallic surfaces. The Living series represented yet another turning point, whereby the concept
of the light switch was replaced by that of the electrical distribution and management system.
The company’s innovative all-Italian designs currently “adorn” homes and apartments in over
seventy countries worldwide.

Many company’s invest heavily in design. Others, however, have it in their blood: they mould
new shapes, conceive of new ideas and make use of new materials. The company Saporiti, in
Besnate, falls squarely within this category. Having been founded halfway though the last
century as a company dedicated entirely to the production of innovative furnishings, Saporiti
went on to grow alongside the industry’s technological discoveries, to the point that it has now
even begun to overtake them. The company boasts some of the most prestigious names on the
international design scene, including that of famous designer Massimiliano Fuksas, who in 2000
developed his fi rst design project: a table designed exclusively for the Besnate-based studio.
Comec Italia remains at the top of the leader board. Give them any surface, and they'll be able
to “write” any symbol, letter or marking upon it. And its all thanks to pad printing, the most
fl exible type of printing currently available, which allows for printing to be carried out upon
fl at, concave and convex surfaces. One striking example is that of the golf ball, the surface
of which is dotted with many small holes, which Comec is capable of perfectly printing upon
as if it were to be using the most elegant fountain pen. This technology has obviously been
developed for a wide range of applications, wherever the need for custom printing may arise.
This vocation dates back to the year 1970, when the Baggini brothers became the fi rst in Italy to
come up with the idea of producing pad printing machinery on an industrial level.

MV MV AGUSTAAGUSTAvia G. Macchi, 144 - Varese
OMNIA PLASTICAOMNIA PLASTICAvia Certosa, 7 - Busto Arsizio
In “pista”,
anti-abrasione all’esterno e anti-appannamento all’interno, grazie a uno strato di 3,4
millimetri, per le visiere della Formula 1. Un prodotto apprezzato anche da campioni del
calibro di Schumacher, Trulli e Fisichella.
Italy’s province of Varese is also known as the province of motorcycles, speed and protective
helmets, an indispensable safety accessory that is making enormous headway. And the
company Omnia Plastica of Busto Arsizio, established in 1950, is one of the industry’s main
players. In fact, the company produces some of the world’s most well-known helmets and
visors. The visor for the Bell helmet, one of the most famous brands on an international level,
was developed here. The same holds true for the special external anti-abrasion and internal
anti-fog treatments used for Formula 1 visors, which make use of a special 3.4 mm layer: a
product which was highly appreciated by the likes of Schumacher, Trulli and Fisichella.
The F4 Gold Series was fi rst presented at the Monza circuit in April of 1999: this motorcycle left
everyone speechless due to its speed (over 280 miles per hour) and its innovative chassis. And
this is enough to summarize the racing spirit of the world’s most fascinating road motorcycles:
the MvAgusta models. Manufactured on the shores of lake Varese, these motorcycles represent
the technological future of the sport, while at the same time keeping a keen eye trained on the
traditions of the past. In order to get an idea of the prestige associated with these two-wheeled
racing machines, all it takes is a peek inside the garages of some of the sport’s wealthiest
enthusiasts: including the King of Spain, Juan Carlos, as well as Tom Cruise and Angelina Jolie.
For over two centuries, the 4th of July has evoked the concept of independence, rebirth and
challenge. At Jaked, which was established on this date in 2008, they are well aware of this
concept, which is expressed in the company’s offi cial texts as “a disengagement from any
form of uniformity and a tangible departure from the concept of standardization”. Today,
this Gallarate-based company has become a leading manufacturer of high-tech swimwear
and the technical sponsor of the Italian Swimming Federation. The performance aspect of
the technology is a decisive factor in the company’s decision to strategically serve the needs
of athletes. The company is currently on the cutting-edge thanks to the technologies that it
applies to its fabrics.

campetti in costruzione in Lombardia.
i tennisti.
The most ingenious solutions are developed by combining technique with passion. In this
case, we're talking about Pierluigi Chierichetti’s extreme passion for horses and horse racing.
In fact, it was this passion that led the company Trafl ex to dedicate itself entirely to sports
activities. Thus, in 1967, the fi rst fl exible and secure plastic fencing made its appearance on the
Varese racetrack, replacing the wooden fencing that had come to be seen as a veritable trap
for jockeys and horses alike. Today, the company's products are used at some of the world's
most important racetracks, and its product range has even expanded to include articles for
the construction industry.
Play tennis, and feel like you're at Wimbledon. Dribble the ball on the football pitch with your
friends, and imagine the rustling of the grass at San Siro Stadium. Playdom has scored big
in the fi eld of artifi cial turf. In fact, this Gallarate-based company’s name can be found on a
large number of the sports fi elds and football pitches currently undergoing construction in the
Lombardy region. One of the company’s most recent innovations is a special rubber-coated
sand in polyurethane, ideal for both footballers and tennis players alike. Thus, two entirely
diff erent shots, like a bicycle kick and a volley, will have the same possibility of success, even if
you’re not Ibrahimovic or Federer.

Cina agli Stati Uniti.
FLORICOLTURA GERVASINIFLORICOLTURA GERVASINIvia Aurelio Saffi , 126 - Varese
In principio furono
Working for the team that you love is a privilege that not everyone gets to enjoy. And it's an even
greater privilege if that team happens to be Inter Milan. Pasquale Gervasini, who represents
the fourth generation in a plant nursery dynasty that has regularly obtained import contracts,
has been enjoying this privilege for 30 years. The fi rst of these contracts included Milanello and
San Siro Stadium: now, however, these expert gardeners from Varese have also taken on the
Pinetina in Appiano Gentile, or rather the training facility in the province of Como used by the
Inter Milan football club: Rain or shine, the Floricultura Gervasini team is ready to take to the
fi eld 365 days a year in order to make sure that the turf is always green, soft, irrigated, or even
electrically heated, for this beloved team’s practices.
When you're wearing a crown, the pursuit of victory is a must. At Husqvarna, this “burden”
is seen as a challenge: the brand is strictly linked to sports activities: an enduring bond that
has led the organization to obtain 78 world titles since 1959. It’s a characteristic that’s deeply
ingrained within everyone at the organization’s headquarters in Cassinetta Biandronno, on
the shores of Lake Varese, where the “Crowned H” was established in 1987: Husqvarna does
not only compete in races, but also competes for its share of the market, testing its motorcycles
directly “on the road”.
They gleam on the circuits, rain or shine. While they may go unnoticed, they’re represent the
fundamentals of safety for those who live life in high gear and need to... keep their heads
on straight. And many are produced in the province of Varese. With the Cat Helmets brand,
which has been around for nearly thirty years now, the Guido Zocchi company of Morazzone
manufactures helmets and special components for motorcyclists all over the world, from China
to the United States. The company produces nearly 500 helmets and millions of components
per month, many of which are used by the world’s leading manufacturers, even to be mounted
upon the helmets of various Formula 1 champions.

Come

A Challenge overcome: to manufacture skis for nearly seventy years and to sell dog sled runners
to the Scandinavian masters. This production miracle was achieved by Mario Fidanza, the heart
of this Mesenzana-based company. Despite being located far away from the big mountains
and operating within a market that’s been dominated over the years by large multinational
companies, the company has boasted a number of signifi cant achievements. Like when it made
skis for King Hussein of Jordan who, in 1975, commissioned a pair of slalom skis for use in the
desert sand. Once the heyday of skiing had passed, however, the company began to specialize in
the production of dog-sled runners.

impegnativo e pericoloso “frontale”.
From a passion for sports to the factory: from the playing fi eld to the challenge of production.
As a former baseball player, 52-year-old Antonio Virgili currently serves as a trainer and
coach, but above all has dedicated himself to designing baseball bats: while the two-to-three
thousand wooden exemplars produced by the company Woodart in Malnate have already
been adopted on the Italian national circuit by our own national champions, the hope is that
one day they will be used in baseball’s homeland, the United States.
At the last World Ski Championships, the athletes had teammates from Varese. The cushions,
safety nets and, above all, the gate poles were provided entirely by Spm of Brissago
Valtravaglia. It all began with an idea conceived by Giovanni Berutti, the son of the company’s
founder, Giampiero. As a good skier who was tired of medicating bruises suff ered from contact
with the gate poles on a daily basis, Giovanni came up with an athletic/entrepreneurial idea
that would change his life forever: the fl ex pole. A contraption that would render the gate to be
overcome less of a wall, and more of a passage to be attacked vigorously, thus eliminating the
fear of dangerous “frontal” collisions.

In Laveno Mombello, during the nineteenth century, the largest ceramic factories in Europe
were erected. At the time, no one would ever have dreamed that ceramics would have had
such a profound infl uence on an entirely diff erent sector: that of medicine. But that’s how it
turned out. In fact, it appeared that porcelain would soon not only be used to produce artistic
objects and artistic compositions of various types, but would also end up directly in the human
body. This project, which is currently being developed at Nuova Ceramica Industriale, arose
from the observation that the porcelain from the Laveno area boasts a characteristic that has
been highly sought after by those operating in the fi eld of prosthetics: or rather, the so-called
“high abrasion” of the material, which determines its life span.
It takes time and money to produce a pharmaceutical. And when you are working in a new
fi eld like that of biological medicinal products, the whole process becomes even more complex.
These drugs are designed with cultures of cells, using recombinant DNA technology. Thanks to
the intuition of Maria Luisa Nolli, the company’s founder and current CEO, Areta International
has been operating in this fi eld since 2000, out of the Insubria Bioparc in Gerenzano. A
company that, in just ten years time, has succeeded in becoming a reference point in the fi eld
of biotechnologies.

MAZZUCCHELLIMAZZUCCHELLI 1849 1849via S. e P. Mazzucchelli, 7 - Castiglione Olona
(115 giorni) rispetto agli standard fi ssati dall’Unione Europea (180 giorni).
TESSITURA CAIELLITESSITURA CAIELLIvia Lago, 19 - Vergiate
Guardandolo a Claudio Caielli,
Fu
in quel momento che iniziarono a prendere forma i fazzoletti d’argento, fi ore all’occhiello
Blood tests are a problem for many people due to the fear of getting stuck with a needle and
the risk of having a novice nurse that has trouble fi nding the vein. In the future, however, it
will just take a single drop and, while sitting comfortably on the couch, the patient will be
able to fi nd out everything about his/her white and red blood cell count, as well as dozens
of other parameters. The idea of a mini home-based clinic was conceived of by Plasmore, a
company headquartered in Ranco and a spin-off of the Community Research Centre in Ispra,
which specializes in the production of chemical and biological sensors.
Mazzucchelli, a historical company in Castiglione Olona specializing in the production
of cellulose acetate, has recently discovered a new bio-plastic material, which is used to
manufacture eye glasses and has been patented under the name of M49. This new material,
which is derived from wood and cotton fi bres, maintains all the aesthetic characteristics and
chromatic aspects of acetate, but is also 100% recyclable and biodegradable. In fact, tests have
shown that M49 breaks down at a faster rate (115 days) than that which is required by the
current European standards (180 days).
The product was inspired by a silver care toothbrush. It was by observing this toothbrush, in
fact, that Claudio Caielli, owner of Tessitura Caielli in Corgeno di Vergiate, got an idea and
began to wonder whether such features could be exploited in the fi eld of textiles. It was at
that time that the idea for the company’s fl agship silver handkerchiefs began to take shape:
an aesthetically pleasing, washable, elegant and lightweight product, that’s pleasant to the
touch and even boasts anti-bacterial properties. In short, it’s a new method for trying to beat
the common cold.

several large scale retail and catering companies.
Large Art Nouveau style facilities immersed within the greenery of a large park. That’s the
look of the Carlsberg establishment in Induno Olona. It’s a story that began in 1876, when
an entrepreneur from the province of Varese, Angelo Poretti, made the decision to transform
the knowledge he had acquired from the best brewers of Austria, Bohemia and Bavaria into a
company of his own. The history of this brewery is interwoven with that of Carlsberg, a Danish
company that markets dozens of brands in Italy and produces nearly 1 million 500 thousand
hectolitres of beer per year. The two companies fi rst began collaborating during the 1970s,
and Carlsberg took full control of the company in 2002. Today, Induno is one of the Danish
giant’s main production centres, and has been rendered even more important thanks to an
innovative beer that, under the brand name of Splügen, combines diff erent types of hops.
If someone mentions the town of Varese in Beijing, the merit is certainly due to the town’s best
known brand, or rather Rossi d’Angera. In fact, this historical producer of spirits and liqueurs
has recently expanded to a number of emerging markets, particularly those of China and Russia.
An important step that will measure the company’s ability to combine innovation, tradition,
and territory of origin with the process of internationalization. Rossi boasts a solid past, rife
with unique experiences: its foundation dates back to 1847, the year in which entrepreneur
Bernardo Rossi opened his own distillery. In 1931, Vittorio Emanuele III awarded the company
the “Patent of the Royal House of Savoy” for the spirits that it produces, which today more than
ever refl ect the company’s tradition of quality and customer awareness.

gastronomia. All’attività in negozio si affi ancarono i primi “timidi” servizi a domicilio,

IFounded in 2004 with a passion for craftsmanship, Birrifi cio Orso Verde produces over one
hundred thousand litres of beer per year. Thanks to an artisanal production process, the
company’s beers develop intense aromas and full-bodied fl avours, all while maintaining
their nutritional properties unaltered. The production facility on Via Petrarca in Busto Arsizio
produces eight diff erent kinds of beer, as well as a number of “seasonal” brews. One of the
most popular brew is Nubia, the beer of the Sumerians and the Egyptians, which is inspired
by English beers with toasted malt with hints of coff ee and dark chocolate. It all begins with
water, barley malt and select wheat from Bavarian and English malt houses, quality hops,
fresh yeast and, for a few special varieties, even spices, coriander, cardamom, and sweet and
bitter orange peel.
The stories of some companies begin, change and evolve alongside those of the families who
founded them. One example is Le Gourmet, an entrepreneurial business that was established
in 1974 in the town of Besnate by Rino Tondini, who’s dream was to open a classic delicatessen.
The shop’s main activities were initially fl anked by its fi rst “modest” delivery services, until
overwhelming demand transformed the catering service into the company’s core business.
In 1981, the company moved to Sumirago, where Le Gourmet can still be found to this day

SENAPE ORCOSENAPE ORCOvia Bainsizza, 44 - Varese

NORDEN FORMAGGINORDEN FORMAGGIvia Marconi, 1 - Osmate
The company was established in the 1960s as a retailer of parmesan and grana padano cheeses. Over
the past 20 years, however, Norden has become the “dairy of Osmate”. The company is dedicated to the
production of full-fl avoured cheeses of he local tradition. Some examples include formaggina (a soft cow’s
milk cheese), crescenza (a soft, creamy Lombard cheese), primo sale (a special pecorino cheese), local toma
(a cow's milk cheese usually made in Piedmont), ricotta and Cravegett (a raw milk 'toma' cheese). The
company produces everything locally: the milk used to produce the cheese products, whether cow's milk
or goat’s milk, comes exclusively from the province of Varese. And at the same time, the local tradition
is fl anked by the production of so-called “dairy products for foreigners”, such as sour cream and quark.
These products meet a demand that continues to increase alongside the number of immigrants who come
to our province.
The ancient Romans used mustard to preserve fruit, vegetables, must and wine. Orco – a company located
on Via Bainsizza, in Varese – continues this ancient tradition. The fi rst step was taken by the company
Helvetia, which in 1911 began “distilling” a caramelized sugar extract from Holland, which was considered
an excellent addition to colonial coff ee. It was in 1924 that Orco began making mustard using an innovative
and exclusive production process designed to create a soft and creamy mixture. Combined with the
product’s delicate fl avour, these qualities resulted in a winning product that was well-suited to the tastes
of Italians, who preferred mustards that were less spicy than the English varieties.
Coff ee roasting is an important industry for the economy of the Varese area. La Varesina Caff è, the city’ fi rst
historic roasting company. It was founded in 1919 and was later taken over by the Maffi na family, who
wanted to ensure the continuity of the brand and the quality of the product. Another important company
is Felmoka, which was founded in 1960 by Felice Volpe and went on to specialize in the production of coff ee
blends for cafés. There’s also Caff è El Mundo, which has been closely bound to the tradition and passion for
Italian espresso coff ee for over forty-fi ve years: the company was founded in 1967, and over the years has
been transformed from an artisanal family business into a well-structured and modern company. This was
the result of the company’s continuous pursuit for improvement and innovation, as well as the purchase of
important brand names. And then there’s La Brasiliana, a company which has been provisioning coff ees
of increasingly high quality and of diff erent origins for over 80 years. The evolution of the industry has
led to the introduction of new technologies, but that which unites the Varese Roasting Companies is their
common passion for coff ee roasted with traditional care.

It is well-known that Disaronno, the historic brand name owned by Illva Saronno group, is the
most popular Italian liqueur worldwide. In order to fi nd out more about this liqueur’s “artistic”
roots, we have to go back in time to the year 1525, when the artist Bernardino Luini, a student
of Leonardo da Vinci, was commissioned to decorate the Sanctuary of Saronno. He selected a
beautiful local woman to model for his painting as the Madonna. To thank him, she gave him
a precious bottle fi lled with a fragrant, delicate amber liqueur. It is said that this was the same
liqueur as that which is currently exported to more than 160 countries worldwide, serving as a
symbol of Made in Italy quality for over 500 years. With its distinctive square cap and faceted
Murano glass bottle, Disaronno is recognized as an icon of Italian style and sophistication.
all’anno di materia prima.
The Campo dei Fiori creamery in Daverio has been combining innovative food industry
technologies with a passion for authenticity for nearly fi fty years. The butter that it produces
inextricably binds the company to its origins, and therefore to the local tradition as well. The
company has been producing its butter since 1947 and, just like that which is made fresh
on the farm, it’s best enjoyed spread on a piece of warm bread. In fact, it’s made with fresh
cream and is characterized by a delicate aroma and fl avour, a straw-yellow colour, a uniform
texture and a dense consistency. The company’s processed cheese is a symbol of its continuous
development, while its fruit juices represent its latest innovations: they are made from high
quality ingredients, which are subjected to a natural process that maintains the nutritional
characteristics of the fruit itself.
When people talk about Busto Arsizio, they often describe it as the Manchester of Italy or as a
veritable city of textiles. And yet, thanks to the late entrepreneur Francesco Pellin, Busto Arsizio
has also come to be recognized as the Italian homeland of salmon. That’s right. These fi sh that
travel upstream in Alaska and Scandinavia have found a “home” in a factory located just off
Italy’s Motorway of the Lakes. While nature creates them, Fjord smokes them and sends them
off to half the world’s dining tables. Including those of Italy. Today, more than forty years after
its foundation, Fjord processes and prepares more than 4000 tons of raw salmon each year.
In the 1990s, the company’s expansion led to the establishment of Fjord Norway in order to
guarantee maximum control of the supply chain: from the fi sh-eggs of the fi sh themselves, and
ultimately to the consumer's table.

Ravioli as good as your grandmother’s. And there is in fact a grandmother in the history of the
company Lo Scoiattolo (The Squirrel). She was Ebe Serri, originally from Emilia, an expert on
homemade pasta. It was she, together with her husband Umberto Belletti, who founded this
company in Lonate Ceppino in 1983. The company, which is specialized in the production of
fresh plain and fi lled pasta, today counts nearly one hundred employees and has become one
of the main competitors of industry giants like Rana and Buitoni. The secret? Recipes based on
genuine ingredients, like those used traditionally. Lo Scoiattolo is Italy’s third most important
brand in terms of fresh pasta and ravioli production, and has even become a major name on
the European and international markets.
Lindt boasts a history that’s solidly intertwined with that of the province of Varese: a world
renowned brand that’s synonymous with high-quality chocolate. It was in 1947 that the
Bulgheroni family signed a licensing agreement with the famous Swiss company, and the
production facility in Induno Olona was inaugurated in 1984. Since then the company has
undergone profound changes, but the entrepreneurial spirit and the passion for chocolate-
making are still alive and deeply rooted within the Group. The company is a leader on the
market of high-quality chocolates and continues to operate in over one hundred countries
worldwide. It has commercial offi ces on four continents, two production centres in the United
States and six in Europe, including the Italian facility in Induno Olona.
Baguettes, ciabatta, focaccia, soft sandwich rolls and various other types of baked goods: these
are the strengths of Forno della Rotonda, a company founded under the name Sinpa at the end
of the 1980s by Luigi Lazzaroni. The production facility is located in Caronno Pertusella, and
is specialized in the production of pre-baked frozen breads and other frozen specialities. The
company is focused upon various markets, from the restaurant industry to large-scale retail
trade, both in Italy as well as abroad. The entrepreneur’s commitment and, in later years, the
investments in terms of management and expertise enacted by Barilla group made it possible
to lay the foundations for a successful business that today continues under new ownership
and management.

The credit can mainly be attributed to the Masterbacht, a world leading colorant for plastics.
Having been founded in February of 1973 with the mission of providing exceptional services

Fumagalli Srl, founded in 1973, is a company that’s dedicated to the all-round production of
outdoor lamps. Its production facilities are located on Via Ca’ Bassa, in Varese: that’s where
the pieces begin as drawings and come out “fi nished”, ready to be assembled in thousands of
diff erent manners. In 1978, the company expanded its horizons to include the international
markets, particularly that of Japan. But that which worked to render the company competitive
on a worldwide basis was the vision of Giancarlo Fumagalli who, in 1984, invented a new
design technology. That is to say that he gave his streetlights a galvanized steel core coated
in resin, which was highly impact-resistant, impervious to corrosion, and extremely durable
in terms of colour.
A liner is no longer seen as a mere accessory, but rather as an embellishment and a
distinguishing factor for a garment, with a value all of its own. It is this philosophy that has
allowed Foderami Dragoni to make its mark on the fashion industry worldwide: in fact, this
company from Gallarate, which was founded in 1929, currently exports throughout Europe
(with Germany being its largest market), as well as to North America, Russia and Asia. And the
company’s success is not only due to the fabrics that it produces for linings, but also to the wide
range of articles that it manufactures for shirts, casual wear and pants, which the company
has been producing since the 1970s.
